ALL ABOUT SPAY NEUTER 4209 Merrick Road, Massapequa • 516.799.CATS

Odds & Ends By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Make Proposals Special and Successful A marriage proposals is a couple’s first official step toward the altar. Tradition dictates that men pop the question, with their surprised - and hopefully soon-to-befiancées - ultimately deciding if wedding bells will be on the horizon. Proposing marriage can be nervewracking. However, if the time seems right and love is in the air, popping the question can be exciting. Regardless of who is proposing marriage, the following strategies can help make proposals memorable and successful:

Incorporate Flowers in Various Ways Weddings are special moments for couples and the guests they invite to share their happiness on their big days. Beautiful weddings require substantial planning, as every last detail must be considered for couples to enjoy the wedding of their dreams. Flowers play a big role in many weddings, and couples can add beauty and ambiance to the event by using floral arrangements in various ways. Modern floral arrangements are stunning, and many couples may not know that herbs, spices and flowers have been used in weddings for centuries. Today, flowers are used to decorate wedding venues, impart sweet fragrances and complement formal attire, but in ancient times they were used differently. Flowers were used to bestow good luck on the couple and keep bad omens away. Brides carried aromatic flowers and spices to keep evil spirits

from spoiling the festivities, and some even tucked bulbs of garlic into their bouquets. In ancient Greece and Rome, both the bride and groom wore garlands made out of strong-smelling herb flowers around their necks or heads. These wreaths were considered gifts of nature, and thus extremely appropriate for a wedding. Traditionally, bridesmaids would be responsible for fashioning these floral

components. In ancient Sweden, young girls would carry small bouquets of fragrant herbs down the aisle and the groom would put thyme in his pocket. These aromatics were thought to help keep trolls at bay. Besides warding off spirits or hungry trolls, flowers also served more practical purposes throughout history. During the Middle Ages, people bathed less frequently

than they do today. Bathing might only have occurred twice a year, once during summer and then again at Christmastime. Because many weddings took place in the spring, flowers were used to mask bodily odors. Not only were flowers and herbs carried, but they also would be sewn into clothing. Modern brides and grooms may no longer see their wedding days as times for opportunistic evil spirits. But that doesn’t mean that couples cannot borrow from ancient traditions and incorporate flowers into their weddings in various ways. Wreaths and Garlands: Ask the florist to weave small flower buds, berries and vines to a headband, wreath or piece of twine so that the bride and groom can wear these flowers in the way they were worn by ancient Greeks and Apart from bouquets, flowers can enhance weddings in several different Romans. When coupled ways and take their cue from historical traditions.

with Grecian-styled wedding gowns, brides can look like beautiful goddesses on their wedding days. Fragrant Favors: Tuck dried rose petals and other fragrant flowers into sachets that are embroidered with the wedding date and couple’s names. Guests can use these sachets to keep clothings smelling fresh in drawers or as subtle air fresheners around the house. Edible Flowers: Ask the caterer to make meals flowerfriendly by including some edible blooms in the salad or as a garnish on meals. Raining Petals: In lieu of bubbles or birdseed, guests can shower the newlyweds with rose petals after the ceremony. Memorial: Some couples like to honor departed family members. Floral arrangements with small placards can make for fitting memorials.

weddings more enjoyable, and may increase the propensity to enjoy a more successful marriage, couples must be practical and consider their wedding budgets when creating their guest lists. The average American wedding includes 120 guests, according to a 2015 Newlywed Survey released by WeddingWire. Couples who are finding it difficult to create and pare down their guest lists can employ the following tips. Create initial lists. When jotting down potential guests’ names, write down everyone you want to invite, regardless of budget. Then list the musthave guests for the wedding.

adults’, inviting children can significantly increase the guest list. A no-child policy at the reception can save money. Avoid uncomfortable situations. Unless you have remained particularly close, keep former boyfriends and girlfriends off of the guest list. Ask for an unbiased opinion. Give the editing pen to someone else if you cannot make a decision. This person may help weed out extraneous guests. Paring down a wedding guest list can be a difficult process, but couples should work together and respect each other’s concerns when creating their final list.

