a beloved referee, Phil LoNigro, a 59-yearold retired corrections officer who graduated Farmingdale High School in 1980, also serves as a volunteer medic with the Farmingdale Fire Department. Receiving the Town of Oyster Bay’s highest honor was: Farmingdale High School Trainer Phil Fandale, East Meadow High School Trainer Dan DeSimone, Farmingdale High School Team Doctor Matthew Heller, and Parent/Nurse Lisa Schwartz. These four incredible individuals responded quickly, joined in assessing the patient, began chest compressions, and successfully used the AED/Defibrillator to shock the patient back to life! The official, who

was quickly transported to the hospital by the South Farmingdale Fire Department, was soon praising those who saved his life! It is a fantastic story! Congratulations to all of the incredible recipients, and thank you to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues in Town government for recognizing these extraordinary lifesaving actions. Pressing Flowers Flowers can have sentimental value, particularly those received as gifts or those that were part of momentous occasions, like weddings. Fresh flowers have finite life spans unless measures are taken to preserve the blooms. The flower experts at ProFlowers say pressing flowers can preserve them for years to come. While flower lovers can invest in a flower press, other heavy objects also can be effective at pressing flowers. Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed. Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning. Place the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all

within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days. After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips. Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. Make Some Noise! Farmingdale School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. In its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Farmingdale School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “Receiving this award is a testament to the culture of pride that the Farmingdale music program is within our community,” said Farmingdale’s Director of Fine Arts, Greg Warnokowski. “It is only through the dedication, talent, and commitment of our teachers that keeps our music program strong. Special thanks to our community, parents, and school administration for their commitment to music

education and ensuring that it is part of a complete education for the children of the Farmingdale School District.” Since the passage by Congress in 2015 of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and a stated emphasis on a wellrounded education, many school districts have recommitted to music and arts education programs and found that in this time of a national pandemic, provides a valuable way to keep students engaged in school. ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants. NAMM Foundation research has revealed that school districts widely use these grants to address instructional gaps in music and arts education access. After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers. Students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Later in life,

individuals who took music lessons as children show more substantial neural processing of sound: young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism. “Farmingdale’s music program has continued to grow every year,” said Superintendent Paul Defendini. “I could not be any prouder of our hard-working students and our tenacious staff of professionals. Amidst the current pandemic, they still managed to keep our students engaged.” The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,400 members worldwide. The foundation advances active participation in musicmaking across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs. Students are back in school, sports are up and running, and a long-awaited vaccine is finally here. “I am so thankful for the volunteer effort of our administrators, nurses, Walgreens, Village, and South Farmingdale EMS, The Marketplace at 317,” said Superintendent Paul Defendini. “Dozens of people donated their time and services to support this critical event, and together we vaccinate more than 300 staff members. Farmingdale is an exceptional community, and I am prouder than ever to call myself a Daler.”

Over 300 people signed up! Having teachers and staff vaccinated is essential to the full safe reopening of all school buildings. Navigating through the New York state’s websites to find an

available appointment at a local vaccine center has been a struggle for many Long Islanders. The Farmingdale School District is extremely thankful to Walgreens for making their School District a priority and making the vaccination process seamless for the community. The long hours distributing these vaccines was also made easier by a generous donation of catered, grab-and-go food

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Saladino, Town Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca proudly partnered with Long Island Cares for their 10th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive, which took place over the last few weeks. The drive

focused on collecting food for our residents’ pets through Baxter’s Pet Pantry, which supplies free pet food and supplies to pet-owning families in need in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Supervisor Saladino and Town officials were honored for

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola reminds residents, there is an increased number of sea turtles stranded on north shore beaches due to a condition called cold stunning. “When water temperatures drop below approximately 50 degrees, sea turtles become lethargic and are unable to swim, as they are basically experiencing hypothermia,” said Councilman Labriola. “When this occurs, they can float up to the surface and

become vulnerable to boat strikes or wash ashore and become stranded, which can be fatal. If you see a turtle on the shoreline, please do not put it back into the water. Instead, cover the turtle with seaweed or call the New York Marine Rescue Center.” The Town of Oyster Bay, in partnership with the New York Marine Rescue Center, recently installed signage at north shore beaches to help educate the public about this condition. The signage also provides guidelines on what

to do and what not to do if you come upon a stranded turtle. Tips include: • Move the turtle above the high tide line • DO NOT put the turtle back in the water • Cover the turtle with seaweed or dry wrack • Mark the spot with a piece of beach debris or draw an arrow in the sand • Call the NY Marine Rescue Center Hotline at (631) 3699829.

Raynham Hall Hosting Online Book Launch Event Detailing George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will host a virtual book launch and lecture by author Bill Bleyer on Monday, May 3, at 7:00pm, detailing his new book George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide, ahead of its May 10th publication. Supervisor Saladino said, “Oyster Bay’s history is chock full of historical importance that many may not be aware of, and that is why I am so delighted to see that Raynham Hall Museum has found a way to continue hosting events such as this, utilizing creative solutions to handle gathering restrictions in place to stop the spread of the pandemic. Raynham Hall serves an important mission to perverse our history and educate our children on

the past, and this online book launch and lecture will continue to further that goal in the safest manner possible!” Raynham Hall Museum was the home of Robert Townsend, a central member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. The home was occupied by British officer Col. John Graves Simcoe during the Revolutionary War. Transformed into a Victorian villa in the 1850s, the house offers two eras of interpretation, with the front of the house showcasing the period of the Revolution, and the back of the house preserving a late 19th century aesthetic. While still closed due to the pandemic, the garden is open to the public, and virtual school tours are available by appointment. Bill Bleyer’s new book,
