The Farmingdale School District presented its 2017-2018 proposed budget to the community at the Board of Education’s first special meeting/ budget workshop on March 15th, 2017. During the meeting, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business Paul Defendini highlighted the District’s forward-thinking and fiscally responsible budget planning for the 2017-2018 school year, and explained how the proposed budget helps ensure Farmingdale students continue to receive the best education on Long Island. Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all beneﬁt from

Music in Our Schools The Farmingdale School District recently celebrated the annual Music in Our Schools Month in several of the district’s schools as part of the District’s commitment to providing a high-quality music education program. At Northside Elementary School, under the direction of Mrs. Katie Duke, Band members prepared a musical piece that they performed in the front hallway as students entered the school each

morning in March. Band members enjoyed sharing their skill, while students and teachers enjoyed hearing the music and looking forward to see who will be performing each day and which instruments would be featured. Music in our Schools Month is a program sponsored by the National Association for Music Education. The event is intended to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all

children and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. Music teachers celebrate the month in many ways by offering special performances, lessons, sing-alongs and activities to bring their music programs to the forefront and display the positive beneﬁts that school music brings to students and the MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS - Farmingdale School District students in the Northside community.
