Saving the Planet Farmingdale School District’s Farmingdale High School recently earned third place in the Long Island Regional Envirothon. The Envirothon is Long Island’s premier environmental science competition for high school students. As part of the competition, students

rotated between aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and environmental issues stations and answered questions as a team. Each station included 25 multiplechoice questions, which students answered by engaging in fun, handson activities involving the use of equipment, pelts, bones, tracks, maps, and

audio-visual devices. Students were also asked to present their solution to a complex environmental challenge to a panel of judges. Though Farmingdale High School finished in third place overall, the team had the highest score on the oral presentation segment of the competition.

SAVING THE PLANET - Farmingdale High School students represent their school at the recent Long Island Regional Envirothon. Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. New York City Police Department Detective 1st Grade Brian Moore, who died in the line of duty on May 4th, 2015 while serving the residents of New York City, will have a special dedication ceremony held in his memory at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Plainedge Park on Saturday, May 21st at 1:00 p.m. The event will include a statue unveiling and building dedication. “Detective Moore grew up in North Massapequa and proudly called the Plainedge community his home,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Town of Oyster Bay stands united with the Plainedge community, the Plainedge School District, New York City and the family, friends and neighbors of Brian in remembering this remarkable young man.” The son of NYPD Police Officer, Brian served with distinction during his career as an officer with the New York City Police Department and made over 150 arrests. He quickly earned the respect of fellow police officers with his tireless dedication to his profession and his inherent ability to root out crime and perform his duties at the highest level. His NYPD colleagues knew he was a natural. “To those who had the pleasure to know Brian, it was no surprise that he was able to leave such an indelible mark, both socially and professionally,” Supervisor Venditto said. “He had a unique ability to connect with people and felt a tremendous sense of duty as a police officer to

Beach Sticker Sale The early sale of seasonal beach stickers begins Saturday, May 14th. Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers at certain locations ahead of time to avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends only. Many residents eagerly look forward to Memorial

Day weekend when they will have the first opportunity to enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay. By purchasing a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, Town residents will avoid having to wait in line to purchase a sticker during the first few weekends of the beach season and be able to spend more time

in the sand. Beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 14th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall. In order to purchase a

beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits.

The sticker is acceptable at all Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents with beach stickers will have the opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches in the Town of Oyster Bay all summer long. Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will open for weekends only

beginning Saturday, May 28th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 25th. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.
