And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life
should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. The Farmingdale School District announced that 24 Farmingdale High School business students won the recent DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Regional competition held at Freeport High School. These qualifying students now have the next challenge of the New York State DECA Competition, which will be held from March 8th through March 10th in Rochester, New York. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students. They conducted themselves as true professionals and were rewarded accordingly for their hard work,” said Assistant Superintendent Glen Zakian. “Farmingdale students consistently set the bar higher and higher with
each passing year in all areas of education, and we are confident our students will be great ambassadors for our school district at the state-level competition. We wish them the all the best in Rochester.” DECA is an international, student-centered leadership organization comprised of high school students, college students and marketing, management, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, and sales teachers. Through the DECA program students learn the vocational understanding necessary to compete in marketing, management, business and merchandising careers while still in school. With the guidance of Farmingdale advisers, students are prepared to be future leaders and entrepreneurs in careers such as marketing, finance, hospitality, management, and other business areas. Teaming Up The Farmingdale High School Parent-Teacher Association recently hosted an informative program on bullying featuring the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB). This program was part of a Districtwide initiative to eradicate cyberbullying and help inform parents and the community about how to recognize early warning signs.
During the presentation, LICAB Community Workshop Coordinator Laura Campbell and Executive Director Joe Salamone spoke extensively on how bullying has changed in the digital age, how to talk with a child suspected as being bullied and steps to take to find a resolution to the situation. Cyberbullying
encompasses online harassment through texting, gaming and posting to social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, with posting of bullying videos online. Parents were able to discuss cyberbullying directly with experts and learn how to prevent their child from becoming a victim or perpetrator.

Students to Perform
The Farmingdale School District announced today that 122 Farmingdale students were recently selected to perform in the prestigious All County Music Festival held at Tilles Center. This is the largest group of Farmingdale students ever selected to perform. “As part of the District’s dedication to providing a rigorous curriculum in the arts, the District offers a variety of advanced instruction in many forms of music,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “Farmingdale students’ selection to perform in this event is a testament to both the Farmingdale education and these students incredible talent.” Students were chosen based on their scores in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Adjudication Festival and by teacher recommendations.
Farmingdale teachers nominated students who were subsequently chosen in several divisions including Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Vocal Jazz, and Jazz Band. In addition to being selected for the All County Music Festival, several students also received individual honors as well. In Division II Chorus, Jenna Hammelman sang in a solo group. In Division IV Band, Alexander Felker was Principal Trombone and Jessica Finkel was Principal French Horn. In Division V Orchestra, Abigail Grote was Principal Bassoon and Giovanni Maraboli was Principal Tuba. In Vocal Jazz, Sooji Kang performed a solo. “Students and teachers from throughout the District came together in an inspiring way to collaborate towards this event, learning how to accomplish their goals through teamwork and dedication,” said

The Men’s Softball Night League will feature
10 regular season games (two games per night once a week). The fee for registration is $650 per team plus an umpire fee of $830 per team, making the total registration fee $1,480. Long Island’s Got Talent Attention Long Island students! Can you carry a tune?Is a musical instrument your specialty? If so, get your audition DVD or YouTube video submitted now for Long Island’s Got Talent 2017, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO). Created by WMHO’s Youth Corps, the event gives Long Island students the opportunity to show off their talents this spring. It’s open to students 10-17
years of age in Nassau or Suffolk County who must still be in high school at the time awards are given in November 2017. Talent must be non-professional vocal or musical instrument performances. The entry deadline is March 17th and there is a $25 entry fee. Those who are contacted after submitting their audition will be asked to perform at the first round performance on April 7th at 6:30 p.m. at
