Councilman Laura Maier announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place through April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. Several young Farmingdale artists entered this year’s PTA Reflections program. The theme of the 2021-2022 school year was “I Will Change the World By.....”. Students expressed their creativity in categories such as photography, visual arts, music composition, film production, dance choreography, and literature. Fifteen students from the Farmingdale School District advanced to the Nassau Region level of judging. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade twelve create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50 plus year-old program helps students explore their thoughts, feelings, and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning to help them become more successful in school and life.

Farmingdale High School junior Madison Sosnowski received an Award of Excellence from the Farmingdale HS PTA. Her photography entry “Ain’t Life Grand” advanced to the NY State level of judging. Awards of Merit were given to Farmingdale High School junior Kiley Cacace for her photography entry “Creative Vision” and freshman Samara Fuentes Mayorca for her visual arts entry “I Will Change the World by Being Human.” Seven Howitt Middle School students received Awards of Merit in several different categories. Both sixth-graders, Evan Moscoso and Emily Farrell, were honored in the literature (special artist category). Photography winners were Elizabeth Hilton, sixth-grade, and Chloe Corrigan seventh-grade. Eighthgrader Daniel Hilton was

celebrated in the literature category, sixth-graders Jasmine Koppel and Madison Douglas won in the visual arts category. Students from Albany Avenue Elementary were also honored. Third-grader Mya Corrigan, Secondgrader Juliet Ortiz, and fifth-grader Sophia Ortiz all received Awards of Merit in the visual arts category. Woodward Parkway Elementary second-grade students Tyler Dankowitz and Francesca Boyle each received Awards of Merit in literature and photography. PTA is the oldest and largest child advocacy association in America. Today’s PTA is comprised of more than four million parents, teachers, grandparents, caregivers, foster parents, and other caring adults who share a commitment to improving the education, health, and safety of all children.

likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national

pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilman Lou Imbroto and the Town’s Highway and Planning & Development officials, as well as local neighbors, to commence the demolition of a long-dilapidated zombie home in the South Farmingdale community. This longtime eyesore was recently court-granted for demolition following multiple complaints from local neighbors. “This property has had a lack of maintenance, multiple violations, and complaints from neighbors,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Over and over, Town personnel found deplorable conditions at this location with each passing inspection. This property showed clear

signs of neglect, and it became more and more evident that this dwelling was falling into great disrepair.” Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration of walls and roofing, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. With the property owner not fulfilling most opportunities to clean it up, the Town Quality of Life Task Force stepped in to help residents. “While the condition of this property worsened over time, the Town continued all efforts to keep the property maintained, in general acceptable

appearance, and of course safe to the surrounding neighborhood,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than two dozen homes since its inception.” The Code Enforcement Bureau of the Department of Planning and Development is charged with the enforcement of all codes, rules and regulations pertaining to zoning, housing and public safety. It is expressly designed to handle requests of citizens regarding possible violations. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20.

Every March, the American Red Cross honors and celebrates the everyday heroes who help fulfill our humanitarian mission during Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross help communities in their own countries and across the globe every day. The Red Cross is perhaps most visible in the aftermath of natural disasters. However, the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross are active year-round, and there are plenty of ways for individuals to contribute to both organizations throughout the year. • Receive training from the Red Cross. The Red Cross notes that many professions require individuals to master lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. Dalers Assemble! Farmingdale School District hosted Genre Con on March 5, 2022. Genre Con is a celebration of art, literature, and pop culture organized by the school’s library staff. The day was packed with author visits, writers workshops, drawing lessons, contests, and photo ops. “I am so excited to bring Genre Con back for the fourth time,” said Howitt Middle School librarian Julie Ehrenpreis. “We are thrilled to provide a fun-filled event for our students. Now, more than ever, our students need something engaging to participate in.” Genre Con, usually held at Howitt Middle School, was so well received that Farmingdale High School got in on the fun this year and had their first-ever Genre Con event as well. School librarians Julie

Ehrenpreis and Jennifer Bleicher organized Genre Con at their buildings with help from staff and student volunteers. “Genre Con 2022 at the High School was a tremendous success,” said Farmingdale High School librarian Jennifer Bleicher. “Genre Con provided a great opportunity for students to socialize and have fun. Our special guests inspired our aspiring student authors and artists. The support from SEPTA and the Farmingdale community was wonderful. I feel blessed to work in such a great town!” Farmingdale students who participated in Genre Con were treated to several engaging activities. There were scavenger hunts, costume contests, light writing, and photo ops with Darth Vader, Tusken Raiders, and Troopers from the 501st Legion.

A popular activity at Howitt Middle School was manga lessons from comic artist Misako Rocks. Manga is a style of drawing, originally from Japan, used in comic books and graphic novels. Students practiced manga drawing while Misako Rocks guided them and answered questions. Farmingdale High School students also had the opportunity to workshop with several authors. Dark fantasy, horror author, and Farmingdale Alumnus Trevor Firetog appeared at the high school and spoke with students about his writing journey. Backroom Comics, a group of talented writers and artists who also happen to be Farmingdale alumni, met with students and workshopped how to write well-rounded characters.
