ome improvement projects can help homeowners transform their homes. Such projects are costly, but many homeowners save money by doing some, if not all, of the work themselves. The Electrical Safety Foundation International, a nonproﬁt organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety, recommends that homeowners leave electrical work to the professionals. Licensed electricians are well-trained, whereas homeowners may not be skilled enough to avoid accidents or injuries, which can prove fatal when working with electricity. Homeowners who take the do-it-yourself route with electrical work should consider these safety tips, courtesy of the ESFI, before beginning a home electrical project.

• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns. Each of these injuries is significant. For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project. • Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them. • Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work. The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects. Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

Security lights should range from 700 to 1,300 lumens for optimal brightness. Other lights needn’t be so bright. Furthermore, ensure that any fixtures that are being used are safety-rated for outdoors. Wet-rated fixtures are designed to withstand direct exposure to outdoor elements, advises the design experts at Schoolhouse, a lighting and lifestyle goods company. Damp-rated fixtures are built for outdoor locations protected from harsh weather. Look for the product details or work with an electrician to choose the right lighting choices. Lighting can transform outdoors spaces for the better.

This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. Town Collects And Delivers Over 300lbs Of Pet Food & Supplies

Town Supervisor Saladino, Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier proudly partnered with Long Island Cares for their Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive, which took place over several weeks and ran through April

15th. The drive focused on collecting food for our residents’ pets through Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which supplies free pet food and supplies to petowning families in need. Town officials recognized residents for their generosity in donating

On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services. As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

Counselors can explain how homeowners can work with lenders or agencies on forbearance plans or loan modifications. EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling. Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. Farmingdale School District Holds Wall Of Fame Ceremony not about being the most successful in your career,” said Farmingdale High School Assistant Principal and Chairperson of the Wall of Fame Committee, Jed Herman. “It’s about giving back to the community.” Farmingdale High School students also got involved with the ceremony. Journalists from the school’s newspaper, “The Paper Lion,” interviewed the honorees before the ceremony. Each spoke briefly to the crowd about what they learned and how these recipients inspired them. The late Linda DiOrio attended the University of Oneonta, graduating in 1975 with a degree in Elementary Education. After Ms. DiOrio’s son,

Erik, lost his battle with drug addiction in 2008, she galvanized her pain into a cautionary tale to share with teens and parents about the dangers of drug addiction. Ms. DiOrio presented at school events and public forums, sharing her family’s story. Erik’s tragedy was featured in Newsday in 2008 and 2009, where she stated, “It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a village to join together to work for change to protect them.” Mrs. DiOrio was the founder of the Erik DiOrio Memorial Scholarship, presented annually at the Senior Awards Night to reward those who “Like Erik” work with their hands. She wanted them to know their lives have value and that self-esteem breeds success and turn

We will be holding a candlelight remembrance vigil where you and a guest can reflect peacefully as your loved one’s name is read aloud amongst the beautiful outdoor setting of our Louis Natalie Mall, surrounded by the gentle sounds of live string music and the soft glow of string lights. The vigil will also include a nondenominational sermon before the reading of names. Although we know the passing of someone you hold dear is a painful experience for you and your family, we hope this tranquil evening

will be the perfect setting for you to celebrate their memory. Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd Session 1: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm (daylight vigil) Session 2: 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm (nighttime vigil) The vigil will be held over four sessions, two on each day, and tickets are limited to two per loved one. Due to the overwhelming response for this event, we kindly ask that all families respect this request to enable Pinelawn to support as many families as possible at the vigil. We understand that we cannot accommodate all of the families who have lost loved ones throughout this year and in years passed. However, we offer several remembrance events throughout the year, including our fall Candlelight Remembrance Vigil and our Lantern Lighting Celebration, to ensure more families have the opportunity to honor their loved one’s memory.

Mr. Daniel Kornfeld graduated from Hofstra University in 1982. He has worked in the public relations and communications industry for over twenty years and currently serves as the Administrations Supervisor for the Town of Oyster Bay. Mr. Kornfeld was both a Farmingdale Baseball League Coach and Treasurer. Mr. Kornfeld was active with the PAL, where he was both a Coach and Basketball Commissioner for twelve years and served on the Board as its Vice President for fourteen years. Mr. Kornfeld was an original member of the Farmingdale Community Summit and served as its Treasurer for sixteen years. Mr. Kornfeld is a member of the Chamber

of Commerce, serving on its Board for over twelve years. Mr. Kornfeld is also an active volunteer for many charitable organizations such as Winning Beyond Winning, Firefighters Charitable Foundations, VFW Post 516, John Theissen Children’s Foundation, and is a founding member of the MassapequaFarmingdale’s Men’s Club. Dr. Neil Strickman graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Buffalo and received his M.D. from Syracuse University. Dr. Strickman is a former co-director of the noninvasive department of the Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center (19821985) and was the 2016 Educator of the Year for Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Strickman currently works at Hall-Garcia Cardiology Associates at Baylor College of Medicine, where he is the

region’s only authorized physician investigator of carotid artery neck blockages for the Sapphire trial comparing surgery to stenting for patients at extremely high risk. Dr. Strickman has completed over 1,700 Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedures (TAVR) and published over 100 articles. Farmingdale’s Wall of Fame was established to honor distinguished Farmingdale High School alumni now serving as role models for the school community. Located in the high school lobby, the Wall of Fame is an homage to these community trailblazers and displays plaques for all honorees from years past. Candidates for the Wall of Fame must have graduated from Farmingdale at least ten years ago and have demonstrated success in their chosen professions following graduation.

At the Farmingdale School District, it is a time-honored tradition to recognize community members who have made a significant, positive impact. This year was no different. Three new honorees of the Farmingdale community will soon grace Farmingdale High School’s Wall of Fame. The 2022 inductees include Linda DiOrio (Class of 1971), Daniel Kornfeld (Class of 1978), and Dr. Neil Strickman (Class of 1969). On Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, an intimate ceremony was held in the lecture hall at Farmingdale High School. Honorees were joined by family, friends, District Administrators, and Board of Education members. “The Wall of Fame is

As part of the annual weeklong celebration, several events have been planned to honor, mentor and celebrate young people in Suffolk County. Suffolk County Youth Week is the result of legislation sponsored by Legislator Richberg and approved by the county legislature to designate the third week of May as “Youth Week” starting in 2021. A collaboration among the Suffolk County Legislature, Suffolk County Executive Bellone, the Suffolk County Youth Bureau, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, the goal of Youth Week is to recognize children between the ages of 9 and 12 as well as teenagers and celebrate their active participation in our communities. “I want to thank all of our partners and supporters who helped bring our second annual Youth Week to fruition,” said Legislator Richberg. “Youth Week is about celebrating our next generation of leaders, encouraging them to stay on the path of helping others, and giving young people more opportunities to get involved. PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and ﬁnes. “Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.” According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas. Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig. Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are

Town To Host The Special Olympics Spring Games In Farmingdale Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town will again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 21st, the games will include a full-day of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes - children and adults with intellectual disabilities - have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games. “Special Olympics are an

opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-abled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Farmingdale School District in making this important event a reality. I hope you’ll join us in witnessing the joy, courage, and determination of these inspirational athletes.” “Special Olympics New York provides yearround sports training and athletic competition in a

variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them a continuing opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, make friends, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families,” Diane Colonna, Vice President, Downstate Operations Special Olympics, New York said. “We are honored that the Farmingdale School District will host our Spring Games and make a difference in the lives of these athletes.” The event will be held on Saturday, May 21st at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex at Howitt
