from the heartfelt letter she wrote to nominate her husband Paul Defendini. Farmingdale High School classmate Linda Citrano shared stories from her years attending school with Carol Kellermann, and Frank Tiscione spoke proudly of the accomplishments of his son, Steven Tiscione. The opening reception included light refreshments and featured music by the Daler Brass band—under the direction of music teacher Gina Pellettiere. The ceremony was attended by members of the board of education, administrative staff, teachers, and members of the community. The Wall of Fame honor is bestowed annually on select graduates of Farmingdale High School who have achieved a high level of distinction within their profession and now serve as role models for the school community. They
are chosen by committee after a six-month nomination process. Located in the FHS lobby, the Wall of Fame displays the plaques of all honorees
Middle School. In 2007, he was appointed School Business Administrator, and in 2010 was named the Assistant Superintendent for Business. In 2016—
from years past. Paul Defendini is the recently appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Farmingdale School District. He received his undergraduate, Master’s degree and Administrative degrees from Hofstra University. Paul previously worked as a teacher and Dean of Students at Howitt
under his direction— Farmingdale passed the Bond referendum for the sports complex and aquatic center at Howitt Middle School. He was appointed superintendent in 2018. Paul serves as the president of the Nassau Association of School Business Officials and received the Jenkins Award from the
Farmingdale Council of PTAs. He is an assistant PAL lacrosse coach, a Cub Scout leader, and works with the PB&J gang at St. Kilian Church. His two children currently attend Northside Elementary School. Carol Kellermann has worked with many charitable organizations, most recently as Chief Executive of the Citizens Budget Commission, a nonprofit nonpartisan organization dedicated to influencing change in the finances and services of New York City and state governments. She received both her undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University. Carol served as the Chief Executive of the September 11th fund, a $500+ million charitable fund created to provide assistance to victims of the terrorist attacks. She was also the Chief Executive of Learning Leaders, the oldest school
volunteer program in the country, with over 10,000+ volunteers in NYC’s public schools. Carol has worked with organizations such as CUNY, Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, PENCIL, and has consulted for the Fresh Air Fund, the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund, and the American Trial Lawyers Fund. Judge Steven Tiscione was appointed a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York in 2016. Prior to that, he was an Assistant United States Attorney from 2005-2016. Steven was also appointed to the position of Chief of the International Narcotics and Money Laundering Section. He is a graduate of Hofstra University and Yale Law School. Steven is the three-time recipient of the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force Award of Excellence, the

Three more distinguished Dalers now grace the walls of Farmingdale High School’s Wall of Fame. The newly inducted alumni are Paul Defendini (Class of 1997), Carol Kellermann (Class of 1969), and Steven Tiscione (Class of 1995). They were inducted during an early evening ceremony and reception at the high school on Monday, April 29, 2019. Farmingdale High School Assistant Principal Jed Herman led the program, which included remarks by Paper Lion journalists, Alayna Camisa, Erin Byrnes, and Anna Decker—who interviewed the honorees for their school paper. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Multicultural Showcase Farmingdale High School’s first annual Multicultural Showcase was held in the Commons on Thursday, April 17, 2019. It was the inspiration of members of an emerging club called R.E.A.L. Harmony. (Respect, Education, Awareness, Love). Farquharson organized a series of student performances—two acts per lunch period—that featured different cultures via song, dance, or fashion display. “This amazing and positive event grew from efforts to celebrate cultural diversity,” said Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson. Hats off to the students, who with the support of their advisors, committed to this initiative from the start.” Students enthusiastically gathered to see all the
different cultures on display. The acts included performances of Indian and Italian songs, a display of Muslim fashion, and choreographed dance routines from traditional Afro-Caribbean Fusion, Hip-Hop, Latin, African dance, and of course the FHS Steppin’ Dalers. Club member Madison Outing said, “We wanted to give anyone who doesn’t feel included a safe place to come and celebrate diversity.” The club advisors are Esther Kramer and Josseline Morales.

NADCA sets the industry standard

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Gorilla Conservation Project Farmingdale High School French language students are touring the district’s elementary schools to spread awareness about a gorilla conservation project, which is being helped by the collection of small electronics. The project was initiated by French teacher and frequent Walt Disney World visitor, Jill Nimphius. “Disney is very p h i l a n t h r o p i c and committed to environmental awareness, saving wildlife, and preserving the planet,” said Ms. Nimphius. “I explained to them that I teach high school French and I wanted to do a conservation project. That led me to Rachel Deneault, a Primate Carnivore Zoological Manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. She told me about their connection with GRACE— the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation
Education Center.” “Many people are not aware how modern technology is impacting wildlife and contributing to the gorilla conservation crisis,” continued Ms. Nimphius. “The mineral coltan that is widely used in cell phones and other electronics is sourced from mines in the French Congo, the only place where Grauer’s gorillas live. Recycling cell phones and small electronics reduces the need to mine inside the gorilla’s habitat.” Each spring, in honor of Earth Day, FHS French students (with help from the Wildlife Warriors Club at Howitt Middle School) have held a small electronics recycling drive, collecting old cell phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, and MP3 players, which are then sent to ECO-CELL, a leading electronics recycler. The French 5 collegelevel course at FHS is
designed to promote proficiency in French and to enable students to explore culture in contemporary and historical contexts. It encourages cultural awareness as students develop an understanding and appreciation of various aspects of the cultures of the French-speaking world. Sonya Kahlenberg, Executive Director at the GRACE Center recently reached out to commend the students for their work, saying “Our partners at Disney recently shared the wonderful news with me that you and your students have been recycling electronics and raising money to support GRACE. Thank you! It means so much to our team to have your support, and we love it when young people get involved. They are the conservation leaders of tomorrow, after all, so it is terrific that you have taken the initiative to get
them engaged in this way. ECO-CELL is a partner of ours and is doing very important work in helping to keep electronic waste out of landfills, and reduce
the threat on the gorilla habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo where we work. The effort of your students is inspiring, and I will be sure to pass along
this story to our team in the Congo. Thank you for your commitment to gorillas and GRACE. We are lucky to have you as friends!”
