Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Embracing Differences At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Schaffer joined with his colleagues on the board to unanimously approve a resolution proclaiming the month of April as “Upper Limb Difference Month” to show support for families of children who were born with missing hands, fingers or arms. This resolution was passed to show encouragement for the efforts of “Unlimbited Possibilities,” an

organization that provides support and resources to families of children with upper limb differences. Members of the organization were in attendance for the meeting to celebrate the unanimous passage of the declaration. Unlimbited Possibilities is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 2003 and was the first upper limb difference organization on Long Island. The organization was founded by parents of children with

upper limb differences with the purpose of coming together to offer support, share information and raise awareness about the issues that these families face. Since their inception, Unlimbited Possibilities has held numerous community events, raffles and auctions for their cause. In April, they will be hosting their first ever walk-a-thon in the Town of Babylon.

LIJSL Convention Even though New York looks like a winter wonderland with all the snow, the Spring Season of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is scheduled to begin in five weeks. Journeying Into History Fourth grade students from Farmingdale School District’s Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently participated in an inschool field trip to learn about the history of Native Americans.

The interactive program, titled “Journey Into American Indian Territory,” taught the students about the lifestyles of Native Americans through storytelling, participation in Native American games, and the study of Native

American arts, crafts, songs and dance. The program is designed to help students have fun while learning the history of Native Americans and their role in American history.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined with Town Clerk Carol Quirk to induct the Town of Babylon Youth Court’s Class of 2015. The Youth Court oath was administered by Deputy Supervisor Martinez to the new inductees in attendance. The Town of Babylon Youth Court serves to reduce juvenile delinquency through positive peer influence

and allows first time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Youth Court is made up of students between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week training program. ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers

who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

Potholes Pack A Powerful Punch (NAPSI)—Hitting a pothole can be more than a momentary jolt. While the tires and wheels should be visually inspected as soon as possible, you should know there could be damage to the steering, suspension and alignment systems that you can’t see. To help determine if hitting a pothole has damaged your vehicle, watch for these warning signs: • Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or bouncing excessively on rough roads. These indicate that key safetyrelated systems—the steering and suspension— may have been damaged. They largely determine your car’s ride and handling. Key components are shocks and struts, the steering knuckle, ball

joints, the steering rack or box, bearings, seals and hub units, and tie rod ends. • Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and uneven tire wear. These mean an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for safe handling and longlasting tires. • Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls, or dents in the rim. These problems should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road. “If you’ve hit a pothole and suspect that there may be damage to the tires, wheels, steering and suspension, or wheel alignment,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council,

“it’s worth having a professional technician check out the car and make any necessary repairs.” As a general rule of thumb, he advises, steering and suspension systems should be checked at least once a year and wheels should be aligned at the same interval. Motorists who drive in areas where potholes are common should be prepared to have these systems checked more frequently. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work

per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. The average monthly health cost of a migraine sufferer is 60 percent higher than that of people who don’t suffer from migraines, according to the National Institutes of Health.
