Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Nesting Bald Eagles Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy

preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,”

said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast coast. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from

ospreys. Ensuring that healthy fish populations – and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters is a top priority for The Conservancy. “Decades ago, protecting land was enough to ensure the survival and viability of our local wildlife, but today our efforts are concentrated on keeping the lands and especially the waters around Long Island clean and healthy,” said Nancy Kelley, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island. “It’s especially important that we do everything we can to avert threats –like nitrogen pollution in our waters –so that our majestic wildlife species can survive and thrive here.”

The Farmingdale School District presented its 20142015 proposed budget to the community at the Board of Education’s first budget workshop held on March 12th. The District’s proposed budget stays within the District’s tax levy limit of 1.81%, which was calculated with the formula provided by New York State. District administration and board trustees emphasized that the proposed budget was drafted to meet the community’s expectations, including maintaining most of the District’s academic and extracurricular programs. “The Farmingdale School District carefully crafted a comprehensive budget in order to maintain the highlevel resources that our students need to succeed in and out of the classroom,” said Paul Defendini, Farmingdale School District Assistant Superintendent for Business. “It is extremely important for our community to continue to be involved throughout this process because it is our goal to continue to provide our community with the academic and programmatic excellence that they deserve and have come to expect from our District.” The budget presentation included a detailed explanation of the property tax cap, the revenue needed to support District programs, services and facilities, how state aid is allocated and distributed, as well as the purpose of fund balances and reserves. Administration officials also reviewed proposed legislation recommended by Governor Cuomo and its potential impact on future District budgets. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect its schools. Eight Farmingdale High School students recently participated in a local St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser Head-Shaving event. The students joined in a collective effort to shave their heads while helping to raise funds for childhood cancer research.

The students received donation pledges from family, friends and community members to raise thousands of dollars. The students who participated in this year’s program were Michael Coakley, William Hroch, Nicholas Carbone, Frankie

Go Bald For A Cause Gillman, Aaron Tucker, Kyle Tucker, Matthew Lewis-Flood, and Nicholas Fiorentino. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to help fund research to find a cure for childhood cancer.

CELEBRATING SEUSS IN STYLE - Farmingdale School District Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School students recently celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The students celebrated the occasion by dressing up as various Dr. Seuss’ characters and reading his most famous stories, including The Cat In The Hat and Green Eggs And Ham. The students also participated in a variety of arts and crafts activities that were related to the famous children’s author.

Blood Drive Rescheduled The Town of Oyster Bay has rescheduled its semiannual Blood Drive to Thursday, April 24th. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to

accommodate other blood drives affected by the recent snow storms. Winter is traditionally a season when blood donations decrease while hospital and patient needs remain the same. The locations for the

blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department

of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and

76 or older with a doctor’s note dated within one year of donation), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. All blood types are needed, but O negative blood types are universal and especially

During Eastplain Elementary School’s Parents as Reading Partners celebration in the Plainedge School District, author Heather Hill Worthington visited with students. Ms. Worthington, author of Miles of Smiles: The Story of Roxey and the

Long Island Rail Road Dog, is a native Long Islander who was eager to share how she combined the facts with her imagination to construct the story. The children got to view authentic “Roxey” postcards and historic articles on the dog that

was featured in local newspapers. Following the assembly, students had an opportunity to create their own postcards. The school received an autographed copy of the book for inclusion in its library.
