In a short time, Easter will be upon us and that means egg hunts, chocolate comas, those little marshmallow treats called Peeps, and tons of jelly beans. It is an exciting time because when we think of Easter we thing of spring. My personal favorite part of Easter and spring is the smell of a church fi lled with flowers, and my favorite flowers during Easter are the tulip and hyacinth. These flowers’ bright colors remind me of the brightly colored Easter eggs we used to hunt for as children, and those my own children now hunt. The bright colors have a warmth and happiness that dispels the gray and bleakness of winter. The radiant colors of these flowers also remind me of the brightness that Jesus brings into the darkness of our world during Easter. At Easter we celebrate the rising of Jesus from the darkness of the tomb. The contrast between the darkness of the tomb with the radiant light of the resurrection is striking. Easter comes and the giant stone is rolled away from the tomb, and the light of a blessed new morn penetrates that tomb and illuminates the darkness of death, of illness, of disease, of hatred and of humanity’s sin. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town is seeking counselors for its Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program. The six week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference. “This summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume. Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while making a difference in the lives of others,” said Supervisor Saladino. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 25th through August 10th. The March of Time “Most of us take for granted that time flies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with infinite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make
along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.
The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers
will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Swim-a-thon Set Every spring, young children, teens and adults alike are invited to take a dip for a worthy cause at NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Annual Swim-a-Thon. This fun-filled event, which raises vital funds for the Hospital’s Child Life Program, will take place on Sunday, April 22nd, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Hofstra University’s Swim Center. The Child Life Program is a pivotal component to the overall care of pediatric patients and their families at NYU Winthrop. Through the program, highly trained Certified Child
Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve patients’ understanding of medical procedures; teach relaxation techniques to help young patients cope with illness or surgery; and provide emotional support for the entire family. To date, the Swim-A-Thon has raised more than $400,000 to benefit the Child Life Program. The Swim-A-Thon was first conceptualized by Ron Marino, DO, Associate Chairman of Pediatrics at NYU Winthrop Hospital. Dr. Marino, an avid swimmer himself, wanted to come up with
a fundraiser that would connect a healthy physical activity with giving back to the Hospital and young patients he adores. Thanks to his passion to help, and the growing support of community members, local businesses and staff, the event has flourished each year. Dr. Marino is particularly excited about the community-driven support the event has generated for the benefit of young patients. “ C o m m u n i t y collaboration strengthens the fabric of community well-being. The annual Swim-A-Thon not only
supports the mission of the Hospital in so many ways, it also fosters the personal growth of all those who participate,” said Dr. Marino. Schools are invited to participate in groups, and community members are invited to swim or support a swimmer through a sponsorship pledge. In addition, students can earn community service hours by participating either as swimmers or as volunteers at the event. “There is no age requirement or limit – infants to senior citizens are all welcome!” added Dr.
Marino. Each year, the SwimA-thon is enhanced by an outpouring of support from community members who donate their time and services to make this a fun, family-centered event. Participants will enjoy swim coaching by Bryan Kurt from Open Water Swim LLC; massage therapy by Megan Iovino; live music by the Mineola High School Jazz Ensemble and Central Beat rock band; crafts provided by Cathy Grossfeld of All About Kids; yoga by Donna Dragani, and more. C. to celebrate Women’s History Month at the GFWC Washington headquarters. Through the efforts of President Tina Diamond and Congressman Peter King, they were able to take a tour of the White House and then attend a presentation at the GFWC headquarters given by Dr. Marjorie Spruill, a Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of South Carolina. She specializes in women’s and gender history and the history of the American South. Dr. Spruill discussed her most recent book, Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics. Divided We Stand focuses on the women’s movements of the 1970s, particularly the federally sponsored International Women’s Year (IWY) conferences of 1977, in which GFWC participated. Throughout this club year, Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) President Tina Diamond initiated a new fundraiser program to benefit the
humanitarian efforts of Fitness for Africa – Pearl of Hope School in Uganda founded by Heather Parisi, daughter of member Cheryl Parisi. The school continues to help bring education to children in areas where there are no schools. Ambassadors volunteered to hold monthly luncheons at local Farmingdale restaurants. As Heather says, “Even the smallest amount of money goes a long way to bring these children literacy, fitness and a chance for a better life.” WCF Ambassadors have continued through the New Year to set up an inexpensive lunch, which includes a small donation to this cause. At its February meeting, WCF members welcomed new member Vicki Impollonia. Vicki has been a long-time resident of Farmingdale, as well as just recently retired from the Farmingdale School District, where she worked for many years in the Adult Education Program. Vicki signed the WCF membership book which dates back to the club’s origin in 1913. Members wore red to support American Heart Month
