THE FORTITUDE OF FARMINGDALE - Farmingdale High School Students build desk dividers to keep classrooms safe. Photo courtesy of The Farmingdale School District development workshops led by staff developers and building collegial circles with each other to learn and grow with best teaching practices. The Remote Learning Teacher Resource guide provided several tutorials for platforms such as Schoology, Google Meets, and Flipgrid to ensure teachers are proficient in using all platforms. Being engaged members of their classes has allowed students to bring their ideas to life. To fortify safety measures, the District administration worked around the clock, along with Farmingdale High School Technology Department and Maintenance, to design and produce desk divider reinforcements. Students chipped in as well! Mr. Sterler’s Wood Materials Processing Classes and Mr. Bilello’s Vocational Carpentry Classes processed over 40,000 linear feet of PVC material needed to provide the reinforcements for over 8,000 desks in the school district as part of the “Shield Project.” The additions to desk dividers

not only ensured the safety of both students and faculty but provided students with the chance to see their education meet the realworld application. From inside Woodward Parkway Elementary School, our teachers continue to provide students with engaging learning experiences, both in person and virtually! The integration of Schoology and virtual tutorials of how to use the innovative learning platform have prepared our youngest students for this particular chapter of their academic journey. Teachers are committed to providing moments of educational and social-emotional support— both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, morning meetings are being conducted for all students to cultivate a sense of community. Participating in this new morning ritual covers morning routines, what makes someone a hero. It recognizes the people in our lives that inspire us—a sense of normalcy is created for our remote students.

Thankfully covid-19 cases are declining in New York and throughout Long Island! Mid-March marks one year ago when the State went on pause due to the pandemic. We reﬂect on the past year as “a year like no other” as we progress towards brighter days. Good news; restaurants are able to operate at 75% capacity starting March 19th, other covid-19 restrictions are changing due to the decline in cases, visit www.governor. ny.gov for more details and updates. Farmingdale Village Hall has re-opened to the public and staff is in the Village office from Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. The Village Hall phone number is 516-2490093, and our website is www.farmingdalevillage. com. The Village received an update on the Route 109 paving projects. According to a project manager for the rehabilitation of Route 109 they anticipate starting the westbound side in mid-April and await a delivery of materials (sewer/drainage castings) from Nassau County DPW that have to be replaced. There are 58 locations westbound from the county line to the intersection of Conklin/109. This part of the project is very labor intensive and time consuming and is anticipated to take six weeks. The eastbound side has 11 locations where castings need to be repaired/replaced as well.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations

Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New

York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty

surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.

Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Patricia, who recently had her wish granted. You could be next! Patricia Bachmore is a 75 year old resident of Amityville. She wished for new furniture and thanks to the Long Island chapter of this national nonproﬁt, her wish was granted! Patricia has fostered and socialized rescue kittens and cats for years. Understandably, that took a toll on her furniture. Although the furniture was old and falling apart, she could not afford to replace it on her own because of her limited income. In December of 2020, The Twilight Wish Foundation granted her with a new sofa and kitchen chairs, which she wished for. In addition to her work with rescue organizations, Patricia is part of the Amityville neighborhood watch program and also works with the Town
