Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a snifﬂe. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the snifﬂes and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a ﬂower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Student Council members at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District have been collecting items for the Long Island-based organization Birthday Wishes. The organization provides homeless children in the area with special parties on their birthday. As their first time donating to this cause, students created ﬂyers and posters advertising items such as wrapping paper, juice boxes and party hats that were requested from Birthday Wishes.

Last Hope Receives Grant Last Hope Animal Rescue recently received a $15,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to help fund the preparation of incoming kittens for adoption. Kitten season is about to begin within weeks. This grant will not only allow our organization to place more kittens in loving, responsible homes, but will work in parallel to our various efforts to spay/ neuter & vaccinate feral cats, in hopes of reducing the tremendous cat overpopulation on Long Island. To further establish the sweeping transparency reforms promised by Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Oyster Bay Town Board will hold a special work session prior to the Town’s regularly scheduled Town Board meeting on Tuesday, April 4th, at 10 a.m. at Oyster Bay Town hall. The Board will publicly hear multiple proposals in response to a request for proposals for the operation of a food and beverage concession service at the Town’s Golf Course, Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced. This will be the first in a series of special meetings designed to increase and continue his mission of transparency. The work session will take place in the Town Board Hearing Room in Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and will be open to the public, who are welcome to attend and observe the process. Celia Blumm of Farmingdale High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2017” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Celia Blumm offer Long Island students deep expertise,

extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” Celia Blumm will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 30th, along with 11 other teachers from

across Long Island. Following the award ceremony, Professor Annette Gordon-Reed who holds chairs in Legal History at Harvard Law School and in History at Harvard College, will lecture on “The Hamilton Image in the American Mind.” Gordon-Reed has won numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation (“Genius”) Award and the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. Celia Blumm has taught Humanities at Farmingdale High School for the past 15 years. After raising her children as a stay-at-home mom, Ms. Blumm served as a part time HIV/AIDS educator and activist. Working with high school students reaffirmed her “empathy” for students going through their teenage years, the “most joyous and trying time of life.” Ms. Blumm eventually graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University with a degree in Comparative Literature. Teaching at Farmingdale

has allowed Ms. Blumm to “combine my love for literature and my desire to spend my life among teenagers.” The Humanities program at Farmingdale is a “rewarding and rigorous program … a unique teamtaught course of study which combines the historical and literary achievements of Western Civilization with its cultural development throughout the centuries,” including art, architecture, music and philosophy. Ms. Blumm is passionate about her purpose in the classroom: “I strive to reignite the curiosity, the wonder, the awe and love of learning. Our goal is to help to craft citizens: critical and nuanced thinkers who are comfortable living in a world of varying shades of complex greys.” Ms. Blumm was nominated for the award by Suraj K. Muralidharan, a Farmingdale High School alum who is currently a freshman at Harvard College. Mr. Muralidharan said that Ms. Blumm’s class was rigorous and closely “simulated a

college classroom.” Despite her high expectations, she also maintained a “unique and always witty sense of humor and approachability.” “I have never enjoyed an English class as much as Mrs. Blumm’s.” John Lorentz, Superintendent of Schools for the Farmingdale School District, supports Mr. Muralidharan’s views. “Celia Blumm is an exceptional teacher who has combined a life time of experience and incorporated it into her teaching. Her work has produced some of the highest achieving graduates of Farmingdale High School. We are honored and proud to have her as part of our team.” The Farmingdale School District has had three previous winners: Peter Macchia in 2014, Scott Drucker in 2012 and James Hughes in 2008. Mr. Macchia, who teaches science, was also honored with a scholarship to visit Harvard. At the ceremony on April 30th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will also announce the Distinguished

Teacher of 2017 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s 12 Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach economics, English, history, math, physics, and science research. The winners teach in the Baldwin, Farmingdale, Herricks, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Mt Sinai, Farmingdale, Sewanhaka, Smithtown, and Syosset school districts.

Celebrating the Season Farmingdale High School’s Varsity Football Team recently celebrated an outstanding season and honored players during the Nassau County Football Coaches Association’s annual awards banquet. The team was undefeated in the regular season and appeared in the Nassau County Championship game, finishing with a 10-1 record. The entire team was recognized for achieving Scholar-Athlete status from the New York State Public High School

Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). The NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Program recognizes varsity teams that have a total Grade Point Average (GPA) of 90.00 or above for 75 percent of the team’s roster. This prestigious award recognizes the District’s commitment to nurturing students’ growth as conscientious citizens, scholars and athletes. Individual players Jordan McLume, Anthony

Proposition Announced The Farmingdale School District presented its 20172018 proposed Proposition #2 to the community at the Board of Education’s second special meeting/ budget workshop on March 22nd, 2017. Proposition #2 is for the appropriation of five million dollars from the District’s Capital Reserve Fund to reconstruct bathrooms at various schools throughout the District. During the meeting, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent

for Business Paul Defendini outlined how the District’s forward-thinking and fiscally responsible budget planning for the 2017-2018 school year meant that Proposition #2, if passed, would come at no additional cost to taxpayers. “Proposition #2 is intended to support the Farmingdale School District’s mission to provide a safe, clean and operationally efficient environment that best supports the education of our students,” said John Lorentz, Superintendent of Schools

of the Farmingdale School District. “Many bathrooms throughout the District are extremely out of date; some have not been upgraded for more than 50 years. This expenditure will help save maintenance and repair costs in the long term.” Proposition #2 specifies that bathroom improvements and expenses are not to exceed five million dollars. The proposition’s funding would be expended from the Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserve Fund, which

was established in 2015. By utilizing this capital reserve fund the Farmingdale School District will be able take on the project at no additional cost to the taxpayers. “These capital reserve funds were created as part of the District’s future-oriented budgeting philosophy so that the District could maintain the physical assets of our school district in a manner the community expects,” said Mr. Defendini. “The Farmingdale School District tries to provide as much

information and transparency as possible as we work with the community in developing each annual budget. We encourage residents to take the opportunity to be fully informed before the May 16th vote by getting involved in the budgeting process.” The District is hosting six special meetings, public hearings and budget workshops throughout March, April and May at Howitt Middle School to relay important information about the budget and answer

the community’s questions. More information and a schedule can be found on the District’s website, http:// www.farmingdaleschools.org. The next Board of Education special meeting/budget workshop will take place on Wednesday, March 29th, 2017. The District reminds residents to vote on the 20172018 proposed budget on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 at the Howitt Middle School east gymnasium from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

DUNE DAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Town Officials, Islanders’ legend Bobby Nystrom and caring Volunteers at the 2017 Dune Stabilization Project at TOBAY Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to help protect TOBAY Beach. This recent event included many caring volunteers working side by side for a great cause. Planting dune grass goes a long way in stabilizing the construction of dunes as it enhances and protects the beach’s environment.
