One Of Those Days Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

ENHANCING A LIFE - Share The Voice, a non-profit organization established to enhance the lives of disabled children, is pleased to announce that it delivered its sixth adaptive tricycle to a disabled child on Long Island on Saturday, March 22nd. The Rifton adaptive tricycle, valued at over $1,400, was presented to 6 year-old Naomi Hernandez, who is diagnosed with Pompe Disease, a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness. Naomi currently uses a wheel chair and can immensely benefit from an adaptive tricycle to strengthen her legs and trunk control.

Alfred Graf (Class of 1976) Mr. Alfred Graf currently serves as the representative of the 5th District in the New York State Assembly. Competitors from 13 Nassau and Suffolk high schools gathered at Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead on May 6th to compete for $5,000 in Suffolk County Community College culinary scholarships in the SYSCO Long Island High School Culinary Arts Competition. The student’s displayed their culinary skills in the dishes that were prepared from a mystery basket of ingredients including a bone-in chicken, sweet potatoes, green squash and sundried tomatoes. Competitors were given one-and-a-half hours to complete two identical plates. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently presented local students with scholarship prizes for their environmental science projects at the Town’s Annual Earth Day Celebration. Joining Supervisor Schaffer in presenting the scholarships were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. Ten scholarship prizes were presented to thirteen students from schools within the Town of Babylon as part of the

annual Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. This scholarship program is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta, which operates the energy-fromwaste facility in West Babylon. It is designed to encourage students who are doing science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation. This year’s contest featured over fifty projects by students from seventh to twelfth grade from

school districts across the Town. The top three prizes this year were all claimed from students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Two years ago, the school received a sizeable donation from local nursing home owner Theresea Santmann for a dedicated science lab, which has led to projects from the school being showcased as part of exhibits at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Rockefeller University in New York City. Deputy Superintendent Peter Daly, Principal Al Cirone and teacher Claire Birone were in attendance for the scholarship presentation, where they were honored for their schools great accomplishments.

Eat Local Long Island is opening an expanded Farmers’ Market in Farmingdale Village on the Green starting Sunday June 1st. “The Farmers’ Market was previously located adjacent to A Taste of Long Island for the past two seasons and we are thrilled to expand the market and offer residents and the community a great new spot to meet, shop local and enjoy great, fresh offerings, as well as a casual shopping experience at the Village Green,” said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. When A Taste of Long Island opened in July 2012, it added a unique shopping experience to Farmingdale Village and Long Island. “A Taste of Long Island is a unique and exciting culinary venture, a gourmet, specialty food market, artisan bakery and private use commercial kitchen,

under one roof,” said Jim Thompson, owner. Jim and his daughter, Courtney Citko, offer a welcoming, great destination store and experience. Jim & Courtney also operate the Farmers’ Market: Eat Local Long Island. “We look forward to a great Farmers’ Market on the Green, located next to the Fire House and Village Hall. Going into its third year, the market will be bigger and better with about 20 vendors on Sundays, starting June 1st, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine through Thanksgiving weekend (unless thunderstorms). Moving the market to Sundays on the Village Green makes this more of a community, social happening, we hope everyone comes to check out all the great locally grown and made produce, food and more,” added Jim

Thompson. Local food artisans and vendors, with locally grown and produced, seasonal farm fresh produce, agriculture products and more will be at the market on Sundays. Some of the vendor products expected at the Eat Local Long Island Farmers’ Market on the Farmingdale Village Green include Schneider’s Farm (Melville), artisan breads, soups, barbecue sauce and rubs, gourmet pickles, fruit spreads, fresh eggs, honey, baked goods, sauces, stuffed peppers, East End Wines, Local Craft Beer and many more vendors being added every week. A Taste of Long Island is obtaining a Farm Brewery License and will be classified as a farm brewer, required to purchase hop and malt supplies from NY State suppliers. There are numerous hops growers

on Long Island and in upstate NY, three grain malters and more coming. “In conjunction with NY State’s desire to cross promote craft brewing and agriculture and markets departments (derived from new legislation from Governor Cuomo’s office last July), we anticipate that by about June 1st, A Taste of Long Island will produce Craft Beer from our facility and sell it daily, and sell it at the Farmers’ Market,” said Jim Thompson. “Back at the time of prohibition into the 1940’s, NY State was the largest hops producing state in the country, it got hit with a blight, crop was wiped out, now Oregon & Washington State are the main producers. New York is making a comeback, a resurgence, it is the perfect companion product for A Taste of Long Island, which focuses on NY State,

particularly Long Island agriculture products. We are expanding to include Craft Beer, NY State Wine, working with East End wineries, such as Osprey Dominion – bringing the East End winery to Farmingdale Village. Customers can sample & buy from the brewery location”, added Jim Thompson. “At the farmers’ market, the farmers and vendors are selling direct to customers, with no middlemen. Visitors and customers can meet the vendors, ask questions about food production practices, and sample in most cases. There are benches to sit and relax and of course enjoy a casual stroll through the Village Green. With so many diverse and unique shops and merchants, while at the market, in town, check out what Main Street
