Councilman Macagnone said. “Registration for Series 5 (May 3rd through June 26th, 2014) will begin on April 19th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.” “Learn To Skate” offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey. Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is 7 weeks in length (although there will be no classes on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th) and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m.,
Tuesdays & Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays from 10:50to 11:50 a.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week 7 with a recommendation for next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. “The Rinx Skating School staff is assembled of experienced and
qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. Their philosophy is simple; teach the fundamentals of ice skating with a major emphasis on fun,” Councilman Macagnone said. “We are proud to offer quality programs that are great for every skater, whether you are

Veterans Appreciation Breakfast On Wednesday, May 7th, The Larkfield will be hosting the Second Annual Suffolk County Veterans Appreciation Breakfast from 8:30 until 11 a.m. The event is sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer and Suffolk County Veterans Service Director Tom Ronayne and will honor veterans Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive, and DuWayne Gregory, Presiding Officer.
The breakfast was established as a way to thank the men and women of our military for their service to the country. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 29th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 2nd with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The award is given to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. IRA has since 1990 generously supported various hospital events
including the Golf Classic, Fortunato Breast Health Center and One Enchanted Evening gala. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board to honor representatives from the Federation of Organizations’ Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs in celebration of National Service Day. Supervisor Schaffer and
the Town Board thanked them for their commitment to community service and presented them with an official Town Proclamation. As part of the Foster Grandparent program, seniors provide one-on-one assistance and tutoring to children in schools, Head Start centers and pre-schools across Suffolk
County. There are currently 27 Foster Grandparents helping out in nine schools within the Town of Babylon. The Senior Companion program allows volunteers over the age of 55 to assist in providing friendship and support to elderly residents who may be frail or disabled.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Bob received a ballistic vest thanks to a non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. A $950 donation was made to the charity by the Romano Family in memory of William F. Romano, retired Decorated Detective and member of New York City Police Department Elite Crime Scene Unit. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA, whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related
agencies throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life saving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 930 law enforcement dogs in 39 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of $880,000. The organization orders the U.S. made vests exclusively from distributor Regency Police
Supply in Hyannis, MA, who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor. New K9 graduates as well as K9’s with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are US employed, certified and at least 19 months of age. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was named as a charity partner in March of 2014 in a nationwide Groupon Campaign which raised over $335,000 in 19 days. The non-profit will be providing over 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the protective body armor in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department who sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January of 2014.
