Students from Ms. Scheiner’s, Ms. Alexander’s, and Ms. Barthel’s classes listened to Dr. Goodall speak about the importance of taking care of our planet and making the world a better place for people, animals, and the environment. She also told them about her Roots and Shoots youth program and its mission to inspire young people to make a difference in our world. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

Farmingdale Ice Hockey Team Farmingdale School District has announced its decision to formally recognize and support the local ice hockey team on a district level. Back in March, the Farmingdale Ice Hockey team—which plays under the New York Islanders High School Hockey League—attended the board of education meeting to advocate for ice hockey to be recognized as a varsity sport. However, ice hockey isn’t on the list of sanctioned sports for Section 8 Athletics— as dictated by the state. The granting of a varsity designation goes beyond any district’s control. Nevertheless, Superintendent Paul Defendini, Assistant Superintendent Glen Zakian, and Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson met with six members of the ice hockey team to

discuss other measures of support that the district could provide. The players presented several ideas; nearly all of them were able to be granted. Going forward, all senior players will be invited to the end of year awards night, and the team will be provided a meeting space during the winter sports time-frame following the athletic recognition ceremony. They will also be eligible for awards and receive certificates from their coaches. The ice hockey team will be represented in the yearbook (as a club in 2019 and next year in the winter sports section—as the yearbook has already been drafted), and receive wall space for future ice hockey achievements. The players agreed to work with Dr. Thompson to raise money for the materials that the Technology Honor Society will use to create their wall.

The team was also granted the ability to fundraise at school events, submit recruiting and event flyers for distribution, and put forward public address announcements to promote their games. While the team can’t officially earn a scholarathlete award (those awards are given by the NYS High School Athletic Association to only state sanctioned sports), the district has agreed to add the ice hockey team to the roster of “club teams” (i.e. Steppin’ Dalers and Dalerettes) and will give them recognition if they earn a 90 grade-point average. “These young men took the time to advocate for themselves and for something they believed in,” said Superintendent Paul Defendini. “I couldn’t be any prouder of their character, courage and candor.

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy!

Connected Learning & Leadership Summit education. It’s the type of professional development teachers rarely get to experience—all free to attend. Educators spend time identifying structural challenges, connecting with others in the field, and discovering new methods to facilitate learning. The day began with an opening conversation—with several students, high school teachers Jim Hughes and Alanna Schaffer, and local business owner George Andriopoulos—to discuss the skills and experiences students need to thrive in an ever-changing society. The students talked about their experience in Innovation Lab and how it’s leading them to discover their passions and cultivate their skills around creativity, critical

thinking, and complex problem solving. They’re learning that there’s no reason to wait until they’re done with

what can be done to begin making a difference. Teacher Jim Hughes talked about his role in supporting the mindset of

school to start thinking about plans for their future. While there’s no specific content, the driving force is students’ curiosity around challenges that the world is facing and

the class. “Challenges will always be here,” he said, “it’s how you deal with them that really matters.” “No one looks at the clock during innovation lab,” said sixth-grader

Nicole Varriale, who uses the class to develop her interest in the practice of law. Throughout the morning, attendees picked from a series of topics, spread out over four consecutive sessions—each about forty minutes. Twentyfour educators and administrators from the Farmingdale School District presented sessions, as did teachers from other districts. Topics included: Social Emotional Learning and Growth Mindset, Educating Students to Become Successful Citizens in a Global Society, and The Power of Robotics in Our Schools. Angelina Kern, and eighth-grader at Howitt Middle School ran her own session, titled, Creating a Movement, Lessons from a Fourteen-year-old. She

currently runs a nonprofit to raise awareness about breast cancer called Take a Kick out of Cancers (TKO Cancers). She spoke about how the class—and her supportive parents—have inspired her to go after her passions and dreams at such a young age. The last session of the day was decided by the attendees themselves, who proposed top topics for conversation. At the end of the summit, Dr. Brennan and the students organized a final gathering in the library to discuss takeaways and next steps. Nearly 300 educators, parents, and community members from the greater New York area attended the 6th Annual Connected Learning and Leadership Summit on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale. This year’s theme was Preparing Kids for Real World Challenges. Dr. William Brennan, Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development, founded the summit in 2014 to advance the conversation around innovation in education by connecting like-minded, passionate educators for a day of collaborating ideas in a way that infuses new possibilities into our schools. During the summit, educators are asked to think about what’s possible, and move away from factory-style, regurgitation methods of

Recognizing Your Life Cycles year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice. We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion. This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle. A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life. Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again. Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Gian Fanelli has recently opened Jaxson’s Automotive, located in the Walmart Shopping center in Centereach, just east of Leslie’s Pool Supply.

Gian runs Jaxson’s as a general maintenance shop, along with his brother BJ. Gian’s stepfather Mark was who he and BJ got their earlier education in mechanics from, and he was part of the original business plan. Unfortunately, Mark has since been involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He is okay but is no longer able to work alongside them. Gian has always stood out

We all know a grand opening is a planned event that is designed to shine a light on yourself, however, in preparation for his grand opening he took things to a higher level. Gian diverted the much needed attention from himself and shifted it to those in need. It was all about Lighthouse Missions, which is an amazing organization that feeds the homeless and less fortunate people living among us.

Since then, Gian has doubled down on his commitment to others by continuing to care for Pastor Jim and the other Lighthouse volunteer’s cars whenever they are in need. He also hosts a continual food, toy and coat drive to help meet the demands of the many who would otherwise go without. I also learned that around last Christmas, a family was supposed to pick up their car from Jaxson’s but was not able to pay at that moment… Gian released the car to them at no charge and told them about the great work Lighthouse Missions was doing. He encouraged them to seek some assistance. The family was very grateful and as soon as their rough patch

came to an end they came back and paid their bill. Now we all know a good deed is not done to be boasted about, but sometimes a nice story helps you truly get to know a person! Gian and BJ both share the desire to dispel the old stereotype of the untrustworthy mechanic or that car repairs always cost a fortune. They do honest work for honest pay. There isn’t anything fancy over at Jaxson’s, just good mechanics doing good work and building relationships along the way. Pastor Scott Kraniak of Centereach Bible Church met Gian early on as he opened up Jaxson’s. Pastor Scott, a huge “car

guy” himself, with a love for all things Jeep, has become a regular customer. He and Gian now consider each other friends. The extent of this new friendship was most evident as Pastor Scott recently officiated Gian’s wedding. Gian and his wife Rachel have a beautiful baby girl named Lucy. The purpose behind these spotlight articles is to learn about the people behind your local businesses (and who doesn’t need to know more about their chosen mechanic?). After all, this is someone you need to trust not only for a fair price, but for quality work ensuring your safety. That being said, Jaxson’s is a good choice.
