The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines

Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational ﬁeld program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later. The event will be held on Friday, May 13th, and preregistration is now open to social studies classes across Long Island. The program integrates classroom curriculum with operational armor, military

ﬁeld tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France. Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.” Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for

students that integrates classroom study guides with an extraordinary ﬁeld experience. As the classroom returns to normal following COVID this program regains the ability to tell the story of World War II, its legacy,

and why the chilling scenes we are seeing in Ukraine are yet another chapter written by that conﬂict.” Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel Chief Historian Emeritus and Chairperson of the NYC World War I Centennial

The Charity of the Month for April is

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential. Remarkably, through its multiple residential and out-patient facilities and programs, Hope for Youth impacts the lives of more than 14,000 local children, teens and families each year.

To fulfill its vision of offering residential, community-based alternatives for emotionally troubled children, Hope for Youth first opened a group home in Bellmore to serve adolescent males. Since then, the agency, which now has a staff of 175 employees and interns, has grown to offer a range of programs that provide a full spectrum of services, all reflecting a detailed and closely monitored hierarchy of needs of Long Island’s youth and families. While the bulk of Hope for Youth’s funding comes from contracts with Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York State, donations from supporters also serve as a key component of its budget. Hope for Youth also depends upon support from volunteers from the community, who help with administrative support, community outreach, fundraising, residential programs and event planning. The visionary founder of Hope for Youth was the late Nassau County Family Court Judge Elizabeth Bass Golding, a pioneer activist for children’s rights. Judge Golding had learned that, in the mid 1960s, half of the children in the state’s psychiatric hospital system were there simply because of the lack of suitable, viable, community-based home alternatives for youth. A problem solver, the judge proceeded to spearhead a

From the Desk of Mayor Ralph Ekstrand Welcome Spring! We look forward to warmer weather, more outside activities / community events, and dining alfresco!! Great news - the rehabilitation of Five Corners Park is nearing completion, with signage, lighting and two trees to be added. The park re-opened just in time for Spring! Thank you Trustee Cheryl Parisi for spearheading this project - the park looks fabulous as the gateway to Main Street from Melville Road! Additionally, the fountains at the pocket park near Northside Elementary School will be turned on soon and we look forward to new plantings throughout the Village in May. Thanks to Joe Fortuna of the Nutty Irishman for planning the 8th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade which was held on March 13th. It was a great sunny day - thanks to all that participated, attended and to all that

helped with the parade logistics! The Board of Trustees and I were thrilled to have Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Superintendent, as the Parade Grand Marshal. Youth Open Mic Night on March 18th was a success, and featured great musicians and entertainers. Thanks to: John Capobianco and Vicki Gruber, cochairs of the Cultural Arts Committee, and to Chuck & Vinny who hosted the event and to all that participated and attended. The next youth open mic night, open to youths 21 years and younger, is set for Friday April 22nd at 7pm, to sign up email openmicfarmingdale@ gmail.com, or sign up at the event ﬁrst come, ﬁrst served basis. The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Meet the Easter Bunny returns to the Village Green on Saturday April 9th. The egg hunt is at 11 am sharp for children

11 years old and younger. Please arrive early and bring Easter baskets, friends and family, weather permitting. The event is free to attend and is planned by the Farmingdale Cultural Arts Committee. Some merchant updates: Reserve early for Easter Brunch, Lunch and Dinner throughout the Village. The Dark Horse Tavern plans a brunch on April 16th, “Meet the Easter Bunny” with family fun activities, 10am - Noon. Palmer’s American Grille, located on Conklin Street, offers fun dinner shows, such as Murder Mystery, Physic nights, Paint nights and more. Catering space at The James Room (a collaboration of 317 Main Street and The Nutty Irishman) is coming soon. Debbie has been the Director at the Farmingdale Public Library for 20 years. On March 12th, Farmingdale Robotics students competed at the Southern NYS Championship. Team 1353V ﬁnished in fourth position out of 56 teams, making it as far as the semiﬁnals and receiving the Innovate award, qualifying them to the World Championship in

Dallas, Texas, this May. In Dallas, Farmingdale will compete against 800 schools worldwide, all playing the game “Tipping Point,” which requires the robots to place rings on posts, carry the posts to their scoring zones, and climb a see-sawlike platform for points. A portion of the match

is “autonomous,” using computer code alone to play the game. The robotics club will learn from other teams, compete with and against robots worldwide, and Dalers will volunteer in critical positions to support STEM. Congratulations Dalers!

Town Launches New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their handcrafted goods. Applications are now available for the event which will be held on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to ﬁll out an application today to take part in this great opportunity to

showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.” Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10 canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs are provided on the

application, available on the Town’s website. Art in the Park is run by the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division. The program focuses on hand-crafted goods, including ceramics, watercolors, glass, jewelry, wood, leather, sculpture and more. Third Or Nothing! Farmingdale Playcrafters Present Puffs Some people are born with the capacity to do great things, defeat the forces of darkness, and change the world. Puffs is about kids who sit next to those people in class. Farmingdale High School Playcrafters presented the Harry Potter parody Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, on March 18th. The play follows the lives of wizard classmates who weren’t in the limelight. “After last year’s drama, 12 Angry Jurors, I wanted to produce a comedy,” said theater teacher and director Glen Beck. “Upon racking my brain and reading numerous play scripts, Puffs rose to the top as the ideal choice.” Glen Beck cast the entire show twice. Cast E performed evening shows on March 18th and 19th. The clast included: Sara Hughes (narrator), Luke Pichichero (Wayne Hopkins), Ryan Sweeney (Oliver Rivers), Megan Dreher (Megan Jones), Robert Silverstein (Ernie Mac), Gabriella Pace (Hannah), Victor Dreher (J, Finch Fletchley), Trinity Babino (Sally Perks), Gabriella Stein (Leanne), Alexa Nazario (Susie Bones) and Eamonn

McLoughlin (Cedric). Cast M performed morning, and matinee shows on March 17th and 19th. The clast included: Rebecca Kenjesky (narrator), Thomas Haggerty (Wayne Hopkins), Ryan Marbit (Oliver Rivers), Lily Scalfani (Megan Jones), Alex Consentino (Ernie Mac), Allison Banz (Hannah), Clay Bany (J, Finch Fletchley), Emma Graziadei (Sally Perks), Kaylin Cleere (Leanne), Kairi Knudsen (Susie Bones) and Josh Viera (Cedric). Rounding out the casts playing three or more roles: Grifﬁn Buksa, Lucia Assalone, Ava Lanot, Nova Bulin, Jenna Hammelman, Joanna Posillico, Nicole Varriale, Shea Hoitidis, Ben Hoffman, Jordan Rosenberg, Addison Moller, and Isabella Winter. “This is about those lovable losers, the Puffs,” said theater teacher and director Glen Beck. “You do not need to be a “Potterhead” to appreciate the story and its message, be proud of who you are. And I could not be more proud of my student performers and crew members.” Puffs is Glen Beck’s ﬁfth production with the Playcrafters. He’s joined by Jamie Capasso and Erik

Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, is a 2015 original play by New York-based playwright Matt Cox. The play is a comedic retelling of the Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling. The play premiered at The People’s Improv Theater on December 3, 2015.
