The agency will be partnering with CEPR to transform data usage in education to improve teacher, student and school achievement.

On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore. The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers. March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness Month. Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America. The Town of Oyster Bay will host the large school division of the New York State Club School Hockey Tournament – sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) from Friday, February 28th through Sunday March 2nd, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Some of the best high school teams from throughout New York State will come to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, for this prestigious tournament. The admission/donation for the event will be $10 for adults for the day or $15 for the weekend. Students with school ID will be $5 and children under 12 are Free. “Ice Hockey, throughout Long Island and New York State, is continuing to grow in popularity, producing accomplished players who have gone on to compete at very high levels,” Supervisor Venditto said. ““Here is a unique opportunity for the entire family to enjoy top tier action on the ice and catch the rising stars. Don’t be surprised to see some of these players

one day competing in the National Hockey League.” Steve Rupp, President of the Nassau County High School Hockey League, said he was looking forward to the upcoming tournament. “It’s great for the game,” Rupp said. “Many areas from throughout New York State, including Long Island, are proud of their local hockey programs and this tournament gives teams from across New York the excitement of competing for the state crown. In addition, our players in Nassau County are looking forward to playing at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, which is among the finest rinks in the country. Many Nassau County players are proud to call this rink their home and are eager to defend their home ice.” Massapequa High School and Syosset High School are among the local teams slated to compete. Two years ago, Massapequa High School won this tournament. Supervisor Venditto said the tournament will have a special atmosphere. “We have a lot of respect for the traditions of hockey in New

York State,” he said. “I am pleased to help facilitate these championship games, which will surely create lasting memories for the players.” Supervisor Venditto said the New York State Club Hockey Tournament will also serve as a fine example for the Town’s young hockey players in attendance, who can one day aspire to compete against the best. “The game will feature terrific role models for our young hockey players,” said Supervisor Venditto. “It will be a great weekend of hockey and we’re pleased to have it right here in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Golf Course To Open Soon The Town of Oyster Bay’s Golf Course will soon be ready for another season of play. “Depending upon the weather, our outstanding facility is expected to be ready for play by March 18th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Golf membership registration will start on Wednesday, February 26th at the golf course and there will be no fee increases for the 2014 season.” With the Town holding the line on fees, Councilman Macagnone said patrons will be treated to an outstanding experience and value. “Our members are all aware that rates at surrounding golf courses have been steadily increasing, while rates at the Town’s course will remain the same,” Councilman Macagnone said. “With its challenging, yet very playable holes and its pastoral setting on the grounds of a former estate, the Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful, championship golf course in Woodbury ranks among the most popular municipal courses on Long Island.” By registering, seasonal members will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the amenities that the Town of Oyster Bay’s renowned 18hole par 70 championship golf course has to offer. Annual membership fees, daily green fees, gas carts and tee time reservation fees will all be the same as last year. “With

the cold weather months still upon us, playing a round of golf seems a long way off,” Councilman Macagnone said. “In reality, the season is right around the corner.” Fees are posted on the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown. com. ECO-TEST - After learning about the 247 “superfund” cleanup sites contaminated with hazardous chemicals across Long Island, students in the Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES decided to take action. The young scientists conducted testing for heavy metal contaminants in our local ecosystem including lead, arsenic and mercury. Students went out in the field to take coastal samples from Caumsett State Park, to compare with samples from a superfund site 10 miles away in Glen Cove. They prepared and tested the samples at Brookhaven National Laboratory, conducing x-ray fluorescence tests using the lab’s state-of-the-art Synchrotron Light Source. To present their findings, the students created scientific posters.
