Oyster Bay Harbor Boat Moorings Available Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh reminds residents interested in mooring their boats on the beautiful north shore to contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources to obtain one of the 700 moorings offered just off the shore of the marina, located at Theodore Roosevelt

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many new guidelines and restrictions to our retail and service establishments that serve and sell alcohol. To assist local businesses, YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) and Farmingdale State College’s Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) are hosting FREE TIPS Training, a skillsbased training designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. There are times when our abilities are tested, and the education we were afforded throughout our academic careers is put to good use. During the Farmingdale versus East Meadow varsity football game, Nassau County high school football official Phil LoNigro collapsed during the second quarter of the game. Thanks to the training and quickthinking of the athletic trainers also on the field that day, what could have been an unbelievably tragic event emerged as one of inspiration and hope. “It was a team effort, said Farmingdale athletic trainer Phil Fandale. Dan was doing chest compressions, and I got the AED. From the time he went down until we got him back with the AED was

less than a minute and a half. It was a whirlwind.” On that seemingly ordinary Saturday morning, Mr. LoNigro’s heart stopped beating. Farmingdale athletic trainer and alumni Phil Fandale, and East Meadow athletic trainer, Dan DeSimone, did not allow the situation to get the better of them. Instead, they used the training and resources at their fingertips and saved Mr. LoNigro’s life. Mr. DeSimone was first on the scene and began chest compressions right away. Mr. Fandale was quick to join Mr. DeSimone on the field, employing the use of a defibrillator to provide the lifesaving shock to Mr. LoNigro, who laid unconscious and unresponsive on the field. The duo’s collaborative

efforts were integral in this heroic moment. What makes this story even more incredible is the fact that Mr. LoNigro is also one of Farmingdale’s own, as a graduate of the Class of 1980. “It is moments such as these that I am reminded by the community we continuously build upon in the halls and classrooms of our schools, said Superintendent Paul Defendini. “The odds of two Farmingdale graduates crossing paths is not so farfetched, but the chances of one saving the other’s life? Some may call it a coincidence. I am inclined to call it a miracle.” At this time, Phil LoNigro is still in the hospital having tests run but is doing well.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,

he was still the first person to ask others what they needed and if he could be of help in any way. He truly gives so much without thinking of taking. Thank you for being you, Michael! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you are interested in volunteering with their Long Island Chapter, you can fill out the Chapter Volunteer Application at www.twilightwish.org/volunteeropportunities/ and someone will get in contact with you regarding how you can do so. In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.

Rhonda Klch is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity First, which was formed in 2004. This organization provides financial education, literacy and best practices to the community at low or no cost. Financial decisions are based on emotional scenarios, often times leading to clients making poor choices and decisions in regards to their future. Equity First creates and implements an approved client plan until the desired result is achieved. Their programs include money management, budget reviews, financial well check, credit restoration, debt settlement, bankruptcy consulting, loss mitigation services and more. Each service is paired with ongoing consultations to ensure a thorough understanding of timelines, expectations and benchmarks. Rhonda and her team are making an incredible impact in the Long Island community. In addition to financially assisting others, during the pandemic they have also given locals in need food, gift cards, personal hygiene products and more.

Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. Her passion for horses and teaching began at a very young age. In college, she was the captain of the equestrian team and she graduated with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

Stand Out Musicians Honored Farmingdale High School continues to fill its halls with note. Three stand-out seniors have been selected for the sweet musical notes created by its talented musicians. prestigious All-Eastern Music Honors Ensembles. Recipients And this year, the District wasn’t the only one who took include Aidan Kelly, Cooper Malanowski, and Gabriella Sferlazza. Throughout their musical career, they’ve had the opportunity to perform with other quality high school musicians all along the Northeast coast. “The music department at Farmingdale High School is so proud of our three All-Eastern musicians,” said Mr. Greg Warnokowski, Director of Fine Arts. “This is an honor that comes after an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to their music studies, and Aidan, Cooper, and Gabriella should be very proud of their accomplishments. They can consider themselves as three of the best high school musicians on the east coast!” Cooper Malanowski was selected to perform with the Jazz Band. Aidan Kelly was chosen as a vocalist with the Mixed Chorus and Gabriella Sferlazza with the Treble Chorus. All three musicians performed in the fall with the All-State STAND OUT MUSICIANS HONORED - Honor Ensembles. Kelly and Sferlazza were selected as Farmingdale High School musicians selected for All- alternates for the All-National Honors Ensembles. “I have known these students since sixth grade,” said Ms. Eastern Honors Ensembles. They make Farmingdale so proud!” Farmingdale teachers who sponsored the musical efforts include Ms. Jessica Mischke, Chorus Director, and Ms. Gina Pellettiere, High School Band Director, along with proud high school music staff members Mr. Matthew DeMasi and Ms. Barbara Lieberman. “I am so proud of the students for representing the Farmingdale Music Department,” said Ms. Gina Pellettiere, High School Band Director. “They are hard-working, talented, and certainly deserve the honor of being part of the highly competitive All-Eastern Ensembles. This year, they have overcome many obstacles and continue to make music an important part of their lives.” The All-Eastern Honor Ensembles will come together for a “Virtual Weekend” March 4-6. The event will include keynote speakers, masterclasses with professional musicians, and college networking opportunities. This year, students will individually record their All-Eastern Ensemble performance from home, led by a conductor virtually. The recordings will be edited together to produce a concert performance like no other, set to premiere on April 23 at the 57th NAfME Eastern Division Virtual In-Service Conference.
