Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host a free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2023-2024 property tax assessments. Reading is Snow Much Fun! Bookopoly! Reading S’more at Camp SEM! Reading is Our Superpower! The PTA selected these four exciting themes for this year’s Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) program at Farmingdale School District’s elementary schools. This month, Albany Avenue, Northside, Saltzman East Memorial, and Woodward Parkway Elementary launch their 2022 PARP program. This three-and-a-halfweek program is designed to engage and involve parents, caregivers, and other adults in fostering a child’s love of reading. Learning to read is the most critical activity in a

child’s education. Studies have shown that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. The goal of a PARP program is to encourage children to read with a partner every day. The PTA’s PARP committees at Farmingdale Elementary Schools prepared fun-filled weeks, including assemblies and family nights. Some of these special activities include dress like your favorite character day, ﬂashlight Fridays, snuggle up and read, book Bingo, living history museum, mystery masked readers, ﬂipgrid contests, design a bookmark, find a cozy spot to read, and hats off to

reading. Developed in 1978 by the late State Senator James Donovan, Chairman of the State Senate Education Committee, the PARP program asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily, emphasizing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills in the child and strengthens their relationship.

Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games Coming To Farmingdale

Save the date, May 21, 2022. The Long Island Region of Special Olympics New York is planning its Spring Games North after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Farmingdale Athletic Complex at Howitt Middle School is set to host the competition. “We are incredibly excited for the return of Spring Games, not only for the competition but also to be coming home to Farmingdale schools,” said Stacey Hengsterman, President and CEO of Special Olympics New York. “On behalf of the hundreds of athletes who will participate in Spring Games, thank you to Superintendent Defendini as well as the district faculty, coaches, and community volunteers who are making it possible.” The Spring Games anticipate having over 500 athletes, 150 coaches, and hundreds of spectators and volunteers. Howitt Middle

School will host events such as track and field and power-lifting. The brand new Aquatic Center at Howitt Middle School will host swimming events. The district is looking at potential locations to hold the tennis portion of the competition. “You can see a wide array of athleticism that is going to be there from highly-skilled and highlycompetitive athletes who can do incredible athletic feats,” said Farmingdale Superintendent Paul Defendini. “That athleticism gives me so much pride. We value our Special Education program in Farmingdale, and we respect the growth of our students at all levels. This is not only a great opportunity for us to get behind our students in that capacity, but it gives us pride in this complex that will be able to handle an event of this size.” Farmingdale School District will begin to reach out to those in the

community to help take part in this event, which will be held on May 21, 2022. Those interested can help in three ways. First will be through the volunteer effort of getting the facility ready leading up to the event and then helping clean up and get the facility back to normal. Second, the district will rely on local vendors to help establish the Olympic Village. Specifically, the district will be looking for vendors to provide games and workshops for people to participate in. Third, the Special Olympics will be looking for donations to help get the event running. “This is a massive volunteer effort,” said Defendini. “We’re going to need a tremendous amount of volunteers to get this event off the ground. Farmingdale is a great place for that. We’re the kind of community when help is needed - help is there.”

What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving

mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl

instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche.
