The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

FHS Competition Cheer Team Wins State Championship The Farmingdale High School varsity cheerleading competition team won the New York State Championship title this past weekend—capturing the Division I Large School title. The team is the first Nassau County cheerleading team to ever win a state championship title in cheerleading. This was the second year that Farmingdale competed at the varsity level and the third year that competitive cheerleading has been a part of the Farmingdale athletic program. The competition was

held at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. The girls went through two rounds of competition, competing in a preliminary round against eleven other teams in the morning, then moving into the finals with a third place standing before taking the win. “We are so over the moon excited!” said coach Caitlin Weinsheimer. “Going into the competition this weekend, we set a goal for ourselves to make it to finals. Once we accomplished that we knew that our final performance would be the last time we

would take the mat together as a team. The girls gave it everything they had—they left their hearts and souls on the mat. We didn’t know what the outcome would be, but we knew we gave it our absolute best and we won! Two students from Weldon E. Howitt Middle School have each been honored with 2020 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. For her self-portrait, Lost in Thought, Olivia Potts received the prestigious Silver Key award in the Drawing and Illustration category. Matthew Holding received an Honorable Mention for Excellence in Art for his self-portrait in the Drawing and Illustration

Category. Olivia is enrolled in Ms. Ginexi’s Studio Art class, and Matthew is in Ms. Byers’ Studio Art class. “We are very proud of our students, who work tirelessly to become better at their craft,” said Ms. Ginexi. “A lot goes into the act of creation that most people don’t see. Taking something from an abstract idea and being able to execute that concept, to bring to fruition a concrete product that demonstrates the knowledge that they’ve gained through the learning process is

elemental. It’s nice to have our students’ hard work acknowledged.” The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. Since their founding in 1923, the awards have established an amazing track record for identifying the early promise of our nation’s most accomplished and prolific creative leaders.

Honesty, Kindness, Respect—just a few of the words now colorfully gracing the steps of the east building bridge at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School. They were painted on by seventh grade student Sammi Klein (with help from fellow friends and classmates Juliana Regina and Daniella Alessandro) as part of her quest to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award. She chose bright colors and positive words to give all students who climb the steps an inspiring daily affirmation. Middle school can be hard, and Sammi thought this could help bring a smile to anyone who needs it.

At the top of the staircase, eighth-grader Alexa Frontino painted a colorful wall mural with the words, “Mistakes are proof that you’re trying.” She too is working toward the Girl Scout Silver Award and was helped by fellow classmates Ryan Sweeney, Maialee Bernas, and Melissa Gavarrete. The girls painted their projects over the winter break so it wouldn’t interfere with the school day. They chose the locations with Principal Pena, who gave them a few options inside Howitt that could use some sprucing up. The Girl Scout Silver

Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn and there are many steps on the journey to receive it. A fundamental part is demonstrating leadership, hence the inclusion of other students in which to lead the project. Dressed in their Girl Scouts uniforms, the girls presented their projects alongside Superintendent Paul Defendini at the March Farmingdale Board of Education meeting as part of his report on Farmingdale School District’s ongoing beautification projects.

Junior Receives Rising Star Award Farmingdale High School Junior Anthony Diaz was recently presented the Rising Star Award by representatives of the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs. He was given the award during a brief ceremony in Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson’s office. Executive Director Amy Flores and Administrative Aide Estefany Ruiz presented Anthony with his award, which was given in recognition of his emerging leadership, curricular accomplishments, and noteworthy contributions to the Dominican community. It was intended that he be given the award at a recent Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs

Dominican Independence Day Celebration, but he was unable to attend due to an academic commitment. “In honor of Dominican Independence Day, Nassau County celebrates the achievements and contributions DominicanAmericans have made to Nassau County,” said Executive Director of Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs Amy Flores. “Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs are proud to recognize Anthony Diaz as our Rising Star honoree. This award is given to Latino youth who are emerging leaders within the community who exemplify

leadership and noteworthy accomplishments. Anthony has an impressive 4.0 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, is the Track & Field 3200 Nassau County Class A County Champion, a two-time cross-country Nassau Class A State Qualifier, a Winter Track 3200m Nassau Class A County Champion, and the Long Island Record Holder for the 3000m USATF.
