Savvy drivers recognize that maintenance is essential to keeping their vehicles running strong for years on end. Such maintenance ensures vehicles are safe to take out on the road, and basic upkeep also protects drivers’ financial investments in their cars and trucks. Drivers who are not mechanically inclined tend to put their vehicles in the hands of a trusted mechanic to perform routine maintenance like oil changes, but there’s a host of simpler vehicle maintenance tasks that drivers don’t want to overlook, some of which can be performed without visiting the auto body shop. • Brake inspections: Brake inspections are best left to the professionals, who can check the thickness of brake pads and look for other indicators of excessive wear. The automotive resource Cars. com recommends having brakes inspected during

routine tire rotations, which many automotive professionals suggest should be done every six months. • Car wash: Car washes might not be the first task drivers associate with vehicle maintenance, but they can prevent longterm damage to cars and trucks. Damage from bird droppings and road salt and ice melt products in the winter can damage a vehicle’s paint job and its undercarriage. Wash the car on your own at home or visit a professional car wash to perform this simple yet vital maintenance at regular intervals and whenever you notice significant buildup of dirt and grime on the car’s exterior. • Air filter: The air filter on a car or truck prevents debris, dirt and other contaminants from getting into the engine. The auto insurance experts at Allstate® advise drivers to inspect their vehicle air filters once a year. Air filters

in need of replacement may appear dirty, and reduced fuel economy, unusual engine sounds and reduced horsepower are some other potential indicators that an air filters needs to be replaced. • Windshield wipers: Windshield wiper blades are easily overlooked, but various automotive experts recommend replacing wiper blades every six to 12 months. Old wiper blades won’t perform at peak capacity, dramatically reducing visibility during heavy rain and snowstorms. Anyone can replace their own windshield wiper blades in a matter of minutes, and new blades won’t break the bank. Vehicle maintenance is not exclusive to tending to what’s under the hood. The program returns this year after being postponed last year due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns. “Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that my administration is able to provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship and supervision from experienced government professionals, and I am excited and proud to announce that we will be bringing it back after its temporary hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.” This federally-funded program compensates students at a rate of $15 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. The program will operate June 3rd through August 11th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North HempsteadGlen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay. Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles. Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause. Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

The automotive repair service Fix Auto says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time. UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colors. To prevent potential sun-related damage, take these precautions. • Avoid direct sunlight. Park in the shade as much as possible. • Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little. • Use a windshield

Heroes Honored For Lifesaving Actions At Farmingdale High School Football Game Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand joined with

the amazing individuals, including two high school athletic trainers, a doctor, and a parent nurse, who

combined to save the life of an individual who collapsed on the field during a Farmingdale

High School football game. The incident occurred in the second quarter of a contest between Farmingdale High School and East Meadow High School on the afternoon of Saturday, March 20, 2021. Dan DeSimone, an Athletic Trainer with East Meadow High School, got to the victim first and immediately began CPR. Farmingdale High School Athletic Trainer Phil

Fandale responded seconds later with the defibrillator and used the AED, with assistance from the school’s doctor and a parent nurse, to shock the referee back to life. Although he was disoriented, the victim was soon back to breathing and talking. The victim, a Farmingdale resident and a volunteer medic himself, was transported to the hospital via South Farmingdale Fire

Department ambulance and was soon praising the athletic trainers and other first responders who saved his life. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Hand commended the combined efforts and the quick and skillful actions of this caring and highly skilled team of rescuers and honored them with Town citations as their actions truly the saved the life of this individual.

Registration Now Underway for Town Summer Recreation Program

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent! Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times! So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE Why Is Tire Rotation So Important? Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid topoffs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires. Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep. Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side. According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear

down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly. Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced. Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires. Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association,

Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires. Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations — some free of charge. In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company. This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery. Many auto service centers will then align and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off. Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance. Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.

From the Desk of Mayor Ralph Ekstrand Welcome to Spring Everyone! We have been enjoying warmer temperatures and nice weather and it is great to see spring flowers blooming! Village Trustee Walter Priestley recently gave an informative presentation at 317 Main Street on the State of Farmingdale Village to The Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, and other civic and business organization attendees, which both Trustee Cheryl Parisi and I attended. The State of the Village is strong, not only have we weathered this tough time financially, but camaraderie has been high and new businesses are still moving in! Thank you Walter for giving this presentation, here are some highlights of topics discussed: Village Parking Lots have been re-done and look terrific. The Beautification Committee continues its magic! The heavy task and meeting the challenge of Snow Removal this year. Rezoning and approval of workforce housing on Route 109. Board of Trustees approval for the Farmingdale Village Business improvement district BID - the first in Nassau County in 3 decades! The team effort by everyone in responding and dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic – and our heroic Farmingdale Fire Department/Emergency Services, continues to meet every challenge – thank you to all Heroes! To maintain reliable water service to the community, the existing 500,000-gallon elevated Water Tower on Eastern Parkway is in need of upgrades and after evaluating all options; the decision was made to replace it. Just a reminder Farmingdale Village water is tested daily and meets all safety requirements. Replacing the elevated

Water Tower is an important milestone for Farmingdale Village and the Board and I are happy this project is moving ahead. We are pleased to share some additional insight/updates regarding the Water Tower replacement project from the Village’s Engineering consultant, D & B Engineers and Architects. Merrick Utilities was awarded the project and contracts were signed on April 7, 2021 Electrical work has begun for the new tank system, and shovels are expected to be in the ground in a few weeks. Final completion is expected in early 2022. Since this is the Village’s only elevated tank, the new tank will be built adjacent to the existing tank so the existing tank can continue to serve the community until the new tank construction and testing are completed. The 500,000-gallon structure is a critical water supply asset that provides water to meet peak summer and fire flow demand; crucial to maintaining safe water pressure levels. FEMA recently announced they are helping to ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) with a Funeral Assistance program. “Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA will provide financial assistance for COVID-19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020”. We hope everyone is healthy and are glad that COVID-19 cases have been declining in New York State and locally in Nassau/ Suffolk counties. Please consider getting the COVID-19 vaccination if you have not yet been vaccinated. We look forward to enjoying outdoor activities and events safely coming back when possible. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are excited to announce the return of drive-in movies this spring. Free pop-up theatres will offer drivein experiences to Town of Oyster Bay residents. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “Drivein movies will return to the Town of Oyster Bay for residents to enjoy

great family-friendly films from the comfort of their own car while taking in the spring breeze. Blood Donations Critically Needed to Help Replenish Low Supplies Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood this blood drive on April 24th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Clerk LaMarca added,

“It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Office of Public Information at (516) 624-6380. Town Accepting New Applications for 9/11 Walls of Honor Memorial Honors Victims of 9/11 Illness

Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed

names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with

cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last

brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure

at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave
