Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato today announced two additional Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops will be offered for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2021-2022 property tax assessments. The deadline to challenge the assessment on your home was recently extended to Thursday, April 2nd. The free workshops will be held on:

• Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm at Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. This seminar is offered in partnership with County Legislator Josh Lafazan and the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission. • Wednesday, March 25th at 2pm at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street in Hicksville. This seminar is offered in partnership with

County Legislator Rose Walker and Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The workshop is open to residents from both the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be

lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend one of these Property Tax Assessment Workshops, as the property tax grievance deadline of April 2nd is approaching.” In January 2020, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s new

tentative assessed value for the 2021/2022 school tax period and the 2022 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty. com or contact their local County legislator. At the workshops, an assessment expert will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” online or via mail. There is no

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

Farmingdale High School Celebrates Black History Month The first-ever Black History Month Program— sponsored by the R.E.A.L. Harmony Club was held on the evening of Wednesday, February 26, 2020 in the auditorium of Farmingdale High School. The program was an opportunity for students to recognize and celebrate the central role that black Americans have played in the history of the United States. The program included student performances in a variety of artistic mediums, including: music, song, skits, dance, and poetry readings. The Steppin’ Dalers also performed one of their routines. The finale was performed by Raniyah Elguerouat, Makai Jones,

Tania Gomez, Matthew Murrell, Deja Prewitt Hailey Batista, Isabell Bitsimis, Girannah JeanLouis, and Joe Magazzo, who sang “I Know Where I’ve Been” from the musical Hairspray. The evening was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of black Americans. “The members of R.E.A.L. Harmony brought voice and recognition to facets of our history that tell the stories of struggle and success,” said Director of Social Studies Samantha Black. “The R.E.A.L. Harmony Club was so excited to bring this program to Farmingdale High School as part of our

overall vision to promote multicultural awareness within the school and the community,” said teacher and club advisor Esther Hernandez-Kramer. She and teacher Josseline Morales have served as advisors since the club began last year. The goal of the R.E.A.L. Harmony club is to promote ethnic and multicultural awareness and diversity at Farmingdale High School. The R.E.A.L. stands for Respect—Education— Awareness—Love. Young Farmingdale Students Become Honorary Superintendents for a Day Last December, at the Dalers Deck the Halls Holiday Breakfast at Farmingdale High School, a fourth-grade Albany Avenue student named Anthony dropped every single one of his raffle tickets into the bucket for a chance to win the prize of being Honorary Superintendent of Farmingdale Schools for a day. He didn’t win, but his twin brother Jake—who ironically dropped in only one raffle ticket—did, and graciously agreed to share his win with his brother. On Wednesday, February 26, 2020—dressed to kill, with Daler pawprints on their ties and freshly minted ID badges—Jake and Anthony began their day as many local people do—at the Farmingdale Starbucks. After meeting up with Superintendent Paul Defendini, they accompanied him for a day

of typical duties, beginning at Farmingdale High School and continuing to Albany Avenue and Woodward Parkway Elementary Schools. The highlight of their day? “When we got to pull the alarm for a fire drill!” said Anthony. “Yeah,” agreed Jake. “That was the most fun thing we did today.” The pair lunched at Palmers Restaurant, where they attended a Farmingdale Rotary Meeting aside Superintendent Defendini. The boys were warmly received by the gathering and were inducted as “members for a day” by Rotary President Len Constantinopoli. Following lunch, the boys accompanied Mr. Defendini back to his office at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School, where they got to see some fun

artifacts from the district, including a ledger dating back to 1892 that was used to record teacher salaries, and an antique bowl and spoons that were unearthed during recent construction. Both boys were drawn to a protectively encased baseball, placed prominently on a table. “That ball was used to throw out the first pitch at the new Howitt Athletic Field,” explained Superintendent Defendini. “The day was a great success and gave the young Dalers firsthand knowledge of what really goes into running a school district,” said Superintendent Defendini. “I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Jake and Anthony. They were so attentive and interested and I wouldn’t be surprised if some day one of them earned their way into my position!”
