Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

When the call came for volunteers to help residents of Puerto Rico recover from earthquakes that continue to shake the island nation, two mental health professionals from Catholic Health Services (CHS) quickly raised their hands. Yamith Soacha and Karen Camargo were among a team assembled by the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) and sent to Puerto Rico to provide mental health services. Strong earthquakes along the island’s southern coast caused extensive property damage and aftershocks continue. Soacha, a resident of Ronkonkoma, is a clinical social worker for CHS’s Good Shepherd Hospice. Camargo, a Farmingdale resident, is a licensed master’s social worker at CHS’s Mercy Medical Center. They were in Puerto Rico from February 3 to February 10 as part of the GNYHA team. During their time in Puerto Rico, Soacha and Camargo visited several communities including
Guyanilla, Guanica and Ponce where they spoke with residents and provided information about available services. They listened to locals and provided mental health tips to help earthquake survivors cope with the difficult situation they face. “There are many people who are afraid to be in their homes,” said Soacha. “They are unsure when the next earthquake will happen, how strong it will be and if their house will collapse with them inside.” As families work to repair the homes, the damage caused by the earthquakes is having a major impact on local children. Damaged schools have been closed for more than a month and many students are now with their families living in tents at recovery camps. “With schools destroyed it has led to feelings of anxiety and depression among many students,” Camargo said. Soacha and Camargo felt compelled to volunteer after seeing the struggles Puerto Rico residents have had in recovering from natural disasters
such as earthquakes and hurricanes. “As someone who is Hispanic I felt obligated to help,” Soacha explained. “It was also a chance as a human being to step up and provide assistance to those in need.” Camargo added, “As an educated Hispanic woman born and raised in the United States, I felt it was my duty to assist the communities in need in Puerto Rico. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive

Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store. Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves. Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying. Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices. 1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package. The AND recommends that consumers compare the portion size they actually eat to the serving size listed on the label. Some people may consume more than one serving size per meal, and that can affect just how much of each ingredient,
including ingredients like sodium that can be harmful if consumed in excess, a person is eating. 2. Pay attention to calorie count Nutrition labels contain calorie counts, which can help people maintain healthy weights. Being at a healthy weight has been linked to a reduced risk for various conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nutrition labels list calories per serving, so people trying limit their calorie intake to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight should pay particular attention to this information. 3. Let percent daily values guide you The AND notes that percent daily values, which are listed as “DV” on food labels, help consumers determine how particular
foods fit into their daily meal plans. These values are based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, though some people may need more or fewer calories than that. In addition, some people may need more than the 100 percent recommended daily value of a given nutrient. Consumers should discuss their specific needs regarding calorie and nutrient intake with their physicians. For those advised to heed the daily values recommendations, ingredients that are listed at 5 percent DV or less are considered low, while those that are 20 percent DV or higher are considered high. The AND recommends aiming low for ingredients like sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol, while high in vitamins, minerals and fiber can be beneficial. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame Is Now Accepting Applications The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2020 School Recognition Program. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways. “We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham. “We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to
support and promote music education on Long Island.” Applications will be reviewed by a panel of music educators some whom have been recognized by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as “Educators of Note.” High Schools will be given designations of Gold with Distinction, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Emerging. Application categories included program details, inclusion of standards, faculty, as well as community and board support.
