Budget Workshop to attend the many budget workshops we have organized, at which we will review key concepts of the proposed budget.” The District recommends establishing a new capital reserve to efficiently fund capital improvement projects and upgrades to District facilities. The proposed capital fund would operate with an established maximum limit and would be used to revisit the District’s capital-improvement needs including roof replacements Districtwide, a comprehensive public school safety program and other related needs identified by the District’s Facilities Advisory Committee. The reserve fund would require voter approval, and it is included in the proposed budget as “Proposition #2.” The reserve would not require an increase to the tax levy. In addition, as part of the District’s ongoing Energy Performance Contract, Farmingdale announced that 26 classrooms at Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School were renovated with new ceilings, lights

and occupancy sensors since last year. The District anticipates these upgraded amenities to be implemented in the remaining District buildings during the summer of 2015. All of these projects come at no additional cost to taxpayers. The District also announced several Districtwide and buildingspecific projects to enhance safety for students and staff throughout the District. These upgrades include installing new security cameras at all District buildings, replacing the playground surface at Albany Avenue Elementary School and installing new sidewalk portions and walkways at Howitt Middle School and Northside Elementary School. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect our schools. The District reminds residents to vote on the 2015-2016 proposed budget on Tuesday, May 19th, at the Howitt Middle School gymnasium from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Farmingdale School District held its second Board of Education Special Meeting/Budget Workshop on March 18th to help detail various aspects of the District’s budget for the 2015-2016 school year. At the meeting, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business Paul Defendini presented the District’s capital-improvement-andenergy-efficiency projects that are incorporated in next year’s budget. Looking For Lifeguards Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is currently seeking individuals who are certified to work as lifeguards for the 2015 summer season. “Anyone who is qualified to serve as a lifeguard has the ideal opportunity for employment with the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Supervisor Venditto. “There is certainly a sense of pride that goes along with the position, and our lifeguards have the added bonus of working at the town’s beautiful beaches or

Freshman students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute recently presented their findings in a major study aimed at reducing the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The teen scientists have been analyzing heavy metals in the local environment to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and insects. Students prepared posters representing the results of their research and presented them to an audience of parents and administrators from their home districts, as well as Nassau BOCES board members. Audience members reviewed the young scientists’ work and asked several probing questions about their findings. The presentation was essential to the learning process. Not only did students strictly follow

poster presentations. “They possess a fundamental understanding of the research they are conducting, which is a direct result of their instruction.” “This experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” reflected Shawn Edouard from the Uniondale UFSD. “As we collected samples for our research, we learned how human industrialization is affecting our environment. From that point on, I personally started to look at the whole world from a different point of view.” “This project not only opened our eyes to what we, as humans, are doing to these poor organisms and how we’re destroying their environments,” noted Olivia Valentino from the Uniondale UFSD, “it also opened our minds to the knowledge we can learn as field researchers.”

(APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to “Ease The Burden And Find The Cure.” Founded more than 53 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information

& Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information &

Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure. More research is needed,” she said.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly

affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease.
