Farmingdale High School Art teacher Ms. Cara Palermo and the High School’s Knitting Club recently hosted special guest knitters Francine DeKranes and Claudine Vacirca to teach students about the cultural history of knitting in Scotland. The guests’ visit was coordinated by the school as part of an innovative Farmingdale School District program to help students explore art and culture from all over
the world in a unique, engaging way. The guest knitters brought examples of their hand-knit apparel and shared about their experience exploring the Scottish knitting industry. Students learned about the geography and people of Scotland and surrounding areas, the famous Fair Isle sweaters, how sheep are sheared, and how yarn is processed and produced. The guest presentation inspired studentknitters to explore their
own creativity through choosing materials, colors and styles in order to make practical items with cultural significance. In addition to enabling students to connect with their education in a unique forum, this hands-on lesson helped students expand their global horizons to connect with the historical tradition of Scotland and explore what knitting means to the Scottish people.

Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.
If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

The tree was a brainchild of LICADD staff to honor and memorialize those lost and pay tribute to those dedicated to the field of substance abuse and recovery. Living Legacy Tree
The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 29th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. The
festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and flower vendors, music and rides for small children. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders
who need alternative forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world.” The bike parade is officially listed as a sister march to the Climate March on Washington that day. Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself in conversations with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded
CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bike-friendly community realize that they are not alone. Participation in the parade is completely free, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at http://www. Car-LessLI.org/parade. As part of its robust arts curriculum, the Farmingdale School District recently welcomed renowned artist Edgar Jerins to Farmingdale High School to lead a collaborative lesson with Farmingdale High School art teacher Regina Nicholas featuring realistic self-portraits. Students in the Drawing and Painting and Advanced Placement Art classes learned the tradition of selfportraiture dating back to the Renaissance. Classical use of compositional
techniques guided the students while they drew their self-portraits in charcoal. The drawings were then layered with shellac and completed with oil paint. The collaboration between professional artist, high school art teacher and students was a huge success and resulted in portraits students can include in their college portfolios. Edgar Jerins is a classically trained artist, and currently teaches at the New York Academy of Art. His work is exhibited

A Champagne Brunch was held by The Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC), under the leadership of its president, Frances Rotondo, at The Woodlands of Woodbury to pay tribute to the founders of the many women’s clubs that make up this Federation. This was the second such event in two years and was attended by over 100 members. President Rotondo read part of a beautiful poem entitled, Phenomenal Women, by Maya Angelou and then introduced the LIFWC Board and Department Heads. Five speakers from various
clubs inspired guests with many interesting and fascinating stories about their club founders. Some of the original club founders were women who rolled bandages during WWI, who marched for the Women’s Suffragette Movement in the early 1900’s, who organized 80% of the nation’s libraries and who served as hostesses for visiting international guests at the 1939 World’s Fair. This year’s guest speaker was Donna Scherer, former President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NY 2008-10. In addition to holding many chairmanships, Ms.

Scherer was also Mayor of the Village of Bellerose. Bowlers, sponsors and spectators recently came together at Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs, raising more than $22,000 to benefit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD). ACLD Foundation’s second annual Bowling For An Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought people supporting ACLD together, with members of the ACLD family joining ACLD partners and the community for some bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults
with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, increasing their independence and fostering supportive relationships within the community. “For the second consecutive year, the people ACLD supports and those who help us pursue our mission enjoyed an incredibly special and rewarding afternoon,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith “We are grateful to all the bowlers and sponsors who made this event a success.” “Bowling For An Enviable Life is a wonderful, fun-filled
day that everyone who believes in and supports the ACLD mission can come out and enjoy, along with their families,” said Mark Small, CFO/COO of Allegiant Health and ACLD Foundation Board Member. “I was very proud to be involved in this event and to contribute to its success.” More than 350 bowlers participated and several dozen spectators came to show their support for the bowlers as well as ACLD. Nominated for National Award At the dinner, Nassau County Commander Bill Walden was honored for his hard work and many accomplishments over the past year.
West Hempstead High School senior, Sofia Gutierrez and Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Culinary student has been nominated to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. “It’s exciting to be in the running for this award,” MILITARY BALL - Pictured: Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino, Nassau said Sofia. “Coming to County Commander Bill Walden, Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer and Barry Tech is the best of my day, I get to do what Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker.
I love and my academics have improved.” Sofia is the senior class president at West Hempstead High School and is the head of the school’s student council. She organizes everything from senior prom fashion show to class night, where they do sports, skits, and dance. She was nominated by her school guidance
counselor for this honor. “I’ve always been interested in culinary – baking and pastries are my favorite,” Sophia says with a smile. “Before my dad passed away, we baked together a lot. He was a baker chef at Hofstra University and I always cooked with him.” Her culinary journey started when she baked a cake for her school’s guidance office and, “they suggested that I apply for the Barry Tech culinary program. I’m so happy I did,” says Sophia who will be attending Johnson and Wales in the fall. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. They final winners will be announced by the end of the month.
