During the event, parents and students combined intellectual forces to solve literary and mathematical challenges for points. Activities involved reading comprehension and counting exercises. He’s been umpiring in the majors since 1988, a profession which demands that he visit each city on the major league circuit. It’s during those trips that he takes time to visit veterans who are patients in VA medical centers as part of the DAV VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) program. “I want to bring smiles and brighter days to those veterans who have given so much to our country,” Mr. Layne said. “I want them to know they are appreciated.” There are 197 VA medical centers in the US

It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and ﬂower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however ﬂeeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be ﬂooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

The Farmingdale School District recently met with Farmingdale residents at a Board of Education Special Meeting/Budget Workshop to discuss the District’s proposed capital improvement projects and the capital reserve funds that are part of the proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year. The projects as a whole are intended to cut costs and enhance the academic environment for students and staff throughout the District at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers. During the meeting, Farmingdale residents were also offered an opportunity to provide input as part of the District’s focus on openly and transparently developing a budget that closely reﬂects the needs of

the community. “The Farmingdale School District keeps the best interest of our students and community in mind when developing the budget for the upcoming school year, which is why we focus so heavily on long-term planning and financial stability,” said Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business. “Each year, we look forward to meeting with members of the Farmingdale community to review the work we are doing to continually provide students with the tools and resources to succeed both in the classroom and beyond. Our schools are known for being some of the

best on Long Island, and with our community’s help and input, we plan to keep enhancing our ability to provide a healthy, safe and fruitful learning environment for years to come.” For the 2016-2017 budget, the District is requesting to appropriate $1.5 million from existing capital reserves to complete a roof replacement project at Northside Elementary School, which is listed as Proposition #2. Due to the District’s proactive financial mindset, this project would come at no additional cost to the taxpayer if approved. “Unfortunately we cannot predict the political landscape and the state funding we will receive year over year, so we have

made it our mission to establish a forward-looking mindset to maintain stability regardless of the economic climate,” said Mr. Defendini. “We believe the proposed budget will help the Farmingdale School District maintain its reputation as a high-quality academic institution, and the capital plan we’ve created over the years will enable us to implement necessary improvements at no additional cost to the taxpayers.” During the presentation, Mr. Defendini also announced the completion of several energy-related capital improvement projects that were part of the last several budgets, including boiler replacements in all District buildings and window

replacements at all District schools. In addition, the District made a concerted effort to address energy conservation by identifying areas for daylight harvesting controls, adding 765 occupancy-sensor lights and addressing 16,000 light fixtures. These initiatives are projected to result in significant energy savings for years to come. As part of the 20162017 budget, the District plans to follow its path toward energy efficiency by installing a new webenabled supervisory controller to activate automatic temperature control throughout the school. This is one of the many programs the District has put forth within the upcoming school year’s

Music Lovers Scholarships

MATH & LITERACY - Farmingdale School District’s Northside Elementary School recently hosted a Family Math and Literacy Night for students and families in the community. During the event, parents and students combined intellectual forces to solve literary and mathematical challenges for points. Activities involves reading comprehension and counting exercises. This event is part of a Farmingdale School District initiative to promote community and family participation in education in a fun, creative way.

The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived from and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development. This year, as they celebrate their 90th year, they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert. The performers for the

concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a list of almost 200 other winners from the past 65 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards. This year’s winners are: • Third Place - Kwaku Owusu, Bay Shore High School, Baritone • Second Place Nicholas Burkel, Sayville High School, Cello • First Place - Sara Mercurio, West Islip High School, Alto Saxophone After the concert, there will be time to meet and

greet the performers and share in fellowship and light refreshments. The concert will be held at the United Methodist Church of Islip, 350 Main Street, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10, adults; $5, students - and may be purchased at the door. This is the final meeting and concert of the year. The group will resume its regular schedule and concerts in September, 2016. Meetings are the last Monday of the month at the United Methodist Church, at 1 p.m. All are welcome. For further information, contact Lynne Knippler, President, at 631.581.9297.
