The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

The PACT project is funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (SAMHSACSAP) to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance use and its related problems among persons aged 9-20. This initiative collaborates with state and federally funded community coalitions including the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) at Farmingdale State College, Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) and the Massapequa Takes

Action Coalition (MTAC). Partners include the Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge Public School Districts as well as the Long Island Prevention Resource Center, Nassau County Police Department, New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Working together, we seek to understand patterns of substance use to better address this challenge through targeted prevention, education and outreach. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announced that the Department of Planning and Development has opened a new walkup window to its Town Hall South location to safely assist residents with building permit applications. Residents can access the new space, available in the front parking lot at Town Hall South in Massapequa, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. “Are you thinking about a new swimming pools, fence, solar panels, a generator or upgrading your home? Planning experts are available to assist you with various building procedures,

including the permit process,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our Town has ensured that services remain available to residents since the beginning of the pandemic, with our staff always being available even when our buildings have remained closed. We have worked to ease the permit process for residents, recently opening a new walk-up service at Town Hall North, and now at Town Hall South to allow for those looking to file their paperwork.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development’s new walk-up service is available at Town Hall South, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa (at the front of

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Councilman Tom Hand announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry

in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilman Hand. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The

Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate

donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilman Hand. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an

afterthought. Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman

Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted

MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ARMOR - To mark the anniversary of the end of the deadly Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War, Bishop Barrington Goldson of Calvary Tabernacle of Hempstead offered prayers at the Museum of American Armor where he was joined by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, former Congressman Peter King, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Vietnam veterans and living historians. The 1968 Tet Offensive marked a strategic turning point in the Vietnam conflict for while the Communists lost tens of thousands of soldiers in a failed attempt to take and hold key centers across South Vietnam the attacks were a severe psychological blow to the American public. The end of the offensive saw the beginning of America’s eventual disengagement from the war.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at a polar plunge benefitting the Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at TOBAY Beach. The event, which will include an extensive list of new COVID-19 safety protocols, will feature pre-assigned time slots beginning at 9:30 a.m. “Many of our residents are used to seeing beautiful TOBAY Beach in the middle of the summer, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to begin the beach season early,” said Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly waters of TOBAY Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.” The safety of participants

is of the highest priority for both Special Olympics and the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s plunge will include comprehensive safety measures that will comply with federal and state guidelines. Instead of large groups, each team will have a personalized polar plunge experience in a controlled safe environment. All spectators and volunteers will be required to wear masks and plungers will wear masks until plunge time. Signage and announcements will also serve as a reminder to maintain social distance and adhere to all safety protocols. All funds raised at the event support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Proceeds will help to provide year-round sports training and competition in over 22 Olympic-style
