’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those ﬂip ﬂops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the ﬂoral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be ﬂourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Bringing New Vision

Howitt Middle School has a new student of the fourlegged kind. A black Labrador Retriever puppy named Skipper. For the next yearand-a-half, Skipper will be attending school at the side of Physical Education Teacher, Stephen Messina, training to be a guide dog. Howitt’s active environment is a great training ground for a puppy that might someday provide “eyes” for a blind person and presents a wonderful opportunity for the entire student body to participate in community service. The idea of becoming a puppy handler came from Messina’s daughter, Jenna, who thought it was a great way to give back. Principal Pena loved the idea - and gave approval even before Messina’s wife gave the thumbs up! Skipper is the second puppy Mr. Messina has taken in for the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown. His first dog,

Doug, was partnered last summer with a veteran in Louisiana, whose eye site is severely diminished by diabetes. Being a puppy handler is a big commitment that requires advanced training, bi-monthly obedience classes, and daily socialization. Handlers get their puppy at 8 weeks old, and bring them everywhere they go, into as many environments as possible. Messina says, “Pet stores are the most challenging place with all the smells, other pets, and low shelves with food.” After 14-18 months with their handler, dogs receive an additional 3-6 months of formal instruction with a professional trainer, before being matched as a guide or service dog for someone with disabilities. Only fifty percent of puppies make it through the training to become a guide dog for a blind person. The others are

placed with programs that match their strengths, like companions for veterans, or as bomb-sniffing canines. Skipper and the children of Howitt Middle School are learning the in’s and out’s together. When the yellow vest goes on, the children know it means hands off - and Skipper is learning that the vest means it’s time to go to work. With a wink, Messina confides, “When the vest is off I can’t get down the hall! Everybody wants to pet the puppy. So, if I need to get somewhere quick, I put the vest on.” “It really is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the process, and the meaning of the yellow vest,” says Messina. It also inspires children to think philanthropically, and incorporate like-minded community service into their own lives. He continues, “A lot of the kids say they want to do it someday, it really has a ripple effect.” Mr. Messina also hosts an after-school Puppy Club at Howitt to teach the children about what it takes to raise a guide dog puppy, and how they help people who are visually impaired. “It’s hard to say goodbye,” said Mr. Messina, “but when you go in, you know you’ll be helping somebody, and whoever gets him needs him more than me. When we said goodbye to Doug, I couldn’t be happier. I gave him a command, and we were good, like he was going off to college. And it was just so rewarding, we decided to do it again.” Doug was so popular at Howitt, he even made it into the middle school yearbook. Skipper seems destined to follow in his paw prints.

Student-Musicians Perform Over one hundred and fifty Howitt Middle School student-musicians and their parents recently traveled to Albany for Music in our Schools Month. The trip is an annual event that promotes music education and lobbies for school funding. Organized by NYSSMA, (New York State School Musicians Association) student-musicians from

all over the state perform three times a day in the South Concourse of the Capitol during the month of March. The Howitt sixthgrade band, concert choir, and select orchestra sang and played for an audience of local politicians. “It was an honor to perform in our State’s Capitol to promote music education in New York State,” said Music Teacher
