District Honored Farmingdale School District Transportation Supervisor Joe Williams and Director of Information Services Kathy Hart were recently honored at the 13th Annual SCOPE School District Awards Ceremony in Holbrook. Mr. Williams was presented with SCOPE’s Support Staff Service Award. Ms. Hart was honored with an Administrator Service

of Directors President. “Joe is devoted to student safety and helps transport more than 6,000 students to and from school every day, while Kathy has played a vital role in providing accurate information that is essential for our programs.” Joe Williams joined the Farmingdale School District in 2000 as the District’s transportation supervisor. He is responsible for transporting more than 6,000 students to and from their homes in a safe, timely and cost-efficient manner. Williams plans for the satellite mapping and routing of nearly 80 buses, and ensures that preventative maintenance inspections and current safety procedures are conducted and enforced on all district vehicles. Williams is currently the elected president of the New York Association

Award. The winning recipients have collectively served the district for more than 45 years. “We are incredibly proud of, both, Joe and Kathy for their outstanding accomplishments and the distinct leadership they have brought to our district,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent of Schools and SCOPE Board

Golf Outing Benefit Island’s children has been demonstrated in their work as volunteers for CAPS and as leaders on the CAPS Board of Directors,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We applaud their efforts to prevent child abuse and bullying through their work and working to fulfill the CAPS mission of keeping every child safe from harm.” Nancy Greulich has been an active volunteer and contributor to CAPS since 1998. For 13 of her 16 years of service, she has served in multiple leadership roles on the Board of Directors, including Board President, and now, as social media manager. As an experienced, talented and sensitive CAPS volunteer, Nancy has touched the lives of more than 20,000 Long Island children. Susan Silverman has been an active CAPS volunteer and contributor for 14 years. Since 2006,

when she joined the Board of Directors, Susan has assumed leadership roles on the executive committee as President and Administrative Vice President. Susan’s dedication to the well-being of children is exemplified by her deep commitment to volunteerism, advocacy and keeping children safe. The Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services was founded in 1982. The CAPS Bully Prevention Center, opened in 2012, is the first of its kind to offer parents the direct support and resources they need to resolve bullying and cyber-bullying incidents involving their schoolage child. I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

Kids Of Distinction Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, in collaboration with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. Co-Founders Robert A J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, would like to remind residents that the deadline for registration to their upcoming cosponsored “Kids of Distinction” scholarship program is May 16th. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors within their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Ten outstanding Town of Oyster Bay youngsters will be honored for their commitment to their communities.”

“The objective of the program is to recognize kids who acted on their own initiative to take part in beneficial activities for their neighbors or community,” Philip said. “Past winners have certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. A student who goes the extra mile in their endeavors outside of the classroom deserves recognition so that it may inspire other youngsters to emulate this behavior. “Each year, we recognize a diverse group of students who really demonstrate caring and compassion to those around them,”

Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s group of winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor and we know these academic scholarships will help these students fund their college education. In these tough economic times every dollar helps.” This year the number of honorees has been increased to ten students in honor of the program’s 10th anniversary. Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grades and those in grades nine through 12. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many

wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We feel it is important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to nominate a student, or should a student want to self-nominate they should fill out a nomination form and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc., prior to the May 16th, 2014 deadline. Earth Day Celebration On April 26th and April 27th, the Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo hosted an Earth Day learning activity, in which children were encouraged to plant bean seeds, provide the proper care, and watch it grow. Children took a cup, filled it with soil, dropped in a couple of seeds, added water and more soil, and then covered the cup with plastic wrap.
