Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) took part in a Master Class led by guest artist, Roxanne Lyst of Philandanco, the Philadelphia Dance Company. Lyst spent the day teaching students modern dance, adding in her company’s signature action-packed moves, during a visit made possible through a sponsorship by the Tilles Center for the
Performing Arts. LIHSA dance student, Wendy Cherry from Baldwin UFSD, expressed the importance of learning in a Master Class setting. “Every teacher has their own different technique; everyone might be dancing from one style, but they have their own way of incorporating themselves into it to make it their own.” The dance program at LIHSA admits students by audition. Those accepted
spend half a school day training in ballet, technique, modern, jazz and physical theatre. “These dance students have a hunger and desire to perform, to learn and be creative,” said LIHSA Dance teacher Dina Denis. “We have many students who have gone on to higher education or conservatory training, as well as students who have gone right into the profession on Broadway or in traveling companies.”

The Eve Of Excitement? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,
don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching
the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

As always, contact your child’s teacher with specific questions. “The great thing about Common Core and the way teachers will now be assessing students is that there is a big-picture goal in mind,” says Huntington. “This creates a perfect opportunity to notice your child’s strengths and progress, while keeping an eye on areas to work on.”

Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards.

When your child brings home his or her mid-year report card, it is important to read it carefully and take note of a number of key areas. And with the Common Core State Standards going into effect this school year, Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center reminds parents that report cards may look different this year than in years past. “The report card format may change from last year, as states roll out report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards,” says Huntington. As you evaluate your child’s report card this month, keep in mind the following: Understanding the report card format is critical. Four Hempstead High School students were awarded $2,500 college scholarships Wednesday by the North ShoreLIJ Health System in recognition of their academic achievements and community service as part of North ShoreLIJ’s commemorations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the health system announced today. Mayelin Hernandez and Karen Beatriz Lopez are students of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, which works to increase diversity in the health-care field. The young women created the Future Doctors Club of America at their high school with the help of mentors Stephen Barone, MD, and Nancy Palumbo, MD, pediatric physicians at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Ms. Hernandez anticipates studying either biology or chemistry in college and Ms. Lopez expects to study chemistry. The two other students presented the scholarships Wednesday at the ceremony at North ShoreLIJ’s corporate office in Great Neck were Kadeem Brown and Aaron-Michael Rines, both members of the Hempstead Select Chorale,
Voices of Virtue. Mr. Brown anticipates studying social work in college while Mr. Rines expects to study business and finance. These two young men sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for North ShoreLIJ staff at the event, one of North Shore-LIJ’s Dr. King commemorations. The Hempstead Select Chorale is internationally recognized and has performed the last two years at North Shore-LIJ’s Dr. King commemoration at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. “We wanted to provide something tangible to these deserving students,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. In addition to the high school students who received scholarships, four students were recognized for their essays about Dr. King’s message about the importance of service. Each of these students has a parent who works at North Shore-LIJ. Vishal John won the contest with his essay about service through sacrifice as it relates to military personnel, health system employees and other role models. Other honorees recognized for their essays were: Camylin Blake, Zara
Baig and Ryan Cleere. Mr. John received an iPad mini for winning the contest, Ms. Blake got an iPod Nano and Ms. Baig and Mr. Cleere each received $50 gift cards to Barnes & Noble. To honor Dr. King’s legacy of service, 27 North Shore-LIJ facilities participated in a food drive for Island Harvest and City Harvest. More than 10,000 pounds of food were donated to Island Harvest, which will impact about 8,000 people, Island Harvest CEO Randi Dresner said. Ms. Dresner applauded North ShoreLIJ for not only feeding so many people through its donations but also raising awareness about hunger on Long Island with its food drive.

If you’ve been considering adopting a dog or cat, I strongly suggest a visit to the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter, a stateof-the-art animal facility built to house both dogs and cats in a healthy and nurturing environment
while they await adoption. “Residents can obtain an informative brochure entitled Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter, which provides an overview of the shelter, a schedule of adoption fees, licensing fees for dogs and fees for redeeming lost dogs and cats,” the Councilman continued. “It is a good reference tool for anyone considering adopting from the Town’s Animal Shelter.” Councilman Muscarella noted that any resident or organization interested in obtaining a free brochure can pick one up at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), the Department of Public Works (Syosset) and at

Winter Classic Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the LI Blues will host the Fourth Annual Winter Classic at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage on Saturday, February 8th, 2014. “The LI Blues is a hockey program that gives children and young adults with special needs the opportunity to play ice hockey in an accommodating setting,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Three other teams, the East Coast Jumbos, the New Jersey Dare Devils and the New Jersey Avalanche have been invited to the event and will be participating.” There will be four games played with the faceoff for the first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The event is expected to conclude around 7:30 p.m. Admission is FREE. “I’m very proud that the Town of Oyster Bay will once again be hosting this event at the renowned Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center
in Bethpage,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The LI Blues is a terrific program that brings all the fun of hockey to those with special needs. This event showcases the dedication of these young athletes who are quite skilled at hockey. They really are inspiring.” “The sport of ice hockey gives participants a sense of teamwork and instills important character traits such as dedication and resiliency,” said Michael Russo of LI Blues Special Hockey. “We are very proud of our program which brings ice hockey to these players at adaptive levels that makes it fun for all. Distinguished Artists Concerts The Town of Oyster Bay 2013-2014 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in February with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joe Pinto announced. “The Distinguished Artists Concert series has proven time and again to be one of the Town’s most popular programs. Common Core Presentation
Dr. Donald Murphy, director of Mathematics and Information Systems, Hauppauge School District, and Marc Licht, director of Technology, Mineola UFSD, presented the initial YouTube library of the Common Core Video Help Initiative Project (ccvidhelp) to more than 40 teachers and administrators representing 20 Long Island school districts on January 23rd in the Hauppauge School District Board of Education Room. ccvidhelp is a grass roots initiative created to provide students and parents with the support they need for Common Core mathematics in grades K through 9. ccvidhelp started organically through conversations between Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht
who recognized the desperate need among parents for Common Core math module resources (support) to help their children at home with the new math curriculum. While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org • Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other
Internet support resources. Multiple YouTube videos are currently available to help parents and children in their struggle with the Common Core curriculum. The initial video library was presented at the July 23rd meeting. “We provided an overview of the ccvidhelp initiative, outlining many of the details while providing demonstrations of the various technologies employed to create, edit and host the tutorial videos,” stated Dr. Murphy. “Attendees were very enthusiastic, and some signed up right away to join us in our efforts. Going forward, we will continue to build our video library with the goal of creating math videos that align to the Common Core Math Modules for Grades K-9 over time.”

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and
CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com.
The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
