20 rounds before firstplace winner Anthony Piliero took the medal with the word “swollen.” Runner-up was fellow fifthgrader Patrick Flaherty. The bee was hosted by teacher Deana Puidokas. Anthony will now compete

at Hofstra University in March against top spellers from across Long Island for a chance at national consideration.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2015-2016 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues into February with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town. The Distinguished Artists Concert Series is one of the Town’s most popular programs and runs now through May 2016. Youth Court Induction Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Town Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to induct the newest members of the Town of Babylon Youth Court. The Youth Court oath was administered by Supervisor Schaffer to the new inductees in attendance. The goal of the Youth Court

is to reduce juvenile delinquency through positive peer influence while allowing first time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Town of Babylon Youth Court Class of 2016 consists of 22 members between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week program. The members of the Town of Babylon Youth

Spring Workshop Registration The Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community and Youth Services will be offering exciting workshops to residents for the Spring 2016 season, and registration for all applications is open from now until February 26th, Councilman Joseph G. Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn to Skate this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. “The Ice Skating Center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year. This winter season is an ideal time for newcomers to learn how to ice skate or for veteran skaters to strengthen their abilities. Registration for Series 4

(March 5th through April 29th) is available at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The Learn to Skate program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

Farmingdale Baseball League is committed to providing quality instruction in the development of baseball/softball skills, sportsmanship, competitiveness and fair play.

Residents are invited to send in their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. According to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, the current winter season presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. Many Town publications, including the recently mailed 2016 Town Calendar, feature great photos submitted by our residents. Anybody who has taken photos depicting people or places within the Town of Oyster Bay is invited to submit those photos for potential use in upcoming Town publications. The Town accepts photos throughout the year for use in various Town publications. Seasonal photos are especially encouraged, as they are used on the Town’s website and also considered for the following year’s Town calendar, which is

mailed to all residents. The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at mkane@oysterbay-ny. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771.
