Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2016-2017 School Tax Levy is due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and telephone number on the check. “By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to April 1st.” Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall West, 74 Audrey Avenue,

Oyster Bay, or by check only at our office in Town Hall South (rear entrance), 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments. In addition, the Hicksville Annex, at the TOB Parking Facility, 55 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville, will be open to accept payments by check only, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on May 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments, should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the

computer system to reject the payment. Residents now have free access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. Budget Adopted for Approval Continued From 3 meeting, during which Mr. Defendini reviewed how much aid the District is projected to receive from New York State, provided an overview of the cost projections for the upcoming school year, and explained the tax levy limit calculation. The District’s proposed 2017-2018 budget stays within the District’s specific tax levy cap of

reserves to reconstruct bathrooms at various schools. If approved, this improvement project would come at no additional cost to the taxpayer—this referendum is listed as Proposition #2. The other two referendums include approving the Youth Council’s budget for the 2017-2018 school year and electing two trustee members to the Farmingdale School District Board of Education for three year terms. To help ensure members of the Farmingdale community are well informed regarding the proposed budget, the District has scheduled more than 25 visits to a variety of community groups, including parentteacher associations, civic associations and senior citizen groups, to provide information and answer any

The Farmingdale School District proudly announced today that the Farmingdale High School Robotics Team, the “Robodalers”, has qualified to enter the 2017 VEX Worlds - VEX Robotics Competition. The team qualified for the world competition by defeating 39 other teams and receiving the “Build Award” and “Think Award” at the 2017 VRC Southern New York State Championship. The VEX international competition, presented by the Northrop Grumman Foundation, will take place April 19th through April 22nd, 2017 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Farmingdale High School’s Robotics Team is exceptionally passionate and dedicated - as evidenced by the team’s successful performance in the 2017 VRC Southern NY State Championship,” said John Lorentz, Superintendent of the Farmingdale School District. “The Farmingdale School District provides an environment of academic excellence for its students, and everyone in the District fully supports our ‘Robodalers’ as they reach ever greater heights.” The 2017 VEX Worlds competition brings together top robotics teams from around the world that participated in the VEX IQ Challenge, VEX Robotics

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.