while listening to Eileen Collette, EPIC House Director, speak about how much the residents of Epic House, who are physically and mentally disabled, appreciate the visits and baskets of goodies donated by members and distributed by the WCF at various holidays. The visits offer residents good socialization skills while lifting their spirits. At its March meeting, a Lemon Auction was organized by Bea Ferrari, where members found many great bargains while contributing to the club’s philanthropic endeavors. And on March 12th, the (GFWC) General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Island Metro District held its annual Cultural Arts Day at Delmonico’s Restaurant, hosted by the Junior League of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale. High School students and clubwomen from Long Island displayed their many arts and crafts pieces. First Place student winners received a monetary award from the Island Metro District, which the Women’s Club of Farmingdale then matched.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Department of Human Services Commissioner Madeline QuintyneMcConney recently hosted the Town’s 30th Annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. This year’s event was titled “African Americans in Times of War,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. Also in attendance were Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilmembers Jackie Gordon, Anthony Manetta and Terry McSweeney, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne
Gregory, Legislator Tom Donnelly and several other representatives. Averi Harper, a News 12 reporter and the host of “Diverse Long Island,” a magazine show focused on minority issues, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, the President of SUNY College at Old Westbury, delivered the keynote address for the event. The event honored 30 veterans from Long Island for their services in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Each veteran answered the call to action and put his or her life on the line overseas. In addition to these veterans,
three others who were killed in action were also recognized. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Wyandanch Memorial Post 361 and Martin A. Kessler Post 2912, as well as Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218 were honored for their commitment to serving veterans in the Babylon community. The invocation was delivered by First Sergeant Charles Chaney Sr., a retiree of the United States Army and current member of the Department of Defense. Chaney, a graduate of Amityville High School, was ordained in 1992.
Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) inducted eleven new members into the LIHSA chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M, a part of the National Association for Music Education, recognizes student musicians for their academic and musical achievements. Of the
eleven, five were appointed as top officers. Candidates for membership in Tri-M must meet a rigid set of eligibility requirements in several categories including participation, leadership, achievement, service and character. Tri-M members must maintain a grade point
average of 85 or higher, dedicate time to school and community service, and demonstrate exemplary character traits, such as respect, responsibility, dependability, fairness, caring and citizenship. The new officers of the LIHSA chapter of Tri-M are: President Abigail Flicker, Locust Valley CSD;
Spring Yoga Classes Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella announces that residents seeking a low impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held this April. Classes are open to individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town is proud to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these
yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” Councilman Muscarella said. “Yoga builds strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. Sign up today and use this opportunity to also meet new friends that can last a lifetime!” Starting Saturday, April 14th, yoga classes will be offered every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. The session is 10 weeks in length with a fee of $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. be subject to change and residents are encouraged to inquire about special holiday scheduling. If a session is cancelled due to inclement weather, a make-up session will be attempted. Mats will not be provided, so participants must bring their own Yoga mat. Participants should check with a physician before partaking in any physical fitness program. The Long Island Heart & Stroke Ball is an annual social event held to celebrate outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership in wellness. GSNC will once again offer a variety of activities for our Girl Scouts and their families to earn patches and prizes, all in an effort to promote healthy living. All
participating Girl Scouts will receive the Girls Go the Distance patch and will have the opportunity to earn additional patches based on designated activities they choose to participate in. “Girls Go the Distance is such a wonderful event our girls look forward to each year, and we’re excited this year it falls on Earth Day. This event is designed to encourage girls to be active outdoors in a setting that also promotes a healthy
lifestyle,” said Rande Bynum, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “There are many positive benefits of children and pre-teens being active. Our research shows that Girl Scouts are more likely to seek challenges, learn from setbacks, as well as develop and maintain healthy relationships. Family FunDay encourages families to be together and develop these leadership outcomes for their girls. ”
This year, the girls and their families will have an opportunity to explore the village and work together to solve mind bending challenges.