Tips for Trimming the Wedding Guest List Weddings are a time to celebrate, and many couples hope to invite as many people as possible to share their excitement. A 2014 study by researchers at the University of Denver found that couples who invite at least 150 guests to the wedding may have happier marriages. The study examined 418 people who were single at the beginning of the study and married five years later. It found that 47 percent of those people who had gotten married in front of at least 150 guests had “high-quality marriages,” while those with 50 or fewer guests fell short. While guests make

This should include the family and friends with whom you interact on a regular basis. Create a separate column for guests who don’t make the must-have list. Separate friends from friends’ friends. If you don’t see people outside of events set up by mutual friends, you should not feel obligated to invite those people to the wedding. They are more likely friends of your friends and not your close friends. Know the guest list ceiling. Catering halls or reception rooms often can only accommodate a certain number of people. Know this number before making a final list. The limits of the space

may serve as the catalyst for trimming the guest list. Consider coworkers carefully. Think about whether you’d still be friends with your coworkers if the company dissolved tomorrow. If not, you should not feel obligated to invite them. Have we met? If you don’t remember interacting with a person (your parent’s long lost friend from high school) or the person has never met your significant other, then they probably can be cut. If parents insist on inviting someone you barely remember, they should help defray the costs. Cut out the kids. Even though children’s dinner costs may be lower than

Determining Wedding Day Dress Codes Wedding invitations do more than merely announce that a celebration is on the horizon. Invitations provide key information about the ceremony and festivities to follow. Many details, including the location, time and date of the wedding, are spelled out on the wedding invitations. However, invitations can sometimes leave guests confused about the appropriate style of attire for the occasion. Even though wedding invitations rarely offer specific information regarding attire, chances are the wording will provide clues that can help guests interpret the desired dress code.

shirt for men. Women can wear a sundress or slacks or a skirt and an attractive blouse. If the invitation mentions beach casual, shorts and even sandals are likely acceptable. SEMIFORMAL Semiformal dresswear, sometimes referred to as “dressy casual,” is a step up from casual clothing. Cocktail dresses or a more elegant skirt and top are the norms. Gentleman generally wear a suit and tie. Coordinate the colors of clothing to the time of day. Fabrics should represent the season. For example, a linen suit will not pass at a winter wedding. the majority of weddings. When the invitation does not specify a dress code, it is safe to assume formal attire is expected. Men can choose among a dark suit and tie or a tuxedo. Women can opt for a formal cocktaillength dress, a classic suit or a long dress. Select among tones that are gray, black or brown. BLACK TIE Black tie events also require formal attire. Black tie typically goes hand-in-hand with an evening wedding. Black tie is more rigid for male guests, who should wear a tuxedo, black bow tie, cummerbund and patent leather shoes. Women have a little more leeway with their attire at such gatherings. A long evening gown might be preferable. However, a

WHITE TIE The most formal of occasions will request white tie attire. Ball gowns and tuxedoes with tails are the norm, as are dramatic jewelry and hairstyles. White tie attire is akin to what one might see worn to awards shows. When attending a wedding, it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Guests can consult with fellow guests or the bride and groom if they are unsure of the dress code.

Mardi Gras Dinner Dance Tradewinds, will foster new friendships, encourage financial support and spread awareness of our mission. Throughout the year we are dedicated to fulfilling wishes of deserving children, but wishes are getting more and more costly so we must double our efforts through events like Marty Gras to raise enough funds to keep our program strong and vital.

“Words cannot express how rewarding it is to see a child react with a big smile when he or she is told their wish will be granted. Whether it’s a computer, a bedroom make-over or meeting a celebrity, by granting wishes the Foundation creates extraordinary memories for every wish child and their loved ones. We want to grant wishes to as many children as possible so it’s

very important for us to have successful events like this one every year,” said Marty Lyons. Marty Lyons, a former NFL star for the New York Jets and a member of the legendary New York Sack Exchange, experienced three life-changing events that led him to establish a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to granting the wishes of seriously ill children. Competition Underway

