Albany Avenue Elementary School Hosts Its First Multicultural Night Albany Avenue Elementary School held its first Multicultural Night, a school-wide celebration of students’ culture, on January 25, 2024. The cafeteria was transformed into a World Showcase, featuring an array of cultural displays that took attendees on a journey

around the world. This exciting event, organized by teachers Mrs. Jillian Jimenez and Mrs. Emily DiSanto, aimed to create an environment where everyone felt welcome and valued. “We aimed to create an event that would enable students and their families

to discover and appreciate the various cultures in our school community,” said Third Grade teacher Emily DiSanto. “We hope students learned new languages and customs, played games and activities, and tried delicious food!” The school cafeteria was adorned with decorative

tables, each featuring the heritage of a different culture. Poster boards were filled with information about various cultures, and families dressed in traditional clothing proudly shared their holiday traditions, sports, and games. Flags, artwork, and artifacts were on display, and

the event was accompanied by traditional music and spoken languages. The night’s highlight was the extensive international spread of traditional dishes. The event was a great success as students and their families enjoyed learning about each other’s cultures while savoring the

Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation Welcomes 2023 Hall Of Fame Class The Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation, a chapter of USA Lacrosse, welcomed 11 players and coaches into its 2023 hall of fame class during the 38th annual ceremony held on Saturday, January 27. Among the inductees were two family members, James C. Metzger and Rob Pannell. Metzger, a standout player at Half Hollow Hills High School East and Hofstra University, also was recognized for his mentorship and as a Long Island lacrosse benefactor. His nephew is a former award-winning college player who has continued to set records and win awards with the MLL New York Lizards and PLL California Redwoods. Pannell also participated on three USA National Teams. Special awards were bestowed on Ed Wallace and Rosalia Gioia. The foundation’s mission is to share the positive spirit of lacrosse and support the highest ethical standards for all participants through annual initiatives that include targeted grants, scholarship programs, lacrosse educational clinics and events that raise awareness and resources to support the game. It collaborates with Nassau and Suffolk counties, and Metro New York, to improve the game. The organization’s board consists of men and women who coach and/or volunteer with teams from youth to post-collegiate levels, along with referees, umpires, organizers, managers, parents, supporters and others dedicated to lacrosse. Saladino Announces Youth Vocational Training Program Youth Ages 16-24 Invited To Apply Today Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is partnering with United Way of Long Island to launch YouthBuild, a program designed to help young adults between the ages 16 and 24 learn vocational skills that will lead to meaningful employment and success. YouthBuild participants split their time between the vocational training work site and the classroom, where they can earn their high school diploma or equivalency degree, and prepare for postsecondary training opportunities including college, apprenticeships, and employment. “I’m very proud to

announce that the Town of Oyster Bay will be partnering with United Way of Long Island to provide this extraordinary opportunity for young individuals, who may have faced previous barriers to success, to attain an education that will lead to gainful employment within our communities,” said Supervisor Saladino. “YouthBuild not only offers vocational programs for in demand industries such as construction, health care, information technology, and hospitality, but it also includes community service and civic engagement so students may share their valuable

Town Receives Highest Award For Excellence In Financial Reporting Government Recognized For Spirit Of Full Disclosure In Producing Identifiable Budget Surpluses And Deficit Eliminations Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The recognition, awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The Town was praised for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2022. “This award represents a significant accomplishment by our Town and the way we have managed our finances,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Since taking office, my administration has eliminated $44 million in deficits inherited from the prior administration while producing budget surpluses and earning 8 credit rating upgrades from Wall Street – all while cutting property taxes and repaving more roads than ever before! We’re proud to earn this recognition and will continue practicing fiscal restraint to protect taxpayers.” In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized annual comprehensive financial report. This report must satisfy both generally accepted accounting principles

and applicable legal requirements. The Town’s financial report is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the GFOA program, which includes demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report. The GFOA, founded in 1906, represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada deeply involved in planning, financing and implementing thousands of governmental operations in each of their jurisdictions. GFOA’s mission is to advance excellence in public finance.
