The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

Applebee’s 5th Annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest Applebee’s to honor two deserving teachers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in Nassau County and one in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*! To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must

submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use. Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places,

community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster

Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name,

Precautions That Can Keep Wedding Guests Safe During The Pandemic

he outbreak of the novel coronavirus that began in the winter of 2019-20 and was ultimately declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization put many couples’wedding plans in peril. In an effort to stop the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable to it, governments across the globe placed restrictions on social gatherings, including weddings. Those restrictions prompted some couples to postpone their nuptials until 2021, while others tied the knot at considerably smaller ceremonies than they initially planned for. Couples planning to tie the knot in the months ahead can still do so, but the WHO recommends they take certain precautions as they organize their ceremonies and receptions. • Confirm local regulations. Restrictions related to COVID-19 differ greatly by region.

Areas that were not hit hard by the virus may not have as many restrictions in place as those that were devastated by the outbreak. In addition, cities or regions whose responses to the virus have been successful may have relaxed restrictions more than areas that are still struggling. The WHO notes the importance of checking local guidelines prior to planning an event, and that’s especially important for couples who hope to get married in towns or cities where they do not currently reside. • Keep guests up to date about precautions. Include detailed information about the safety measures that will be implemented during the wedding on your wedding website. Insert a card detailing this information into your invitation envelopes as well so all guests know what to expect when they accept the invitation. In addition, remind guests of the safety

precautions throughout the ceremony. • Provide sanitary supplies. Make sure hand sanitizer, soap, water, and masks are readily available for all guests. Various events have been modified due to the pandemic, and weddings and bachelor/ bachelorette parties have proven no exception. Couples may need to make certain changes to traditional gatherings like bachelor and bachelorette parties to stay safe. Wedding parties average four to five close friends or family members on each side, according to Martha Stewart weddings. Gatherings of five will likely comply with the limitations set for gatherings for indoor and outdoor venues. However, it’s essential to check local regulations before planning festivities. Even if gathering with your wedding party is doable, you may have to think outside the box when it comes to how to enjoy these last hoorahs before the wedding.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently hosted the County’s annual Winter Clothing Distribution, which included a major donation by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office of jackets seized during the course of a crackdown on illegal counterfeit activities. The event, modified due to COVID-19, distributed 200 boxes of winter clothing directly to approximately 50 churches and communitybased organizations. Boxes contained assorted sizes of men’s, women’s, and children’s hats, gloves, socks, and jackets. The County Executive thanks the Office of District Attorney Madeline Singas, Department of Human Services, Office of Minority Affairs, Office of Hispanic Affairs, Office of Asian American Affairs, Office of Housing, Office of Emergency Management, and Department of Public Works for making this event possible. Great South Bay YMCA Helps Local Families Every holiday season, the Great South Bay YMCA orchestrates their Adopt-AFamily initiative to provide support to local families in need. But in early December 2020 as COVID-19 cases surged and unemployment rates reached recordbreaking highs, countless local families grew more concerned with their daily living expenses rather than fulfilling their traditional rituals of holiday dinner and gift exchanges. The “spirit of giving” became a touchstone in the early months of the pandemic and the Great South Bay YMCA tapped into their nearly thirty years of fundraising for the Y’s cause-driven mission, the dedication of their leadership team, and the generosity of its community to plan their efforts in new and different ways knowing this year would be like no other. To commence the AdoptA-Family initiative, the Great South Bay YMCA identified local families in need, in collaboration with the school districts they serve for Before & After School programs, volunteer leaders, Y staff and members, and corporate and foundation partners to raise funds for the holiday giving season. A portion of the financial donations made to the YMCA Annual Campaign allowed the Y to do holiday shopping to provide gifts and food on the “wish list” to

children and parents alike, wrap the gifts, and deliver to the families. Some generous donors also opted to do their own shopping and deliver wrapped gifts or gift cards to the Y for distribution. “The Y is able to work directly with low-income families in our community to identify the families’ specific needs and wants. We gather information on the children; their interests, clothing sizes, and wishes for holiday gifts. We learn what the parents or guardians’ needs are such as helping with their rent or putting food on the table for dinner”, says Bob Pettersen, Executive Director at the Great South Bay YMCA. He adds, “We try and give the kids something special for Christmas morning and give support to parents who under such stress during the holidays. They want to give their children the best but are so overwhelmed with bills and other various challenges. In 2020, the need to help our neighbors was simply greater than ever.” More than $42,000 was raised in December alone through the Great South Bay YMCA’s Annual Campaign to adopt twenty local families for this holiday season, and provide families with access to Y programs and services through scholarships. Twenty-five children received special gifts under

the tree and their parents received much needed relief. With coronavirus upending life, the Great South Bay Y focused on providing relief for children of essential workers, families with children who were remote learning, and families experiencing tremendous financial hardships. In addition to the gift cards, wrapped donated toys, and food relief, the Y donated Chromebooks to families who did not have the resources needed for their children in a virtual learning environment due to the pandemic. A recipient of the AdoptA-Family initiative said, “I just needed a break. Life has been so hard this year with COVID. I can’t keep up. These generous gifts brought me relief, and more importantly, joy to my children, because they really needed it this year. I can’t thank the Y enough for all the work being done to help us.” Like individuals, businesses and non-profits across Long Island have been greatly impacted by the crisis, yet the Y’s mission of nurturing youth development, fostering healthy living, and inspiring social responsibility have pulled at the heartstrings of the Great South Bay YMCA’s committed volunteer leaders, partners and donors more than ever. “With funds raised through the Annual A DELIGHTED LOCAL RECIPIENT - A delighted local Campaign, the Y can provide recipient of Christmas gifts for the 2020 holiday season diverse, life-enriching from Great South Bay YMCA’s Adopt-A-Family initiative. programs to all, regardless

Donors continue to trust the Y to be good stewards of their gifts and many people in the community become donors to the Y as a result of being a past recipient or in appreciation of the Y’s impact.” With fundraising being a critical lifeline needed to help the YMCA stay afloat, donors and partners of the Y worked even harder this year to keep the momentum going for months when donor fatigue would historically be setting in. Local businesses, like the Bondy family-owned Sir Speedy in Bay Shore, donated resources to help the Great South Bay YMCA reach further into the community through their networks to ensure the Y could remain a beacon of hope even during a life-altering pandemic. The Great South Bay YMCA 2020 Annual Campaign and the Adopt-A-Family initiative were made possible by partners such as the Bondy Family and Sir Speedy Bay Shore, LIAM Foundation, Ganzi Family Foundation, Sacco Foundation, Bay Shore Lions Club, Newins Ford, The Kussmail Foundation, Harbour Club and many others that contributed to these efforts.
