ixth grade students in the Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School recently were treated to an interactive Literature and Culinary Arts lesson, led by Francesco Ilardi, The Pizza Poet pizza chef. The students made their own individual pizzas while Ilardi read poems to students in English and Italian. The theme of the poems emphasized the importance of family, friendship and loyalty.

blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake

January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely

February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and flower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.

According to a briefing released on January 9th, 2014 by the Department of Veteran Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide every day; and young male veterans (under the age of 30) are three times more likely to commit suicide than civilian males in the same age range. The statistics have also increased for female veterans in all age brackets as well. “Long Island Crisis Center is paying close attention to these numbers,” stated Executive Director Linda Leonard. “One important fact pointed out in the study is that for those veterans receiving care through the VHA, suicide is down by 30 percent. However, for those veterans not enrolled in a program, suicide has soared by 60 percent. That is truly alarming. We know we can play a pivotal role in helping these veterans receive the help they need.” Officials at the Department of Veteran

Super Bowl Safety For Pets The Super Bowl can be a fun, entertaining event for you and your friends to enjoy. However, certain foods and drinks typically consumed during the “big game” can be dangerous to your pets. Central Veterinary Associates has created these cautionary tips to help you and your dog or cat enjoy the festivities safely. Try keeping your animals away from the below food products and beverages: Alcohol - Plain and simple, alcohol is a toxin and even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, coma, or death in pets. Chips & Dip - Most dips contain onions and garlic, which destroy pets’ red blood cells and can result in anemia. Salty foods, such as potato chips, can cause excessive thirst, urination, and sodium poisoning. Guacamole - Avocado contains persin, a substance that can prove fatal to birds. For dogs and cats, it’s unclear how toxic it is, but it is recommended that avocados or anything made from them not be fed to your pets. The pit also causes concern for dogs, as

it can lead to an intestinal obstruction or can even become lodged in their throats. Ice Cream - Everyone loves ice cream, including - unfortunately - pets. Dairy products can upset their digestive tracts and cause stomach distress and diarrhea. Nuts - Besides being a choking hazard, certain nuts like macadamias can poison your pets. As few as six can cause your pet to experience muscle tremors, weakness, vomiting, fever and an elevated heart rate. Eating chocolate with nuts can exacerbate these symptoms. Chocolate - Chocolate contains dairy (see above) and a chemical called theobromine, which can be fatal to pets. Fat Trimmings - Fat trimmed from meats like barbecued ribs can cause pancreatitis in dogs. Bones - While you might think it is second nature to give a dog a bone (or chicken wing, as the case may be), bones can cause obstructions in pets’ digestive tracts and also lead to choking. They can also break off and puncture the animal’s stomach lining.

Caffeinated Beverages Sugary sodas are a staple at any party, but not for your animals. The caffeine in soda, coffee, tea, and iced tea can be toxic to pets and lead to abnormal heart rhythms, seizure, and death. “Many times, pet owners will be enjoying the game and conversing with their friends, which makes them forget about checking on the status of their pets,” says Dr. John Charos, President/CEO, Central Veterinary Associates. “Guests should be aware of the dangers that certain food and drinks could have on your pets. Ask your guests not to feed or sneak food to them. Frostbitten skin feels cold to the touch. · If frostbite is suspected, move the victim to a warm area and cover the affected area with something warm and dry. Never rub it! · Get to a doctor or hospital as quickly as possible. Please read your owner’s manual and follow these tips when operating a snow blower: · Never leave your snow blower running and unattended. · Make sure to discharge chutes or augers to clear stuck snow and ice. · Never add fuel when the engine is running and hot. · Make sure you know how to turn the machine off quickly. Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Anthony Macagnone (center) presents citations to recipients of the 2014 Rotational Art Exhibit Program Awards. The Rotational Art Exhibit Program is an event that is open to the public that encourages local artists to display their work in one month increments at locations throughout

the Town of Oyster Bay, such as libraries, banks and businesses. This year, awards were presented in the categories of photography and painting. On behalf of the entire Town Board, Councilman Macagnone congratulated the award recipients on their fine work and thanked them for their participation in the program. The award recipients

A DAY IN CLAY - Farmingdale School District Northside Elementary School fourth grade students recently learned how to make Native American themed-pottery in their art and social studies classes. The students’ teachers and a ceramic expert provided students with examples and photographs of Native American art, and then properly are: Terry Kimmel – Third demonstrated how to create a pot. The students then incorporated those techniques Place Painting, Terry to create their own unique, one-of-a-kind pottery. Outreach Group Formed

Several months ago, Walter and Rev. Juanita Hilsenbeck started an outreach group, known as King David Fellowship of St. David’s Lutheran Church, that meets monthly in their Massapequa home. Featured at each meeting is music on a 1928, vintage Wurlitzer pipe organ, good

food and fellowship. Several times, Pastor David Meyers attended with his guitar and voice to add to the enjoyment of the afternoon. The most recent meeting included a visit by Dan Minervini, a graduate of Chaminade High School, and a very talented musician. He played a

mini-concert on the 1928 instrument, which was the highlight of the afternoon. The instrument has resided in Massapequa since 1967, when the Hilsenbeck’s provided it with a second home. The first was the 167th Street Theater, located in the Bronx.

Share The Voice, a local charity raising awareness and funds to provide disabled children with adaptive tricycles, was so blessed this season. The organization raised enough money to give away two specially made adaptive tricycles as Christmas gifts to two beautiful young girls! Joined by Manorville Fire Department, Santa and Share the Voice made an important delivery to Ms. Ava Faicco of Mastic. Family and neighbors were already perched out in the street awaiting what they thought was an annual fire truck Santa sighting. Imagine their surprise when the trucks stopped right in front Ava and Santa climbed down! Fire

fighters lifted the trike off the truck and presented Ava with her Christmas/ Birthday (12/28) present. Two hours later, in Smithtown, Santa made a second delivery, this time to Emma Nelson. The family thought they were preparing for a family holiday photo shoot. NOPE! Mom and Dad were stunned to see the gift come off the fire truck! Friends, neighbors and a bunch of strangers stood outside singing Christmas Carrols as Emma got acquainted with her new wheels. Emma’s trike was in part donated by the White family, currently of Massapequa Park. Members of the White family fulfilled their grandmother’s (Ruth White, age 97) wish of

donating the money they would have spent on her Christmas gift to a child in need. Kimberly White, granddaughter, chose Share the Voice as a worthy recipient. Ruth couldn’t have been happier watching the video of Emma receiving her trike. Many tears and life lessons from grandma were a part of the White family’s holiday this year.
