Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we
see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken
them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. “I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

Careers in Healthcare The eighth-grade class at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School received some valuable face time with local health care professionals at the school’s first-ever Healthcare Career Fair. The program, hosted by the Howitt Middle School Guidance Department in conjunction with Northwell Health, introduced students to the variety of paths available to them in the field of health care. Presenters from Plainview and Syosset Hospitals engaged students in break-out conversations to answer questions and describe their particular specialty. Students learned
what skills and education were necessary for each field, and what a typical work day might entail. The fair was a complement to the career exploration curriculum, encouraging students to start thinking about class options that await them in high school. Beginning in February, eighth-graders and their families will meet with counselors to discuss their four-year plan of study. “Our goal was to help students start to think about whether the health care field is in their future.” said Maureen Moloughney, Director of Guidance and Social Work
for Farmingdale School District. Students often choose their future pathways in middle school, which is why the Farmingdale School District asked Northwell Health to add Howitt Middle School to their calendar of workshops. Normally, this type of program is reserved for internship level students. The Howitt career fair was the first time Northwell Health has presented to a middle school audience, and the students found it very helpful to learn how relevant their coursework is in preparing for their future careers.

Business Leaders Honored The students and educators of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech recently honored more than 100 local business leaders at the annual Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch. The event is an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty and staff to thank these invaluable mentors for their ongoing guidance and support. Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island
businesses, giving students the significant advantage of on-the-job work experience under the supervision of industry specialists. The school’s industry partners help students to develop the skills necessary to compete in the workplace. In addition to providing real-world experience, industry partners regularly visit classrooms to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about
their respective businesses. At the brunch, industry partners were honored by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials and community leaders. They were given a red carpet welcome by Barry Tech student ambassadors, and awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions. They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M.
Barry Career & Technical Education Center. But the day’s most important business was the collaboration between industry partners, faculty and guidance counselors to improve instruction. The business leaders offered their input on new curriculum to ensure that it is up to date with the most current industry standards. “Our industry partners are crucial to the success
of our students,” says Work Experience Teacher Coordinator Randi O’Moore. “They share their experiences in the field, inform our students’ education with their expertise and help them to hone their skills.
