Portraits of Courage who has been using President George W. Bush’s book, Portraits of Courage, to inspire students to learn about the individuals who shape the tapestry of our nation. As part of the project, students painted portraits of their special guests. While the veterans sat for their portraits, they told students personal stories of their service in active duty. Many of the

visiting veterans were Farmingdale School District graduates and have family connections to students and staff in the District. This initiative was one of many of the Farmingdale School District’s innovative educational programs designed to immerse students in history and literature while letting them explore their creativity.

The “Principal for a Day” was selected during a Parent-Teacher Association rafﬂe. Third grade student Adam Schneider was the lucky student, and took his new responsibilities very seriously. “Principal Schneider” attended classes, worked with students, made announcements and

helped organize and oversee school activities during his one day as principal. Throughout the day he shadowed Saltzman Elementary School Principal Patricia O’Regan, helping students during classes and assisting administrators in their daily tasks.

Morning Mindset “Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its inﬂuence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. Display Case Unveiled

For over 114 years, The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) has collected and preserved precious mementoes which tell a wonderful story of the club’s achievements and contributions to the community of Farmingdale. Inspired by all this history, WCF Membership Chair, Ann Lomonte, CoChair, Judy Vilas, Historian Loda Romanelli, and many WCF members, spent numerous hours sorting through and cataloging the many boxes of memorabilia. Finally, on March 3rd, coinciding with Women’s History Month, and with the assistance of Farmingdale Public Library Director, Debbie Podolski and her staff, a beautiful display case was unveiled. Some of

the artifacts on display include the club’s original membership book and original minutes circa 1913, WCF handbook 1935-36, photo of club’s 22nd anniversary, copy of club’s civic project on the Women’s Suffrage Movement, original Metropolitan Long Island photo and article of Abigail E. Leonard, the club’s founder, at age 86, counseling pupils she taught decades ago, and a letter from the WCF dated June 27th, 1925 addressed to the Idle Hour Tennis Club stating the club’s greatest public interest is peace and demanding nationwide action. On hand to mark this auspicious occasion were Joseph Saladino, Supervisor Town of Oyster Bay, Rose Marie Walker, Nassau County

Legislator, Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt, Library Trustees Laurie Rozakis and Laura Ulrich, school district board trustees, Kathy Lively and Suzanne D’Amico, president of the Farmingdale/Bethpage Historical Society Ted Dorfmeister and members of the WCF and the Junior League of the WCF. In his remarks, Supervisor Saladino commented that “this cabinet will be a reminder to all women, girls, and men of the innumerable accomplishments and contributions of women everywhere.” Rose Marie Walker added that “all these accomplishments were done while raising families.” And McKevitt stated “it is always an honor to showcase the talents and successes of women.”

As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. The Town of Oyster Bay is seeking Activities Specialists for its Group Activities Program (GAP) Summer Day Camp, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced. The Town has openings at its camp at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, which will be held from July 5th, 2017 through August 11th, 2017 between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. “The six week program is extremely rewarding and entails working with special needs children and adults between the ages of 5 and 21,” Councilman Imbroto said. “The job is ideal for educators who are off for the summer. It is also a great opportunity for young people seeking to build up their resume.” Councilman Imbroto said applicants will take a leadership role with running the various activities. They must have a Bachelor’s Degree and have completed 1600 hours working with special needs children and adults. “Our TOB GAP Summer Day Camp is one of the finest programs of its kind in the country and working with the special needs community is truly fulfilling,” Councilman Imbroto said. The GAP Program, which is administered through the Handicapped Services Division of the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services, provides a unique social-recreational experience for developmentally disabled town residents in a well supervised setting. Mad About Music The Farmingdale School District’s Albany Avenue Elementary School recently celebrated March is Music Madness Month as part of the District’s mission to provide an outstanding musical education and help students develop their creativity. March is Music Madness Month is a unique celebration in the Farmingdale School District, during which students and teachers spend the month of March exploring a musical feast

in a tremendously fun and exciting way. Some of the activities included a community read of “The Energy Bus,” District teachers Catherine McLoughlin and Kevin Schwab creating weekly videos throughout March about car karaoke and getting the right people to ride with you, and student-created, musicthemed posters displayed throughout the school. Throughout the month, students were exposed to many different types of music and instruments

while educators taught the cultural and historical significance of different types of instruments and music. During the culminating assembly, students and teachers dressed in colorful costumes performed the energetic pieces they prepared in front of the entire student body. The assembly was packed with energy and fun for students and staff, after which students voted on the best performances by musical category and staff grade levels.