Following the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Kick Off Event that was held at Stony Brook University on Saturday, January 7th, the FIRST Long Island build season is officially underway. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), the event hosted students, mentors and parents from 48 FIRST Long Island teams, who gathered in anticipation of learning the official rules for FIRST STEAMWORKSSM. Described by FIRST as a competition that “invites two adventurers’ clubs, in an era where steam power reigns, to prepare their airships for

a long-distance race,” FIRST STEAMWORKS is every part the ode to a time gone by. During the competition, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks in an effort to score points and win the round and eventually advance to eliminations and finals. As with all FIRST Robotics Competitions, FIRST STEAMWORKS will begin with a 15-second autonomous period, during which robots may only operate on preprogrammed instructions to complete one of three tasks and/or cross the baseline. During the remaining two minutes and 15 seconds, students will control the team robots to build steam

pressure, start rotors and prepare for flight. Detailed instructions for each of these tasks are available in the official FIRST STEAMWORKS Overview and a visual description can be found in this animated video from FIRST. As the theme of this year’s game, FIRST STEAMWORKS will be in full-force during the 2017 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition scheduled to take place at Hofstra University on March 31st and April 1st. For more information on SBPLI or the FIRST Robotics Competition program on Long Island, please visit www. firstlongisland.org.

Go Red Luncheon It’s that time of year again. Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 15th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The 2017 American Heart Association Go Red

For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s. Northwell Health is the Presenting Go Red For Women Sponsor. The American Heart Association’s 16th annual Go Red For Women Luncheon combines an elegant luncheon reception, silent auction, networking opportunities and moving survivor stories. The Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon will again feature educational breakout sessions presented by recognized and credentialed healthcare professionals, providing women with information, resources and hope to take action and live a longer, stronger life. This year’s Luncheon will honor Cary Carbonaro, Certified Financial Planner, Managing Director, United Capital and Joy Fernandez, Managing Partner, Ernst & Young, Long Island Office. Once again, the Community Honoree will be Premier Cardiology. The honorees are committed to raising support and creating awareness about heart disease and stroke especially, as it pertains to women. Antonia M. Donohue, Chair of Banking and Financial Services, Practice Group, Jaspan Schlesinger LLP,

LLP. is Chair of the Luncheon. Tamsen Fadal, PIX 11 News Emmy Award Winning News Anchor will emcee the event. Lisa Deck, National Go Red For Women Spokesperson will share her survivor story. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is attended by both women and men from business, health, education, local and state government. Local media sponsors include, PIX11. For information about sponsorship opportunities, ticket or table reservations, or other questions, call the American Heart Association at 516.962.0801 or visit longislandgoredluncheon. heart.org.

Did You Know? (NAPS) Symptoms of stroke include speech impairment, arm numbness and weakness, severe headache, sudden confusion, trouble seeing out of one or both eyes, as well as uncontrollable drooping of the face. The experts at Genentech say such signs mean you should call 9-1-1 immediately. Learn more at www.stroke.org.

Four Ways To Prepare Your House For The Cold

FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2017 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

(NAPSI)—You can be better able to keep your home cozy and comfortable when it’s cold outside when you consider these four tips: • Drain outdoor water sources: Before the next big freeze, make sure to drain all hoses, outdoor faucets and irrigation systems of any remaining water and cover exposed areas with some form of insulation. Leftover water can expand when it freezes, causing pipes to burst. • Clean your gutters: Branches, leaves and debris have likely been falling onto your roof and making a permanent home in your gutters. It’s important to keep gutters free of debris so water drains properly. Blocked gutters can create ice dams, letting water leak back into the house and cause roof damage. • Inspect the furnace: The last thing anyone

wants to deal with when colder weather arrives is the furnace not working. Get your furnace inspected every autumn to check functionality and efficiency. A proactive inspection also keeps you safe from allergens and excess levels of carbon monoxide. • Keep the heat inside: While one of the best ways to control the temperature inside your house is through insulation, more than 30 percent of the energy used to heat and cool a room depends on the windows. That’s why installing a window film, such as 3M Thinsulate Window Film Climate Control Series, can increase a window’s insulation value, so a single-pane window performs close to a double-pane and a doublepane close to a triple-pane. Another way to maximize energy efficiency

can be to install 3M Sun Control Window Film Prestige Series. It rejects 97 percent of infrared light and 99 percent or more of damaging UV rays. Learn More For further facts about window film or to find a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer nearby, visit www.3M.com/windowfilm.

Selling Your Home

Naturally Lowering Cholesterol

(NAPSA)-When selling your home, view it as a potential buyer and make improvements accordingly. Consult with a real estate professional to see if improvements are good investments. To learn more, visit American Home Shield at www. firsthomeresources.com

(NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk

may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription

alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea.
