Snow Days & Days Gone By Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.
“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems
that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

The Town of Oyster Bay welcomed a new Town Supervisor with the installation of Joseph S. Saladino as the 60th Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay. Supervisor Saladino, a 13 year member of the New York State Assembly, served in the 9th Assembly District, where he worked to protect the local economy, ease taxpayer burdens and preserve the environment. “I am thrilled to come home and get to work on rebuilding this beautiful Town,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Today we begin anew, to return Town government to a path that it followed for so many years; a path that made Oyster Bay a model of fiscally conservative leadership and which has provided residents with an unparalleled suburban quality of life.”
Supervisor Saladino noted he will spend the coming weeks and months working on outlining his goals for the new Town administration. “I will work to gain the faith and trust of our residents, by providing transparency and improving efficiency, as well as looking to provide affordability and fiscal integrity.” In his new role, the Supervisor will use his over 30 years of experience as a government administrator, including the last 13 serving as an Assemblyman, during which time he pushed for government reform, tax reduction, and consolidation of state government. During his years in the Assembly, Supervisor Saladino worked to deliver on-time state budgets, bring ethics reform, cut spending and worked to eliminate a
$10 billion deficit in the State budget. Additionally, Supervisor Saladino is known throughout the State for leading the charge to remediate the Grumman Navy Plume to clean up the contaminants in Long Island’s drinking water. “We will save money. We will make Town government live within its means, while continuing to deliver top notch municipal services, the kind of services Town of Oyster Bay residents have come to expect,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Working together, we can move Oyster Bay in a new direction and build a proud future, a future built on the foundation of the highest standard of ethics, strong hands-on management and rock solid fiscal practices. We will put the residents and taxpayers first.”
