Gelfer was part of Carl Fischer Music’s “Meet Our Composers Booth,” where he spent time answering questions and connecting with other teachers and composers. He also attended workshops on building a Mariachi program in your school and how to advocate for underrepresented groups in music. Kitchen Redesign District Food Services Gets A New Logo Courtesy Of High School Student

Earlier this school year, Farmingdale School District’s Food Services director, Alessandro Palumbo, had an idea to rebrand the department. He reached out to Greg Warnokowski, director of Fine and Performing Arts, and together came up with the food services logo contest. Farmingdale High School art teachers were tasked with getting their students involved with

the rebranding. Students interested in the contest created designs featuring the Farmingdale school colors, logos, and mascot. After sorting through all the entries, Palumbo selected a winner. Sophomore Lucia Assalone created the new logo of the Farmingdale Food Services Department. Lucia’s design will appear on department letterhead, food menus, and staff uniforms. In addition, Lucia was

awarded a complimentary food services uniform shirt featuring her design and ten free snacks from the cafeteria. Runners-up, sophomores Kasey Boyle (2nd place) and Paige Mathes (3rd place), received several free snacks from the cafeteria for their designs. Thanks to everyone who entered the contest, and congratulations to the finalists.

HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS HELP STRENGTHEN SHORELINE - Hundreds of volunteers of all ages joined with Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Steve Labriola and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato at the Town’s Dune Day event at TOBAY Beach. This project brings together groups, families, and individuals concerned about our environment helping to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline by planting stalks of dune grass. Dunes along the south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds.

Maier: Oyster Bay Harbor Boat Moorings Available Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier reminds residents interested in mooring their boats on beautiful north shore to contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources to obtain one of the 700 moorings offered just off the shore of the marina, located at Theodore

Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. “Our beautiful Town boasts water on both its north and south shores, making boating a popular activity for our residents,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Our pristine harbor has convenient moorings for boating enthusiasts who are looking to access

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents to participate in the Spring Beach Cleanup and Marine Education Expo, scheduled for April 16th at the Town’s north shore beaches. The event, held rain or shine, is cosponsored by Friends of the Bay. Beach cleanup volunteers – including individuals, groups, families and friends – should meet at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park (off Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay) beginning at 9 a.m. “This great environmental cleanup initiative features volunteers and Town employees rolling up their sleeves and working side-by-side to remove

litter and debris from the beaches and shoreline along our north shore,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We invite residents of all ages to pitch in and help make a difference in our community! This year’s event will also feature new activities, exhibitions and a scavenger hunt for kids.” Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. In prior years, beach cleanup events

have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris collected by volunteers. Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. Together, we’re improving Mother Earth by cleaning up and protecting our environment.” No preregistration is required. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

PSEG Long Island Encourages Eligible Customers To Take Advantage Of Financial Assistance Increased global demand and lagging production are driving up energy prices worldwide and abnormally cold winter temperatures across the United States have increased regional demand for natural gas, a volatile commodity used to generate electricity. PSEG Long Island understands the heightened financial pressures this may place on households, and encourages customers to take advantage of programs that exist to help people struggling with utility bills. There are also many ways customers can lower their bills by using less electricity. “Like people all over New York State, we know our customers have felt an impact from the unusually high commodity prices of natural gas this winter and that, for some, it compounds financial pressures they are already under due to the pandemic,” said Rick Walden, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Services. “We have been working hard for many months to reach our customers in arrears and let them know we are here to help. We want our customers to know that financial help is available, and to give them tools to help maintain their household budget while these market conditions persist.” Like many electricity providers around the nation, electricity for PSEG Long Island’s customers is purchased from a variety of different generation sources, including natural gasburning power plants. The increase in natural gas prices has driven up the costs to generate electricity. In accordance with a policy established by the LIPA Board of Trustees, a hedging program is in place to reduce the volatility of power supply costs for customers. Hedging provides price stability in case of unforeseen commodity market and weather events that drive up prices.

PSEG Long Island also continues to partner with social service agencies and perform outreach to assist customers who have fallen behind on their bills. For the past five months, field representatives have been making customer visits, connecting one-on-one with residential customers who have past-due account balances to discuss payment methods, accept a payment or work out a payment plan to pay down balances over time. PSEG Long Island representatives work with customers to find the best solution for the household. Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. The Charity of the Month for April is

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse.

Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Families have access to such Hope For Youth services as mental health, ChildParent Psychotherapy, Children and Family Treatment Support Services and the Health Home program. In addition, Hope For Youth partners with the “Parenting the Second Time Around” (PASTA) team from the Riverhead-based Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to help grandparents navigate the educational, medical and legal systems to get the support and resources they need. Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families.
