Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and ﬂowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netﬂix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

The Town of Babylon Department of Human Services recently presented “Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memory” in celebration of Black History Month. The event honored several members of the community and featured a keynote address by Suffolk County District Court Judge Derrick Robinson. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer was joined by Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town

Clerk Carol Quirk, and Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey in congratulating the honorees. Retiree Honored

After a decade working as a clerk typist/ administrative assistant in the Farmingdale Village Building Department, Diane Correri is retiring. During her tenure, Diane was the backbone of the Building department, working along with Joann Edling, the building inspector, Steve Fellman, Superintendent of Buildings and Brian Harty, Village Administrator/ Clerk, while also providing

administrative support to Mayor Ralph Ekstrand and the Board of Trustees. Her work also included title search documentation for abstract companies, maintaining building department files, drafting notices of violation, preparing legal notices and assisting homeowners with procedural guidelines to attend the Architectural Review Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. She interfaced with

the public, residents, businesses and contractors, usually their first stop; explaining requirements, fees, zoning information and fielded numerous questions and addressed concerns. “Diane adroitly handled permit applications from intake through issuance of Certificate of Occupancy, for: building permits, demolition, fence, plumbing, road opening, sidewalk, and sign permits, said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand”, She is extremely diligent and efficient, with a great demeanor, we value her work ethic and celebrated her tenure by naming February 16th, 2016 “Diane Correri Day” in the Village of Farmingdale. “On behalf of the Board of trustees and all of us at Farmingdale Village we genuinely thank Diane Correri for a decade of excellent service and wish Diane and her family a lifetime of health and happiness as she retires.
