S.M.I.L.E. Day Farmingdale High School’s fourth annual S.M.I.L.E. Day, hosted by the S.M.I.L.E. Club, took place on Friday, April 12, 2019. S.M.I.L.E. stands for Something More In Life’s Experiences. The club— made up of nearly seventy 9th-12th grade students— meets twice a month to participate in activities like Twister, basketball, and karaoke. “The only prerequisite for joining is a smile!” said teacher and club advisor Diana Rossi, who plans the event every year with coadvisors Danielle D’Aponte and William Sperduto. When students arrived for school in the morning they were greeted by chalk outlined smileys and yellow smiley-face balloons. In the Commons during lunch, club members sold t-shirts and handed out smiley face stickers and pins with the help of Farmingdale’s enthusiastic mascot, Dale.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Coastal Steward Long Island works to preserve and protect Long Island’s precious marine environment through education, preservation and restoration. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving.

Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

The Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School Drama Club staged two performances of The Wizard of Oz on Tuesday, April 16th. Younger grades were treated to a morning performance, and the older grades—plus parents—were invited to

an afternoon show. The fabulous cast included two students (Cassandra Gershman and Stephanie Piombino) playing the role of Dorothy. The first Dorothy was dressed to pay homage to the beginning sequence of the black and white classic

film. The second Dorothy made her entrance when the character lands in the colorful world of Oz and attains the iconic ruby slippers. The show was codirected by teachers Angela Gross and Susan DeSario.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

Coping with an Empty Nest Many people find it rewarding to start a family and raise children. Watching kids grow through the years and sharing in their experiences can bring life to a household. Mothers spend 18 years or more devoted to their children, and often their identities are defined as “Mom” above all else. A decade ago, two Farmingdale parents— Monica Kuchinskas and William Hroch—launched

the local event. Resident Sharon Piraino helps coordinate it every year. “We are so overwhelmed by the amazing way that Farmingdale has embraced this cause,” said Ms. Piraino. “It’s a wonderful school district, and a wonderful town.” Several honored children— known as cancer fighting warriors— were in attendance with their families. Last year, to spark younger participation,

an elementary school fundraising competition was initiated between the Albany Avenue Avengers and the Woodward Parkway Warriors. This year they were joined by the Northside Ninjas and the Saltzman Samurais—growing the number of young student participants to 84. With the help of online tools, children encouraged people to sponsor their shave or cut (boys get their heads shaved and girls donate hair six inches or longer). Students who wanted to opt out of the shave/cut, but still participate, helped solicit donations during various school fundraising events like pajama day and penny wars. The Albany Avenue Avengers ruled the day! Not only did they win the elementary school competition, they were the number one fundraising team for the whole event— raising $37,579 for the foundation. Thirteen students at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School formed a team called Kids for a Kure

and Howitt Middle School students participated in a skating night to add funds to that team’s totals. Students at Farmingdale High School, part of the Daler Dudes, helped host a mini spirit week leading up to the main event—selling hats and bracelets to solicit donations. Among this year’s “shavees” were several teachers and administrators—including Superintendent of Schools Paul Defendini. His barbers were the very spirited duo of Albany Avenue Principal Joseph Valentine and Woodward Parkway Principal Patrick Klocek— who relished the honor of shaving their boss’s head! “The event was absolutely amazing!” said Superintendent of Schools Paul Defendini. “I was beyond impressed at the amount of money that was raised and the comradery that existed from the first shave to the last. With the children and the community members so enthusiastically cheering

each other on, it felt more like a rock concert than a fundraiser! I continue to be profoundly impressed by our student’s sense of

The very first St. Baldrick’s event was held on St. Patrick’s Day in 2000 at Jim Brady’s Pub in Manhattan. It was the idea of three men— Tim Kenny, John Bender and Enda McDonnell—who challenged each other to shave their heads to raise money for kids fighting cancer. In 2004, they created the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which now hosts more than a thousand events worldwide.

It’s official! The Farmingdale School District has helped the greater community achieve—and well exceed— the milliondollar fundraising milestone for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The St. Baldrick’s #Shave2Save event took place at The Nutty Irishman on March 24, 2019. It was an extraordinary day, attended by residents and enthusiastic supporters from the Farmingdale School District. Now in its ninth year, the local event raises money to fund pediatric cancer research and provide care for children going through cancer treatment. The 2019 totals won’t be fully calculated for a few weeks, but early estimates put this year’s total at 185K— of which over 77K was raised by the school district. Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.
