There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

This year’s Long Island Builder’s Institute Builders Expo will truly be a home show. The show, the only expo on Long Island that attracts the pros, this year will feature some of Long Island’s biggest homebuilders who will exhibit their newest projects – both for sale and rentals. The show takes place March 26th, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island, 598 Broadhollow Rd., Melville. Sponsored by the Islandia-based Long Island Builders Institute’s (LIBI), the show is open to the public and the trade. Admission is free to the show and for five public seminars. This year marks the show’s 24th year. A seminar on energy efficiency envelopes for building and real estate industry professionals offering CEU credits is limited to the trade and will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of this seminar is $40, which includes lunch. “This year’s expo is designed to introduce residents of Long Island to our local homebuilding and contracting community in a manner that will strengthen confidence in working relationships and in knowing the best contractors on Long Island are the ones who are on the job,” said Lois, Fricke, director of operations at LIBI, the region’s homebuilders trade group. Among the developers offering the public a first chance to see their new projects are Avalon Bay Communities, which has apartment communities under development is several Long Island communities; Engel Burman Group, which is planning a 55-plus community in Seaford and new assisted living facilities in Lake Grove and Farmingville; and Tritec Real Estate Co., which is constructing the New Village at Patchogue luxury apartments as well as

Peter Macchia of Farmingdale High School has been named a Distinguished Teacher of 2014 by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “Our awards recognize teachers who spend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, year after year,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Treasurer and Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Dedicated teachers like Mr. Macchia inspire students to dream, to work to accomplish those dreams, and to think rigorously about what they want their future to be.” One of a dozen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award

Harvard Club Honoree Mr. Macchia, who teaches Research Science and AP Environmental Science, has been teaching at Farmingdale High School since 2003. He serves as an advisor for the Farmingdale High School Varsity Leaders’ Club and coaches the National Science Bowl Team, the Regional Quiz Bowl Team, Varsity Tennis and other school teams. Mr. Macchia also coordinates the school’s participation in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) established at Farmingdale State College. High school students receive academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for entry into collegelevel programs in Science, Engineering, Technology, Health Services and licensed professions. Mr. Macchia is a resident of Shirley and has received citations from the Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County, as well as a commendation from Farmingdale State College. He was also awarded a special Farmingdale School District award, “Opening up Scientific Worlds.” “My ability to help students enjoy learning and as a result have great success as academics is something I am very proud of accomplishing year after year,” said Mr. Macchia. “Leading by example as a lifelong learner… expanding and going beyond the curriculum to sometimes learn together, is another way I provide a valuable environment for my students and help them become better learners as we pursue knowledge as a team,” he continued. Nominated by Nakul Gupta, a former Farmingdale High School student who will graduate from Harvard College in June, 2017, Mr. Macchia was described as “truly

one in a billion,” said Mr. Gupta. “Mr Macchia taught me to love learning. He taught by example. In class, we got through the material and had time to learn about cool, current biological research. His enthusiasm for science was so transparent that it changed me. I have come to realize that Mr. Macchia makes students great.” At the ceremony on March 29th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2014 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling some of the resources available to Harvard students. They have met with faculty; visited research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoyed visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. “We are proud to honor these teachers, whose efforts enable our Long Island students to thrive at top universities and to be upstanding citizens,” said Susan M. Novick, Harvard Club of Long Island President. When Superintendent of Schools John Lorentz learned of this award, he commented on the “many excellent teachers at Farmingdale High School,” adding “it is an honor for one of our own educators and role models to be recognized by such distinguished leaders of higher education. Mr. Peter Macchia has a strong reputation for actively engaging students every day, and holds them to highest standards both in his classroom and within our community. We are extremely proud of Mr. Macchia and his

accomplishments.” This year’s fourteen Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach biology, chemistry, earth science, English, government, history, math, science research, and social studies. The winners teach in the Baldwin, East Meadow, Farmingdale, Herricks, Island Trees, Lindenhurst, Manhasset, Massapequa, and Syosset school districts, as well as the Long Island School for the Gifted, the North Shore Hebrew Academy, St. Anthony’s High School, and The Stony Brook School. Previous winners from Farmingdale High School include James Hughes who was awarded the Distinguished Teachers

Award in 2008. This year, Harvard College received 34,295 applications nationally for the Class of 2018 (597 from Long Island) and will accept slightly more than 2,000. Over the past 20 years, Harvard has accepted students from more than two-thirds of the approximately 150 public, private, parochial, and charter high schools on Long Island, according to Carolyn Hughes, who chairs the Harvard Club of Long Island’s Schools & Scholarships Committee, which ensures every Long Island applicant to Harvard gets a personal alumni interview. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. In celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Kids of Distinction program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) -

$2,000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor.

The Kids Helping Kids academic scholarships greatly help students fund their college education and related expenses and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young

residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” In addition, Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. is inviting several past Kids of Distinction scholarship recipients to attend the 2014 ‘Kids of Distinction’ scholarship ceremony in what they are calling What are they doing now? Spring Programs

WOWED BY WIZARDS - King Arthur from the Harlem Wizards basketball team recently visited each of the elementary schools in the Plainedge School District. In an effort to promote the district’s Staff vs. Wizards basketball fundraiser game on March 27th, he spoke to all the students about the history of the team and got the kids excited for the event by performing some of the team’s best moves. Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Badminton or Adult CoEd Volleyball Programs, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The volleyball program starts on Saturday, April 5th and will be conducted on Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The badminton program starts on Thursday, April 10th and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are

12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount. “Badminton and volleyball are both excellent forms of aerobic exercise, which can help promote multiple health benefits and longevity,” Councilman Pinto said. “Along with positive health benefits, I would encourage people to join these coed activities for the social aspect as well.” Councilman Pinto noted that registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, March 25th
