Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Farmingdale School District sent 101 of their top student musicians to the 2020 Nassau Music Educators Association (NMEA) All County Music Festival—held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on multiple days in January. The festival brings music students together from schools throughout
Nassau County. To qualify for participation, students must perform at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Adjudication Festival and be nominated by their music teachers. A committee of Nassau County music educators make the final selection
of which students will perform in the various groups. The Farmingdale students performed in 5 different divisions— broken down by grade level—in the categories of Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Vocal Jazz, and Jazz Band.
Lifeguard Employment Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season. “We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Town lifeguards provide an invaluable service and have helped save countless
lives.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight
gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do
Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.
