Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. He prefers guests enter the wedding and have their senses stimulated by flowers from all angles. two-versus-two robot stacking challenge. Team VEXistential Crisis made it to the semifinals, finishing seventh out of thirty-eight teams. The tournament was a first for the Weldon E. Howitt Middle School Junior Dalers Robotics team, who, along with ten other middle schools, chose to compete at the high school game level. “They had the choice to compete in VEX IQ with other middle school teams, or VRC,” said middle school teacher and coach Jess Zanco. “They decided to challenge themselves. I was blown away by the work they put in to get there. They’re already hard at work on a new robot for our next competition, slated for February 1, 2020 at Freeport High School. I can’t wait to see what they create!” Robotics Team OverClock won the Farmingdale High School tournament, earning themselves a spot to compete at the 2020 Southern New York State VEX Championship Tournament, scheduled for March 7, 2020 at the Harvey School in Katonah, NY. Two of the Farmingdale

High School Robotics teams qualified previously for the championship. They will be joined by the Junior Dalers, who qualified by earning the Excellence Award during the Farmingdale competition. Farmingdale’s robotics teams have consistently qualified for the Southern NYS VEX Championship and have advanced to the world championship for the past five years. “We couldn’t do this without the extended Daler community,” said Ms. Grady. “Proceeds from our registration fees will be used to fund a trip to our next tournament at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, where our teams will work with and compete against teams from across the US and Canada.” VEX Robotics was created by The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation. Celebrating The Chinese New Year Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who

do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar,

so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to

Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using fireworks, and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics. Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward. Some other traditions associated with the holiday include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes thoroughly prior to the dawn of the new year, welcoming family for

a big reunion and avoiding activities deemed to be taboo. Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. Children receive money tucked inside of red envelopes to help transfer fortune from elders to younger generations. In addition to red envelopes, homes and decorations are adorned in red. The red color was purported to be instrumental in scaring away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his

or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

Farmingdale High School hosted their third annual VEX Robotics Competition on Sunday, January 5, 2020. Close to eighty teams participated, comprised of high school and middle school students from across southern New York State. The purpose of the competition is to explore innovation through robotics, celebrate student accomplishments, and encourage friendly competition. The tournament was open to the public and admission was free. Nearly a dozen FHS alumni were on hand as volunteer referees and judges. “It was a privilege to have so many of our alumni back home to help run this event,” said high school teacher and team coach Ann Grady. “Nearly all of them are pursuing engineering degrees and they really appreciate how their Farmingdale Robotics training prepared them for their studies and college engineering projects.” Farmingdale High School has three robotics teams, two of which competed in the Tower Takeover game, a

The Farmingdale School District is pleased to announce that after a year of planning, designing, creating new content, and migrating existing material, the new district website has launched! In 2018, when Superintendent Paul Defendini took over the district, he promised transparency and multiple pathways of communication. “Our newly designed website is just one example of how we are making information accessible to all members of the Farmingdale community,” said Superintendent Defendini. “We hope that everyone finds it to be a valuable resource for obtaining information about our school district.” “The new website was a team effort,” said Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational

Development Dr. William Brennan, who oversaw the whole process. “We had to pull multiple years of information from six schools and categorize it in an efficient way. We made sure the new site would be easy to navigate and provide users with a friendly viewing experience.” The rebranded site is story-focused and contains more imagery. Along with an updated and colorful new look, the home page features large photographs that showcase student and faculty highlights. The site is categorized with six major topics: District, Board of Education, Schools, Academics, Resources, and Calendars. The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y!
