he Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently hosted a Book Bingo event, as students played games that incorporated some of their favorite books. The night helped students enhance their vocabulary and reading skills with help from their families and teachers. Dr. Flescher uses four models to help the reader understand the concepts of moral evil: the presence of badness, the presence of goodness, the absence of badness, and the absence of goodness, which he explores in the first four chapters. In the fifth and final chapter, Dr. Flescher explores evil as inaction and the achievement of

moral betterment to help overcome evil. Accepting Applications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. In

celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Kids of Distinction program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The ‘Kids of Distinction’ program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we

have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. To date Kids Helping Kids has distributed $48,500 in academic scholarships to help these students fund their college education and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees

can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to nominate a student should fill out a nominating form

and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc., prior to the May 16th 2014 deadline. Nominating forms can be obtained at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), as well as at local TOB libraries and schools. (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would

be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise. 3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with

children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house. 4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Money Management 101 (NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially independent. • Teens are unsure about

their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent

Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category

at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also

known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation

Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a

A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often

referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.
