In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,
the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was
nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Budget Proposed The Farmingdale School District announced at the Board of Education meeting held at Howitt Middle School on Wednesday, April 15th, that it has adopted the proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year. The meeting was the fourth in a series of workshop sessions and special meetings the Farmingdale School District Board of Education coordinated in an effort to get community input and inform the Farmingdale residents of the proposed budget for the upcoming
school year. “We make it a priority to maintain an open dialogue with residents in our community throughout the budget process to best meet resident’s needs and provide the most benefits to our students,” said Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business. “Our number one priority is to create an exceptional academic experience for our students to help them accomplish their goals both in and out of the classroom.
We will continue to meet with Farmingdale residents leading up to Tuesday, May 19th, when the community will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed budget.” At the meeting, the District gave an overview of the tax levy limit calculation and explained that the proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year stays within the District’s specific tax levy cap of 1.28 percent based on the formula provided by New York State. The District also reviewed
the budgeted revenue and cost projections based on funding received from New York State as well as the four public referendums, which require community approval. The public referendums include Proposition #2, which aims to create a new capital reserve to support capital improvement projects and upgrades to District facilities including roof replacements and other needed renovations districtwide. The reserve would not require an
increase to the tax levy. The community will also have the opportunity to approve the Farmingdale Youth Council Appropriation for the 20152016 school year as well as elect three trustee members of the Farmingdale School District Board of Education for a three-year term. To help ensure members of the Farmingdale community are well informed regarding the proposed budget, the District has scheduled more than 25 visits to a variety of community groups, including parent-
teacher associations, civic associations and senior citizen groups, to provide information and answer any questions concerning the proposed budget. A calendar of budget presentation meetings is available on the District website, www. farmingdaleschools.org. The District reminds residents to vote on the 2015-2016 proposed budget on Tuesday, May 19th at the Howitt Middle School east gymnasium from 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

HOMELESS AWARENESS - On April 18th & 19th, youth from Venturing Crew 130, along with other Venturers from Nassau County, participated in a homeless awareness and service program. The youth spent the evening sleeping in a cardboard box with little comfort items. Each also helped to collect and sort donated clothing and toiletries while others prepared a hot breakfast to serve to those less fortunate in NYC. National Women Build Week Women in Hempstead, New York are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity, Nassau County (HFHNC) is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event. On May 2nd and May 6th, local volunteers will be responsible for raising all four walls as well as installing the roof shell for HFHNC’s brand new home build in Hempstead. This home will mark the launch of the third home constructed by HFHNC in that neighborhood. Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Supervisor, will be in attendance to support the large group of volunteers expected. “For decades, Habitat for Humanity has made the American dream of home ownership a reality for neighbors in our area and across our nation,” Murray said. “I thank
Nassau County Habitat for Humanity, Lowe’s and all volunteers and supporters for bringing National Women Build Week to Hempstead Town. This is a wonderful opportunity for women in our area to help fellow neighbors in need achieve their dreams.” Wayne Hall, Mayor of the Village of Hempstead will be speaking to the media and the volunteers to thank them for their support. National Women Build Week, held May 2nd-10th, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years. “We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week,” said Michel Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Nassau County Habitat. “This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family in need of better housing.” Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each
