Farmingdale School District recently sent 121 of their top student musicians to this year’s All County Music Festival. It was held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, and hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. The festival brings music students together from schools throughout Nassau County. In order to be considered for participation in All County, student musicians must perform at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Adjudication Festival, and be nominated by their music teachers. A committee of Nassau County music educators make the final selection of which students will perform in the various groups. There are 5 divisions - broken down by grade level - and Farmingdale music students participated in the categories of Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Vocal

Safe Boating Sessions Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to take advantage of a new Boating Safety Seminar offered in late March at local Town Community Centers. The seminar is being offered by the Department of Public Safety Bay Constable Unit, and will include topics related to safe operation, regulations,
responsibilities of boat ownership and operation. The seminar is free for Town residents. Supervisor Saladino stated, “This Boating Safety Seminar offers participants the fundamentals of safe boating operations. The course is recommended for all boaters and required by New York State for all personal watercraft operators.” Too many people
take their boats out onto the water without proper preparation,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The boating safety tips offered at this course can help save lives by ensuring boaters are properly prepared before they leave the dock.” Participants can choose between one eight-hour session and two four-hour sessions. · Session 1 will be offered from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on
Tuesday, March 20th and Monday, March 26th. Both classes must be attended in Session 1, which will be held at the Hicksville Community Center. · Session 2 will be offered on Saturday, March 24th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center. “History has shown us that too many people take their boats out onto the waters without proper
preparation and training to,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The tips offered at this Boating Safety Seminar can help save lives by ensuring boaters are properly prepared before they leave the dock.” Participants must be a minimum of 10 years old to participate in the seminar. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand today announced the Town will be hosting free blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol screenings throughout 2018 at community centers across the Town of Oyster Bay, and will be done in conjunction with Saint Francis Hospital. “The Town is proud to partner with Saint Francis Hospital through their Community Outreach Van program, and help provide this important

The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly
impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the
point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

Councilman Thomas P. Hand invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes, which return this April. The spring fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. “These fitness programs provide a terrific form of aerobic exercise that builds strength as well as increases general flexibility,” said Councilman Hand. “Zumba, Yoga and Pilates are very popular programs that give residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people.” Zumba classes will hold two sessions. Residents can choose one session, either Mondays (starting Monday, April 9th from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday April 11th from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.). Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) recently kicked off at Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School this week with the passing of the Olympic torch. Principal Patricia O’Regan accompanied student representatives from each class through the hallways, as they passed a torch to one another. Meanwhile, down the road at Woodward Parkway Elementary School, it was the closing ceremony for their PARP program;
the highly anticipated Principals’ Pie-in-theFace. Two lucky students - picked via lottery from children with the most tweets of themselves reading - got to smash a whipped cream pie into Principal, Patrick Klocek and Assistant Principal, Jennifer DeHayes laughing faces. Before the smash, Principal Klocek assured with a chuckle that the girls “would still graduate,” despite the fact that they were about to
cream their principals. A video was posted later in the afternoon so the entire school could watch the hilarity. PARP is a statewide literacy initiative in which students read with their family members for at least 15 minutes per day. The purpose is to encourage a love of reading and strengthen communication skills. The Farmingdale School District participates in PARP as part of its mission to build childhood literacy and help students develop a love of reading. The program can vary in length - from two weeks to six or more - and the timeframe is decided by each individual school. PARP was originally developed in 1978 by New York Senator, James Donovan, and is currently administered by the NYS PTA. Originally named Parents As Reading Partners, it was changed to Pick A Reading Partner in 2015 to be more inclusive of all caregivers.

as their favorite Dr. Seuss character, from several classics including “The Cat in the Hat,” and “The Lorax.”

Awareness Lectures With the recent tragedy in Parkland, FL still touching our hearts and in our minds, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town Department of Public Safety – in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department – will host two Situational Awareness Lectures for residents to recognize potential warning signs and learn proactive survival strategies during active shooter incidents. Lectures will take place on Thursday, March 8th at
7pm at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay, and on Thursday, March 22nd at 7pm in the community center at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. Residents are welcome to attend either seminar. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Terrible tragedies throughout our nation have left residents feeling very uneasy. While we all hope to never face such an active shooter situation, residents can take this opportunity to learn survival strategies and recognize potential warning signs of violent
individuals. The safety of our children and residents is of utmost concern and working with the Nassau County Police Department we will continue to advance education and preparedness measures.” By focusing on situational awareness, the 90 minute lecture encourages participants to be vigilant for suspicious behavior which could be indicators of a future attack. The curriculum discusses pre-operational surveillance, acquisition of bomb making materials, the importance of reporting
suspicious persons, packages and vehicles and other indicators of terrorism. Instructors will also present information on the “See Something Say Something” campaign and stress the importance of Suspicious Activity Reporting through contact with local law enforcement agencies. Ultimately the lecture builds toward providing participants with actions to take when confronted with an active shooter situation. During training, instructors will provide a historical review of national active shooter
