I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.” I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion. She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a

was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years. Brenna had lived to the age of 32. I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family. Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.” I miss you friend.

couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna. She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across

The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!

Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19. There a many ways the public can get involved with Birthday Wishes of Long Island! One way is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington, located at 414 New York Ave. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and food tastings. Additionally, Birthday Wishes is looking for people to volunteer their time as drivers or party coordinators. Please visit their website at www.longisland.birthdaywishes.org for volunteer position descriptions and fill out their volunteer application if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer! Lastly, being that they rely heavily on donations of toys from
generous donors like you to throw a birthday party, they are always looking for more of these donations.
As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Therefore, please make sure your donations are brand new only! Below is a list of gift items that they are seeking:
FITNESS FUNDRAISER - A fundraising competition for The Children’s Heart Foundation, hosted by Total Body Boot Camp, consisted of 3 minutes maximum repetitions for both bench presses (95 lbs) and dead lifts (135 lbs). Both competitors put on an amazing show. Spectators donated $10 at the door to watch, and ultimately the competition was a tie. However, the real winner was the Children’s Heart Foundation. Local merchants donated items that were raffled off and over $600 was raised in the 50/50 raffle alone since the winner generously donated her entire pot to the foundation. Members and spectators brought in extra donations by getting their own sponsors and completing a 10 minute workout with various body weight exercises. Participants gained donations per rep completed. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: The Mercy Inn ~ Wyandanch The Mercy Inn is a wonderful soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one every leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. BATTLE FOR CHILDREN’S HEART HEALTH - On February 2nd, Total Body Boot Camp held a fundraiser at its newest Farmingdale location at 208 Route 109. It was called the “Super Brawl,” an homage to the Super Bowl. The event was a battle between the oldest and youngest trainers at the gym. Farmingdale Goes to Albany On February 26, 2019, twenty-six members of Farmingdale’s Legislative Action Committee traveled to the New York State Capitol in Albany to present their 2018-2019 legislative proposals and to discuss the impact of pending and future legislation on public schools. The committee— students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and members of the board of education— took a guided tour of the Capitol and saw the chambers where their state government convenes. Fourteen high school students were selected for the trip—determined by teachers Jim Hughes and Jennifer Theo—based on the courses and clubs they participate in. Students knocked on the doors of more than 15 legislative offices to lobby for the
urgent need for predictable and equitable school funding, safety in our schools, and more support for the needs of a shifting student population. The students met with Assemblyman Lipetri and Assemblyman Mikulin, and had impromptu hallway meetings with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Assemblyman Steve Stern. They shared with their representatives what it means to be a Daler, and how important it is for them to get a well-rounded education. Throughout the day, Board of Education members Kathy Lively, Suzanne D’Amico, and Anthony Giordano were on hand to help students articulate their advocacy efforts. “The ride there and back was full of laughs, important dialogue on
future direction, and most importantly a continued recognition and gratitude for the wonderful school and community we serve,” said Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development Dr. William Brennan. This was Dr. Brennan’s first year leading the committee. “It was an incredible opportunity for our students to see firsthand how government works and how laws are developed and implemented. Students came to understand that laws have a direct impact on school funding, and ultimately their education. It was heartwarming for us to see them in action, speaking with such pride about Farmingdale. They were an inspiration for everyone on this trip.”
