They were bold, beautiful and bodacious; and the over 75 unique pieces of “bra art” were auctioned off for a good cause on the evening of Thursday, April 14th, at the “Bodacious Bras for a Cure” event. Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers. The night kicked off at
the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these creative bras were all on display and guests were able to put in their bid during the silent auction. The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with loved-ones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “We are so excited that this year’s event was so

Lending Support successful,” said Linda Bily, Director, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, “the funds support with all of the little things that actually help make the journey through cancer a little bit easier - like support groups, educational materials, transportation, wigs, and peer mentors.” More than 270 guests attended the event on Thursday evening. Top bid, of $2,300, went for “Hometown Hero,” which was created by Eileen Constantouris with the support of NY Mets Pitcher, Steven Matz. Additional awards went to the “NY Rangers Legend” for “Best in Show”; “Dream Catcher” for ‘Most Inspirational’; and “In Honor of our Spuds” for the famous “Booby Prize.”

Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, April 30th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will once again join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Spring Cleanup Day. Town employees and volunteers have come out for over twenty years to roll up their sleeves and complete a thorough cleanup of the beaches
and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor. All day people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats to clean up trash and remove discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, as it helps preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being
sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches
or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Despite popular belief, debris disintegration of all this trash actually takes weeks, months or even years as opposed to a few days. Last year’s Harbor Clean Up saw over forty thousand pounds of debris collected by volunteers. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to
increasingly worse damage for the environment. Anyone who swims, boats or fishes in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just wants to help protect and enhance the environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, is invited to join us on April 30th. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t stay for the entire day; even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events
like this will go a long way towards preserving the environment for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we
often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.
Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

The Farmingdale School District recently celebrated the efforts of Farmingdale High School students Brian Hayden, William Hroch, Matthew LewisFlood, Brandone Carbone, Robert Keane, Nicholas Carbone and Farmingdale
High School teacher Jim Hughes, who shaved their heads to increase awareness and raise funds to support childhood cancer research as part of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The Farmingdale School District encourages
all of its students to participate in various events supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and students have collectively raised more than $90,000 for the organization over the past several years.

Budget Adopted for Approval The Farmingdale School District has adopted the proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year. The proposed budget reflects the necessary funds to support the many highquality academic and extracurricular programs offered to students as well as essential infrastructure improvements to District facilities. The District has coordinated a series of workshops in an effort keep residents informed of the proposed budget for the upcoming school year and residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed budget on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016. “A lot of time and effort has gone into developing the proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year to support the District’s ability to continue to create an exceptional academic experience for our students at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers,” said Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business. “Our priority is to maintain transparency throughout the process so residents are as informed as
possible. We will continue to hold information sessions leading up to the vote.” The announcement was made at a recent Farmingdale School District Board of Education regular meeting, during which Mr. Defendini reviewed how much aid the District has received from New York State, provided an overview of the cost projections for the upcoming school year, and explained the tax levy limit calculation. The District’s proposed 2016-2017 budget stays within the District’s specific tax levy cap of 0.17 percent based on the formula provided by New York State. Along with voting on the proposed budget for the upcoming school year, Farmingdale residents also have the opportunity to vote on three additional propositions. As discussed during the April 6, 2016 Board of Education special meeting/budget workshop, the District is requesting to use $1.5 million from existing capital reserves to complete a roof replacement project at
Northside Elementary School. If approved, this improvement project would come at no additional cost to the taxpayer - this referendum is listed as Proposition #2. The other two referendums include approving the Youth Council’s budget for the 2016/2017 school year and electing two trustee members to the Farmingdale School District Board of Education for three year terms. These are listed as Proposition #3 and Proposition #4, respectively. To help ensure members of the Farmingdale community are well informed regarding the proposed budget, the District has scheduled more than 25 visits to a variety of community groups, including parentteacher associations, civic associations and senior citizen groups, to provide information and answer any questions concerning the proposed budget. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or
mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is made up of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. These professionals teach skaters the fundamentals of ice skating while also placing a major emphasis on having fun.
